Hughie Jennings, manager of the Detroit Tigers, needs good pitchers badly. He is said to have made offers for Walter Johnson of the Nationals and Frank Smith of the Chicago White Sox. If these reports are true Hughie certainly isn’t modest In his wishes. Comiskey might trade Smith for Ty Cobb and Tom Noyes might let Johnson go for a barrel or two of coin. ’Tis said Detroit offered Washington $30,000 for the bat. tery, Johnson and Street. President Navtn says it isn’t true. Maybe that settles it and maybe it doesn’t. Catcher Beckendorf of Detroit has been sold to Washington.
