Dr. C. W. Watts, of Fayetto,-. Mo., who recently wrote after seeing an article in the National Tribune about the monument, sent $1 toward the monumenCTund. C. A. Balcom, the Remington grocer, is now in the mountains of California not far from San Francisco, for the benefit of his health. His wife, who was operated on for a cancer some months ago and who was for a time in a very critical condition, is now quite a little improved in health and able to he taken to the store every day. W. L. Wood, of Parr, under date of June 10th, sent $5 for the Milroy Soldiers’ monument to be credited as follows: $1 from Isabelle Price widow of William Price, who went out from Jasper county and served three years and six months in Co. K, of the 48th regiment, $2 from Mrs. Wood, $1 from W. L. Wood and $1 from Ocie O. Wood. Mrs. Anna Mitchell, of Medaryville, sent $1 to have the name of her^husband, Harrison Mitchell, of the 48th Indiana regiment, placed on the monument. James E. Brenner, a midshipman at Annapolis Naval Acadamy, completed his first year’s work with honor and has started on the summer cruise to Hampton Roads, Va„ thence to England, France and Portugal. He is on the U. S. S. lowa, and during his absence letters addressed to Midshipman James E. Brenner; It. S. S. lowa, care of the postmaster, New York, N. Y„ will be forwarded to him. It is a fine cruise and will include an inland trip to France. The middle fleet will return to Annapolis on Aug 29th arid Jim will come to Rensselaer on a furlough. It is very gratifying to Jim's many friends here to know how well he is progressing. All the attorneys interested in the suit of Newton county against Chas W. —Spinney, to recover an alleged shortage, appeared in court Friday The county, believing.it would be impossible to secure an impartial jury here, asked for a change of venue to the Jasper circuit court. The attorneys for Spinney then agreed to try the case before Judge Hanley, and tin motion for a change of venue was withdrawn. An attempt was made tc agree on a date for the hearing of the case during the summer vacation, but being unable to fix a date agreeable tc the court and to the various attorneys interested, the matter was continued to the October term.—Kentland Enterprise.
A friend lias handed us a copy of the Fenton, Mich., Courier, containing the following notice of Rev. A. G. Work, former pastor of the Presbyterian church here; “At a special meeting at the Presbyterian church last Sunday, immediately following the morning services, by request Rev. A. G. Work was granted a two months’ leave of absence, which together with iris regular four weeks' summer vacation leaves him a three months' absence from Fenton. Mr. Work leaves next week for Winona Academy, with which institution he is connected as member of the board of trustees and will spend a large part of the summer acting as field secretary looking hfter prospective students. Mr. Work will make his headquarters at Winona Lake until the latter part of July, when he will enjoy a pleasure trip to Yellowstone Park two yeeks and ending his vacation with a two weeks’ outing in the mountains of Colorado. Rev. Work’s host of friends regret his leaving for the summer and all will extend him a hearty welcome to the old town on his return. During his absence, Rev. The entire stock of new 1910 clotliing which I have just purchased, will be slaughtered in our June clean-up sale. Model Clothing Co., Simon Leopold, Mgr. J. W.’ Shedd, who is spending the winter in Los Angeles, Cal., sends $2 for the monument fund. He writes that he can not tell how long he will remain out there. The dredge for the Rompke Sipkema ditch arrived in Keener township from Marshall county today and is being unloaded ready for action. H. W. Marble has the contract for the ditch. Ed Sutherland, Homer Dresbach Tip Kenyon and Mell Julian and family, all of Remington, attended the horse sale at--Lafayette Friday. Mr-s Sutherland bought some driving horses.
Guy Barnard and family, of Lochiel came over in their auto today, going on to Wheatffeld, where he owns a farm. He had a tire blowout some distance out of town and had to come in on a flat wheel. Ed Sutherland brought O. G. Max--well over from Remington today, so that “Orv” could make a bid on the construction of the Chas. May tile ditch. Mr. Sunderland brought his wife and two sons, Wilbur 1 and Earl, along with him, for the ride. Earle Reynolds and Nellie Donegan. the champion rolled skaters of the world, will sail for London, England June 15th, for their European engagement. Their engagements for one year are as follows: July and August Palace Theatre, London; September, Folios Bergere Theatre, Paris; October and November, Winter Garten Berlin; December, Ronaclier’s Theatre Vienna, Austria; January, Hansa Hamburg, Germany; February, Central Theatre, Hannover, and Central Theatre, Madgesburger; March, Orfetim Theatre, Budapest, Hungary; April Theatre Varieties, Breslau, Germany; May and June, Palace Theatre, London.
