Origin of Distinguished Persons. Under ihia title, says the Journal du Havre, the Morning Post publishes an historical account of the social condition of the notabilities vi all times, with this epigraph, "truth is stranger than fiction.,, Moses was a shepherd; Noah, a farmer; Confucius, a carpenter; Mohamet the Prophet, a dotikey "driver; Aleliemet AH a barber; the actual Emperor of Morocco, a second-hand dealer; Bernadoite, tin: late King of Sweeden, was a surgeon iu the gairison of Martineau, at the time of the invasion of the BritislijMis. Betnadotte, a washerwoman in Paris; Nupoleou, who came from an obscure Corsican family, was only a Major in the French army, when he married Josephine, the daughter of a tobacco dealer, and a. Creole of Mirtinico; Franklin was a

printer; President Boyer, a mulatto limber; President Tyler, a Ciptuin of Militia; Oliver Cromwell, a brewer; President Folk, an innkeeper; the father-in-law to Isabella, the Queen of Spain, husband to Christiana, and fiiher-ia-law to the King of Naples, was formerly a coffee-house waiter; General Esptrtero, was a sexton; King Christopiie ol Il-tyti a stive in the island of 51. Kilts; the actual President of Jlayti, was equally a slave; BjIivar, a druggist; General Paez, a herdsman; Vasco de Gami, a common sailor; Christophe Colomb, a sailor also ; Louis Philippe, a schoolmaster in Switzerland, Boston and Havana; Catheriue, the Empress of Russia, was a sutler in a regiment; the actual Governor of the island of Madeira, was a tailor; and the actutual Minister of Fiuances in Portugal, was only a wine merchant in Maderia. At this time, Spain and Portugal, recken a good number of Dukes, Marqueses, Counts, Viscounts, and Barons, formeily cooks, tailors, LarberSjCobblers, street-sweepers, and mulattoes. This goes to show that individuals who left the lowest ranks of society, have arrived to the highest degrees of honor, power and fortune, and have monopolized thrones, crowns and altars. Was Brutus, be lore lie became Brutus, anything else but a Brute; A SNAKE STORY. A friend has sent us the particulars of a snake story, which has in it considerable of the marvellous. As a flaiboat man and his son were recently descending the Tallahatchie iu their flat, they discovered, near Locopulis landing a large rattlesnake essaying to cross the river. Tiiay got the "varmint" alive, and contrived to put him into a temporary cage, with apertures iu it, though which father and son could look ou and admire the windings and ringligs of his snake ship. Shortly after having confined the snake, they cought a ground mole, an animal about the size of a .mouse, which has habitation and travels under ground. To test the veracity of the snake and to experiment upon Lissociabiliaty at the same time, they t burst the mole into his quarters. As Mons. Adrian, the conjurer, used to say when he would make the gold watch disappear from , the sight of his audience,it might be said of the mole 'By gar, he wa3 here ho was not here he was not any place V The fact was ne no sooner came wittim tne innuence of the jaws of the rattlesnake, than, rattli ng his tail with delight, he gulphed him down whole! The Hoosier fatiier said it was a "shabby trick to swallow the mole, without even a cheiu1 on him! he'd be cussed, if he'd treat his tobacco that mean!" The son laconically remaked ''Sarved him right." But while they were disputing about the justice of the set, the mole was not idle lie was littely boreing of scratching his Way through the snakes belly, which iu good time he accomplished, and bolted out, as if unconscious of having pet formed a feat ol some consequence. But again the snake took him in, and again he made his way out as betoro! A third time t'te strike swallowed him, and a third time did he eifect his liberation, at least from the ch.se quarters which he must have had in the sn ike's inner apartments. The swike, from the operations performed on his sides, became exhausted; and as refinement tias modernized the verb '"to die," he actually ''deceased.11 The Hoosieis, both father and son, swore, or at least affirmed, that the mole was a crii lerof the best grit they h id ever seen, and would, when they got borne, run him at the ."bar." If nothing else, there is a moral to this story; for it proves the truth of the old saw. that the "battle ts not always to the sirou.' .since here we see that mole not only scotched the snake but killed it. N. O. Pic. DIAMONDS OF BRAZIL A letter of July 31st from Pernamhuco says: 'Ju B thia business seems more healihy than at any other point of the coast. The diamoud mines in that vicinity prove very productive, and lrgj sums of money flaw hither in exchange for Miese gems; they are situated 00 leagues from the city, and some 30,000 people have formed a settlement there. A disturbance took place recently in which some Portuguese have been kilied, and the otiier foreigners driven from, the neighborhood by the Brazilians. The occupants of these mines are too numerous to be dispossessed by Government, who haying neglected the matter too loug, can - now get neither daty nor jewels. Over 100,000 worth of diamonds are said to have been sent to Europe by the last British packet, and if .this rate of production continues, the article will soon be cheap." OrThe Democratic papers declare that the election of Robert Dd Owen to Congress, is the greatest blessing that has ever been conferred on the western country. We look upon that event in any other light. We consider it a black and ir.fiunous curse to any community, to be represented in an honorable and important assembly, by such a loathing, abominable and outrageously infamous politician. What a curiosity is locofoco consistency and honesty. Last summer these same honest chaps, deoounced Mr. Clay as a black leg, Sabbath breaker and indeed (or all the villains imaginable entirely too immoral to be-President of this Republic or to told office in a civilized government, and now they consider the election of a man who advocates and preaches up doctrines, infamous and revol ting to every idea ot rennement ana civiiiza tion,as a blessing. But djnoency is pro

gressive. Kcntuckiat.
