A Clever Stroke.
Turning defeat into victory is the achievement of genius. This example, gleaned from the London Dally Mall, the adroitness with which it is sometimes done. An eminent lawyer was once crossexamining a very clever woman, mother of the plaintiff in a breach-of-prom-ise action, and was completely worsted in the encounter of wits. At the close, however, he turned to the jury and exclaimed: "You saw, gentlemen, that even 1 was but a child in-her hands! What must my client have been?”
