Cbtfau&O Saestum/ When shown positive and reliable proof that a certain remedy had cured numerous cases of female ills, wouldn’t any sensible woman conclude that the same remedy would also benefit her if suffering with the same trouble ? New Use for Blotting Paper.
In Germany blotting paper is used to clean machinery. Tow, woolen re* fuse, sponge cloths and jute waste ara the materials usually employed for tha cleaning of machines and parts of engines which are soiled by dust and lubricating substances. The better varieties of cotton waste are very good for scouring purposes, but the cheaper grades are charged with dust, and in using them a sponge cloth, specially manufactured for the purpose, is employed. In using blotting paper for scouring purposes the use of cotton waste is decreased and the sponge cloths are entirely dispensed with. On the average the German workman received under the former system 250 grams of cotton waste, one new sponge Cloth and one es two renovated ones every week. Now he is supplied with 150 grams of cotton waste, and about eight or ten sheets of blotting paper, at a cost of 2% cents, or one-third the cost of the cotton waste. The paper is not only cheaper, says Harper’s Weekly, but it does not soil the machinery, with fibers and dust, as do the woolen refuse and the sponge cloths. It is also less combustible than other cleaning materials, and if it should be caught in the machinery while engines in motion are being cleaned it tears easily, and the workmen run no risk of having their hands drawn into the machinery.

Tribute to Colored Man.
The Richmond papers lately gave an account of a tribute paid by the Westmoreland club of that city to an old negro servant, the Outlook says. Nathan Moore for over thirty-one years was in the employ of this club, and for a number of years was its head doorkeeper. On his left arm he wore six gold service stripes, one for each five years of continuous service, and on each Christmas he received -$5 for each stripe as a mark of esteem from the members. Though for a number of months past unable because of ill health to attend to his duties, he had been retained on the club’s pay roll, and his post kept open for him in the event of his recovery. At the funeral the members of the club, which we believe is the oldest and most aristocratic club in the city, assembled at the clubhouse and marched in a body to the Second Baptist Church (colored) to attend the service—“an honor,” says a Richmond paper, “that has never been paid even to a member of the club.” The incident is Worth recording for the benefit- of northern readers, who are apt to imagine that the onlv attentions paid to negroes in the South are those rendered by lynching parties.

THE FIRST ROLLER SKATES.
Mishap That Befell Man on Wheels in Soho, London, in 1700. It is said that the first roller skates were introduced Into England so long ago as the year 1760. The inventor was a Fleming, who was attached to the suite of the Spanish ambassador, and came with him that year to London. We are told that “mounted on a pair of his contrivances and playing a violin, he mixed in the motley throng at the celebrated Mrs. Cornell's masquerade at Carlisle House, Soho square, when, not having provided the means of retarding h}s velocity, nor of commanding its direction, he impelled himself against a very valuable mirror, dashed it to atoms, broke his instrument to pieces and wounded himself severely.” This grievous mishap to the hilarious inventor probably put back roller skating a century or so. We have improved on the “contrivances” since then, but even now no one has been able to retard velocity by means of pneumatic brakes. We leave this hint to pres-ent-day inventors for their consideration. *

Gen. Jackson had won the battle of New Orleans. “Just as likely as not,” he reflected, "it will turn out that I’ve committed a monumental blunder. I ought to have let Pakenham have his way, and take the whole Mississippi River. It would have been cheaper. Now, this country will have to improve the blamed old stream itself!” Years afterward, however, he changed his mind and decided that it was best for .the victors to do the spoiling.
