“You shouldn’t call us Japs in your newspapers,” said a Japanese journalist. “We don’t think it’s polite. You wouldn’t want us to call you Yanks in our papers, would you? A western Congressman said to me the other day: ‘What nese are you—Japanese or Chinese?’ I’d have liked to jiu-jitsu him, but I only smiled and retorted: ‘What key are you—monkey or Yankee?’ ”
