Of honest "jours," who tease him sore ; " And he may not be unheedful; Tho' bright is the wit that can furnish there The means to relieve them all from care, By shelling tliem out the "needful" The following short, sketch of the life and rharactcr of General Washington, from the London Chronicle, of July 22d, 17B0, will be read with interest at the present day r ' - As this gentleman always refnsd to accept of any pecuniary appointment for hjs public services, no sninry has been annexed by Congress to his imperieni command, and he only draws weekly for the expenses ol his public table, and nther necessary demands. Getiersl Washington, having: never been in Europe, could notpossihly liTe set n mnch niilitary service when the rjuif f of Pritairi were sent to subdue the Americans; yet still, for a variety of reasons he was by much the most proper man on the continent, and probably any where else, to be "placed at the head o an American army. The very high estimation he stood in for integrity and honor, his engaging in the cause of his country from sentiment and conviction of her wrongs, his moder ation in politics, his extensive property and his approved abilities as a commander, were motives which necessarily obliged the choice of America to tall up on him. ' That nature has given Genera Washington extraordinary military talents, will hardly be controverted by his most bitter enemies. Having been early actuated with a warm passion to serve liia country in the military lime, he has greatly improved his tallents by unwearied, industry, a close application to the best writers upon tactics, and by a more than a common inethod and exactness. In reality, when it comes to be considered, that at first he only headed a body pf men entirely unacquainted with military discipline or operations; somewhat ungovernable temper, and who at best could only be styled an alert and good militia, ac'.tng under very short enlistments, unclothed, and at all times very ill supplied with ammunition and artillery; and that Wiljl such an army be withstood the ravages and progress of near 40,000 veteran troops, plentifully provided with every necessary article, conim.nlt tl XT th. hrav.,1 i"l fT! . r j i i PurAnat . I supported by a very powerful navy, which el'-i lectually prevented all moyemente by water; when all tins pomes to ue impartially eonsidere d we may venture to pronounce thai General Washington may bo regarded ns one of the greatest military ornamtnts of the present ge. . . - General Washington is now in the forty-sev enth year" of his age, he is a 'tall well made man. rather targe bnned, and has a tolerable gentle address; his features are manly and bold, his eyes of a blueish cast, and very lively ; hi 8 hair deep brown, his face rather long, and marked with 'he smalt pox; his complexion sun burnt and without much cojor, and countenance sensible, composed and thoughtful.- There is a. remarkable air of dignity about him, with a striking degree of gracefullness; ho has an excellent understanding, without much quickness; is . strictly just, vigilant and generous; an aifecjtonate husband, a faithful friend, a father to the deserving soldier; gentle in his manners in temper rather reserved ; a total stranger to religious prejudices, which have so excited christians ol one denomination tq cufthe throat? those ol another; in his morals he is irreproachable, and was never known to exceed the bounds ol the most rigid tempareuee, in a word, all his friends and acquaintances universally allow, that no man ever united in his own person a mere per fect alliance of the virtues of a phtlosplier, with the talents of a General ; candor, sincerity, a ni hility, and simplicity, seem to be the striking features of his character, till an occasion offers of displaying the most determined bravery and inaepeudenca of spirit.
Jack. Witt, a young half-breed Chero- i
Lawyer, was a few days since sentenc to receive 39 lashes on the bare back, for
passing a forged certificate. They were
well laid on. T he editor of the Cherokee Advocate remarks, "this was undoubtedly
the most feeling specimen of cutting Witt that ever came within our knowledge." Those Cherokees are witty folks. There is a young lady in Lynn, so con scientiously opposed to bondage in any shape, that she win not even Bind shoes. There is also a shoe-maker there, so tem perate that he will not use a Punch. "Pa, is Tom Thumb a great scholar in ariUimetic?' - . 'No my son; why lo you ask that strange question." ; "Because, Pa, the paper says he figured largely in London: 'Here, Sally, eive tins child a dose of and put him to bed, he will certainly be a : man before his mother, if he goes on at this i' A printer out west whose office is lialf a mile from any other building, and who hangs his sign on the limb of a tree, advertises for an apprentice. He says 'A boy from the country would be preferred.' A Wood -Sawing Humane Institution is actually in operation at Cincinnati, A com pany of philanthropist purchase great. quantities of wood, stow it away in a large yard, and there, all who are willing to work are employed as sawyers.; The citizens buy their fuel at the yard in such lengths, sizes and quantities as they desire. - - - li William," said a carpenter to his apprcn'ticv"l in going nway to day, and want you to grind all the tools.1' t ; , v j "Yes, sir." ...... - , . , i , flie carpenter came home at night. ' A lucky fellow to have a fence to .make rails to maul, logs to chop and brush to burn and we don't see but his paper gets uloii just as well. . ,.. . Oir The Arkansas Intelligencer says tlia there is a little nigger" in that Stale, whose heels are so long people don't know which way he is going to walkl "'' Ixtehejtino Facts m Brief. Out of every thonsaml men, twentv die annnally. - The number of inhabitants of a city or county is renewed every thirty years. The number of old men who die in cold weather, is to the number of those who di in warm weather, seven to four. The men able to bear arms, form the fourth of A the inhabitants of a country. The proportion between the deaths of women and men, is one hundred to one hundred and eight. The probable duration ol female life is sixty, but after that period the calculation is more favorable-to them than to men, One half those who are bofn, die before' they attain the age of seventeen. Among three thousand one hundred and iwen tv-rive wh die, it appears by the registers thai there is only one-person ot one hundred years of age.. More old men . are found in elevated situations than are found in valleys and plains. 'Jack, what o'clock is it? , ''Twas a dozen, sir, a little w hile, ago, lint.' taint any thing, now.". . . . .
