MESMERISM. We have received a letter from Mr. E. M. Spencer, from Vincennes, at tvhicb place he is at present lecturing, notifying US of hia intention to visit this city and deliver a course of lectures on Mesmerism. He is said to be an interesting and popular lecturer upon this most wonderful science, and his perform
ances in the east and elsewhere, are spoken off in the papers of the places where he has been, interesting in the highest degree, and utteily astounding. 07-The Whigs of this county held a meet "ing at the Court House, on the 31st ultimo, for ihe purpose of appointing Delegates to attend the State Convention to be held at Indianapolis on the 9th inst.,to-morrow. Pre vious, however, to transacting that business, the following expression of opinion in relation to our Slate Debt, and the completion of our Canal, was. decided as proper; and the unanimous vote which was given in fa vor of the resolution, is the best evidence that could be given of the firm determation of the Whigs of Vanderbugh to use all hon est means to accomplish these objects. Daniel Woolsey, Esq., was called to the Chair, and Wm. Newton appointed Secretafy- ... . After the object of the meeting was ex plained, on motion of Jas. G.Jones, Esq., t committee of five was appointed to draft res olutions expressive of the sense of the meet ing; which committee consisted of Messrs. J. G. Jones, J. J. Chandler, Jas. E. Blylhe, Willard Carpenter and John Ingle. After a short absence," the Committee returned and through its chairman, Mr. Jones reported the following Preamble and Resolutions: Whereas the individual embarrassment of our citizens are now almost entirely removed; and wheteas, we are now able to pay part, if not all, the interest as it accrues on our State Debt, and our representatives cannot longer delay to make some provision for part at least, of the interest due, and accruing on our foreign debt, without subjecting a majority of the peo pie of the Slate to be charged with repudiation and dishonesty; therefore, Resolved, That our Representatives in the Legislature, the Hon. Joseph Lane and Conrad Baker, be requested jo use all honorable mean3 to procure the adoption of some measure for the payment of the interest on the Foreign Debt of the State. And whereas, we deeem the completion of the Canal from Terre-Haute to Evansville, an object desirable to every portion of the citizens of the State, as the means ot enabling the State to discharge all tust demand a gainst her, without seriously increasing the burthen of the people thereof. Resolved, That our representatives, the Hon. Joseph Lane and Conrad B iker be requested to exert themselves to obtain the passage of a law for that purpose, during the present session. Resolved, That our Senators and Representatives onglit, in our opinion to oppose the adjournment of thejLegislature, until pro.vision is made for part of the interest of our Foreign Debt, and the completion of Wabash and Erie Canal to Evansville. Resetted, That the proposition made by Mr. C. Butler to the Joint Committee of me two house of the legisUture,on the 23th ult ., appear reasonable and just, and such as ought to be accepted. There resolutions were then read separately, aud adopted by the unanimous vote of the Meeting. After which, John Ingle, Esq.,o5ered the following resolutions, which, alter ,a euort rdiscussion, were aiso unani mously adopted: Resolved, That it is our opinion that if our country had repudiating debtors among the nations ot the Earth, she would take tneasutes to make them pay. Resolved, That a failure to pay, when the ability exists, is repudiation. Resolved, That if the State of Indiana is able to pay one per cent, on hr bonds, and no more, aud fails to pay that one per cent., that is repudiation. Resolved, That the State of Indiana, with I lier 124,000 taxable polls, and her $120,000,000 of taxable property, could and would, if necessary a short notice, raised and appropriate a sum equal to her whole foreign'debt, to repel a foreign invasion or ' wipe a stain from her country's flag; and that what she is able to do in the national defence, she is able to do in 'removing the deep dishonor of practical repudiation, which is fast overwhelmuing her name and character. Jas G.Jones, Esq.Tthen offered a resolution, which he supported by a few pointed and excellent remarks, after which the resolution was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That we deem it expedient and proper that each tax payer should be required to make an affidavit of the value of his taxable property, so that the capitalist whose funds are not visable, may be reached as well as the farmer and others whose property is visible. - It wis then on motion, Resolved, That a copy of the proceedings of this meeting be forwarded to the Hon. Joseph Lane and Conrad Baker, and that the same -be published in the Evansville and Indianapolis papers. After which the meeting adjourned. . D. WOOLSEY, Ch'm. War. Newton, Sec. THE HISTORY OF LIFE. Day dawned. Within a curtained room, Filled to faintnass with perfume, A lady lay at point of doom. Day closed. A child had seen the light. But for the lady fair and bright, She rested in unconscious night! Spring came. The lady's grave was green,' And near it oftentimes was seen, A gentle boy with thoughtful mein. Yeats fled. He wore a manly face. And struggled in the world's rough race, And won at last a lofty plce. And then he died! Behold before ye, Humanity's brief sum and story. 24th December, Mrs ANN P. NEWMAN, aged 61. consort of James Newman. Esq. She was a native of Caroline county, Virginia, and had beenaresident ofthistown for twenty-five years, where she had won the respect of all who were acquainted with her worth. She wa3 a member of the Methodist Epicopal Church, and evinced by her life the sincerity of her Faith. The morn was dark and cold, The way was drear and wild. But on she pressed at duty's call To aid her suffering child. Returning health to him No joy can now impart, The shaft averted, by her hand. Hath pierced her faithful heart. Far from her happy home Death's angel hovering now; No daughter's soothing hand to wipe The death-dew from her brow. The ice-cold form returns To that loved home once more; But sad and long the parting now For love and life are o'e;. Yt, slay the falling tear Bright is her place of rest Resigned and calm she passed away To live among th-e blest! PItOSPECTlTS FOB THE GENERAL BAPTIST HERALD. SN presenting a new prospectus, we would first lender to our tnends and patrons in general, our most hearty thanks for the kind and liberal manner in which they have sustained us thus far. Never has an enterprise succeeded better, under such unfavorable circumstances! When we reflect, that a few ministers of a feeble denominations some ten months ago, appoinded two of their number to edit and publish a monthly paper, and that we commenced the paper without any regular traveling agent, and before nine months, upwards of three hundred subscribers responded to our call, we are astonished at the result! But notwithstanding, that the manner and matter of the "Herald" is highly approved, it it does not yet fully meet -the wants of the people. -'Once a month is not often enough to hear the news," says one. "A monthly paper is no paper at all," rejoins another; "give us a weekly paper," is the cry from nearly every quarter, Well, give us five hundred paying subscribers, and a weekly paper you shall have. The Genera! Baptist (weekly) Herald, is intended lor a family news paper. It will be devoted to the general interest of Christianity, dissemination ot the doctrine of the gospel, as Understood by the General Baptist denomination, and to the spread of benevolent institutions. A portion of its columns will also be devoted to Agriculture and Commerce, together with the General news, both foreign, and domestic. In short we hope to make it worthy -to lie up on the book-shelf of the farmer, the desk of the merchant, and the centre table of tiie rich. THE GENRAL BAPTIST HERALD will be edited by William Reavis, and published in Evansville, Ind., at the low price ot $2 in ad vance, 2 25 if payment be delayed three months, and $2 50 if payment be delayed a longer time. Payment within a month will be considered in advance, and as it can easily be done, and will be better for all parties concerned, we earnetly solicit payment invariably in advance. We now offer this prospectus t the public generally, hoping they will sustain us, promis ing that the paper shall be forth comingso soon as a sumciciit number ot subscribers are ootain ed.
