Hen’s Egg Weighed More Than a Fourth of a Pound.
W. R. Nowels, who raises strictly thoroughbred Light Brahma chickens, brought the champion big egg of the season to the Republican office Friday. And it is probable that its right to championship claims will extend farther than that this season, for it was the largest hen’s egg we have ever seen and Mr. Nowels does not recall in his experience an egg of such gigantic proportions. Of course, it it not a normal egg, as its great size and a rough or seamlike appearance of the shell in the center indicated. It was what is commonly called a double yolked egg. It measured 8% inches in circumference the long way and 6% inches around the other way, while it weighed 4% ounces. It would make a man a good breakfast. If chickens laid that sized eggs as a rule they would soon break up the high cost of meat, and possibly Mr. Nowels’ high class brahmas are endeavoring to’do this.
