Agitation for the creation of a proposed new state, to be called Siskiyou, out of northern California and southern Oregon, has reached such a stage that a convention has been called to meet at Eureka, Cal., on March 15. Jesse Bijfch, editor of the Oxford (Ind.) Tribune, was introduced to President Taft by Representative Crumpacker Tuesday. The president greeted the Indiana editor warmly, and talked for several minutes about conditions in the Hoosier state. Lake county in 1909 had 200 coroner’s cases, by a strange coincidence just as many as were recorded in the year 1908. Hammond and Gary together had more than half of the cases for the year 1909, Gary leading with 52, or two more than Hammond had. Indiana Harbor, East Chicago and Whiting follow in succession respectively. John W. Daniel, of Lynchburg, Wednesday was formerly re-elected by the general assembly of Virginia to the United States senate. It is liis fifth term in that position. The vote of the republican minority was given to Congressman Slemp.
After she had been pronounced dead Mrs. Ora C. Gunion of Marion breathed again, the undertaker was sent away, and when the physician hurried back he said she might recover. She underwent a surgical operation a week ago. Miss Virginia Brazier, of Anderson, left Wednesday for India, where she w iH do missionary w r ork. Her mission is unique in that she goes as the representative of no religious organization, but will be supported by donations from Anderson people. James McWeeny, former chief of police in South Bend, has taken a position with the grand aerie of Eagles. Mr. McWeeny will organize new aeries, will visit old aeries and infuse new life into them, and do other things under the direction of the grand president, Prank E. Hering. A large barn of Andrew Pearson, south of Wabash, was destroyed by fire of unknown origin early ‘Tuesday. Eighty-seven head of live stock, including 5 horses, 16 cattle and 6» sheep, weie burned, together —with a large quantity of hay, grain and other property. The Loss is SIO,OOO.
