Disenchanted, by Pierre Loti. His Own People, by Booth Tarkington. An expanded short story in which a young American realizes his dream of going to Europe and seeing the great world, falls in love with a group of adventurers who strip him /of his scanty funds, and returns to his commonplace-Ohio village, a wiser but sadder man. Slight but artistic and absorbing. For Jacinta, by Harold Bindloss. A story of love and adventure on the high seas, the west-African coast, and in the Canary Islands. Well told anc wholesome. ' The Gentleman, by Alfred Ollivant. Follows the fortunes of a flfteen-year-old midshipman during three eventful days, in which he<plays the star part in frustrating Napoleon’s attemp. to kidnap Nelson before Trafalgar. The Gentleman” is Napoleon’s agent, an Irish rebel of winning character whose death brings grief to the midshipman’s heart. An ingenious, breathless story, of decided literary merit, that men and older boys will enjoy. Round the Fire Stories, by A. C. Doyle. Seventeen detective and mystery stories, varying in interest and merit, but all having a touch of the horrible and gruesome. The Point of Honor, by Joseph Conrad. A stirring story of a feud between two young officers in Napoleon’s army, causing frequent duels and lasting till the downfall of the empire, but ending happily with the wedding of one of the men.

On a wager of |lO that he could not eat two dozen scrambled eggs in ten minutes, Alex Borer, night watchman at Petersburg, Ind., established a new record as an egg eater, and won the money in 9% minutes. The feat was accomplished at a restaurant, and when Borer finished he asked if there were any more eggs, that the last tasted as good as the first. Richard Bullock, the original “Deadwood Dick,” is seriously ill at Venice, Cal., at the home of Mayor Eskins, who was /his submessenger twenty years ago z on the bullion run between Lead, S.
