IMPORTANT FROM INDIANA, The National Intelligencer says: From this growing and rapidiy. peopling Slate we have informatiou,of the greatest in terest not only to her but to the whole Union, of her having passed'an act to redeem her character from the stain of repudiation. The kst mail from the West brings ua the news that an act ' his passed both branches of the Legislature of Indiana, and has be
come a law, which, uniting a composition ol interests, past and future; places her upon comparatively high ground, and favorably disappoints the prediction,, heretofore rather confidently made, that she would never pay a dollar of interest or principal ot the bonds issued by her in the prosecution of her great Internal Improvements. This act is of so much importance in many points of view, that, when we can lay our hands upon an authentic copy or epitome of it, we shall place it fully befure our readets. In the meantime we will state the muia features of the act, as we have them from good authority. It mortgages to certain Trustees, to pay the interest upon one half of the State debt, until the said debt shall be extinguished, the Wabash and Erie Canal; the bondholders to finish the caual to the Ohio river within five years, taking for that purpose all the lands appropriated by Congress to aid in the construction of that work. The iuterest on the other half of the debt is to paid by taxation, until the debt itself shall be extinguished. The total amount of the debt1 the payment of interest upou which, and eventual payment of principal, is thus provided for, is about $10,000,000. A PROCLAMATION. By the President of the Republic of Texas Whereas, the Congress of the United States have passed a joint resolution for the admission ot" the State of Texas into the Union, approved December 29ih, 1S45, official information of which has bexjn transmitted by the President of the United Stales to this government; and whereas, by the thirteenth article of the Constitution of the State of Texas, it is made the duty of the President upon the receipt of said information, to convene at an eaily day in the Legislature of the State, at the seat of Government established by said constitution: thorefore be it knowu that I, Anson Jones, President ol the republic of Texas, by virtue of the power vested in me by the State Constitution, do by these presents direct and require that the Senators and Representatives elect to the Legislature shall assemble a regular biennial session at the city of Austin, on Monday, the 16ih day of February next ensu ing, then and there to organize a State Government, and to consult and determine upon such other measures as in their wisdom as may be deemed meet for the general welfare. In testimony whereof, I have caused the "rent seal of the republic to be hereunto siliix'd. -Done at the city of Austin, this 12th day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eijjhl hundred and for ty SX, and of the in dependence of I lie Republic the tenth. ANSON JONES. By the President: Eben. Allen, Sec'y of State. CjirThe editor of the Indian i Pa'riot is informed tint so fir from Tippecanoe County having opposed the extension of" the Cun;ti below Lalayetie, 33 charged, a reference to the Legislative Journals will show, that her representatives in both branches of General Assembly have iuvariably, for several years pist, until the late session, supported every measure calculated to benefit such extension. It is but sheer jusiice to the people of Tippecanoe, that this (act should be known, now that she is so lavishly abused lor the course of her Senator and Representatives in voting against the Butler Bill. . What they lid in this matter, was upon their own responsibility ; and whether right or wrong their opposition to the bill, we venture to say, did not arise from any hostility to the Canal, but fronva conviction that the bill va3 objectionable in other respects. We think they weTe in error; but are satisfied that their friendship for the canal is no less sincere than those who make so much ado about it. We say, "let justice be done, though the heavens should fall.'" Tippecanoe Jour. AN APPEAL. - The Red River Republican, alter making its best Christmas bow puts up the following appeal. , If mortal man, who "owes the printer," can withstand it we have studied human nature to no purpose. Come, ye patrons, proud and lowly, Rich and ragged every mau, Come and fork o'er what you owe the Red River Republican. - - We are right anxious to receive it; Ah! we sadly need the chink; Every dollar bright, believe it. To pay for paper, tent and ink. " - Pray, don't hesitate, ye signers, Of the printer's pittance think . Send, O send the silver shiners! ' Quickly cash rs,or we sink. A letter from Washington, dated lOth inst, to the New Yore Herald, 6ays: "An extraordinary courier arrived here last night Irom Corpus Christi, with despatches for our government for the army of observation there. It is supposed by those conversant with our relations with Mexico, that the government of that country are about to make a hostile demonstration against us, if they have not already done so. It was in view of this state of things being likely to occur, that the Secretary of the Navy, a fortnight since, issued orders to the sev. eral navy yards to get all our vessels in readiness forthwith, to concentrate them in the Gulf of Mexico. This 1 informed you of at the time. "There wus rather an unusual bustle to-day in the War Department, consequent upon the reception of thtse despatches, and Gen. Scott, who it seems had not been consulted previously upon any of the movements of our army in Texas, was sect for in hast-W-day by the Secretary of War. He was with him in consultation at his oflice until a laio hour this evening."
(fj- We may take the following as a specimen of the speeches made in Gongress for bun" comb! " ' Mr. Chairman. As an'American citizen, to whom liberty is dear, 1 claim to be heard on the important proposition now before the house. A large tract ot country,, watered by the vast Pacific with a clime rendered genial by its mild influence, is about to be snatched from us by one of the most avaricious nations on God's earth, and whose possessions are uncircumscribed by distance. The productions ot every clime are tributary to her gigantic power. In the revolution, she thought to rivet herchams upon
our ancestors, in the last war she endeavored to give laws to our infant navy, but we taught her to respect "Sailors rights." She now seeks to restrict our onward march in the proud career ol freedom, I. sir for one will never conconsent to the claims of her all grasping her lawless might. And, in the name of our patriot sires, I invoke the spirit of seventy six ; now slumbering in the bosom of their sons. Let us rally the strength of the nation and give the notice, Let us rather invite than shun a declaration of war in a just cause. It will call forth the reasources, the genius of the country, and open a field tor the display of that indomitable courage which is the characteristic of Ameiica.ijlrc emeu . The spoils ol conquest will prove a source ol' emolument tJ thousands, ruined by the speculation consequent on a full tide of prosperity, , . - Pass the bill before the house; make - an adequate approprioiion for the contest and jou will see the sons of chivalry flocking to the ten thousand banners waving in the breeze. Our fleet?, manned by Columbia's gallant, tars, will liud their way into every sea: the ocean will resound wiili the vollied thuKder of victory and the merchantmen of England will crowd our ports: the trophies of war. Quebec will fall before our arms; the stars and stripes will float o'er iwoiiureai. Aiia witu tne assistance ol Hie oanadian patriots now panting lor liberty, we shall soon add these proviuces to our liuineuse do main. A line ot (unifications in Oregon, with a tew Dailies, resulting like that ot Niagra, Dridgewater and New Orleans, will give us peaceable posesiou of this long conustetJ territory. And as Mexico will probably join England, we will march our triumphant torues to us capital, which being defended by troops, proverbially deficient in courage, they will quail at our eagle banner and lout; line ol ariiltry, planted in leattul array belore her crumbling (unless, and yield without a contest. The commanders of every fort and battery in this rich, meialic region, alarmed it the rapidity ot our conquesis, will send in their submission. States ot minor importance will request to be annexed to the great American Union. We will erect. an impegnable fortress at the Istmuth ol Darien, and lay the foundation of a Capitol city on the shore of the Lake of the Woods; in anticipation at the conquest of the Russian Possessions. When, bidding defiance to transatlantic interference with affairs) in the Western hemisphere, we may gradually diffuse the principles ol liberty among the inhabitants ot South America. Looking at the day when our dominion shall extend trom Cape Horn to the Artie ocean t watered on one side by the North Atlantic and on the other by the North Pacific. Tuen, should we even fall by the con Hiding interests arising front xteut of territory our last days will be like those ot my venerable mend Mr. Adams "a blaze of globi." CONSUMPTION CURED.
