BATTLE OF GREAT BRIDGE, VII!-

December, 9, 1775. From officers who have arrived in town from Col. Woodforda camp since the battle ''of the Great' Bridge, 1 have, I think, collected a more particularly account of that action than any which has yet been communicated to the Dublic. You will therefore

oblige me by publishing it, and perhaps afford, at the same time, no disagreeable en- ". . . A - . L

itjiiaiiiuieui hi uui vuum j tn.ii . scene "of action is but little known to thegenrallity of people," it mHy be necessary to give some description of it, that the relation may be 'more .' clear and satisfactory. The great "bridge is buit over what Is called the southern' branch of Elizabeth river, twelve mile's above Norfolk. The" land on each side Is marshy to a considerable distance from the river, except at the two ' extremities of the bridge, where are two pieces of firm land, which may not .improperly be 'called email 'Islands;' bein? surrounded en-

tirelly by 'wafef and marsh, and joined to the mainland by causways. Ou the little piece of firm ground on the farther or Norfolk side,

'Lord Dunmore had erected his fort, in such U manner that his cannon commanded the causeway on his own side and the bridge between him and us, with the marshes around him. The Island on this sido of the

river contained six or seven houses, some of

which' were burnt downTthe nearest to the

hridae. bv the enemv, after the arrival of

'our troops; in the others, adjoining the causeway on each side,' were stationed a guard every nihtby Col. Woodford, but with drawn 'before day, that they might not be exposed

toiha fire of the enemy's tort m recnossins

the causeway to our camp, this causeway

Recorder. 'Both of you seem to have no inconsiderable experience, young as you are in the rules of court and criminal practice have you ever been up before a court before?1 ; , ." JohnsofV AVe is not bound to answerthat question 'cause our 'kracters haint been impeached.1 - , Brown aside to Johnson 'Right Jim, mum's the word about k'racters guess we aint quite so green as he takes us to be.' Recorder well I shall send both of you to the work-house for thirty days:you are evidently too idle too vicious, and I may add too cunning, to be permitted to go at large.' Johnson VVe calls for a trial by jury, your honor, and a speedy trial at that. Tiie con

stittnion guarantees to every 'Merican

zen.'and we aint agom to be ohizzled out

it no how.' - J " Recorder At all events I will send you

to the work house for the present. I wish

to see if 1 cannot learn something more a-

bout you.' :

Johnson fas the ofiicer took them out

of court -'Vel, then, I'm blown if we don't

get out on VLkactycorpy.

The unanimous opinion of all in court who

witnessed this 'forensic d'splay was, that

Masters Johnson anil Brown are a most prom

ising pair of youths, and most probably des

tined, in the course ot human eveuts, to add

to the productive industry of the State by a

residence for a fixed term in Baton Rouge.

' 2V. O. Picayune

being also commanded by their cannon". The

causeway on our side was in lengtn auout one hundred and fifty yards, and on the higli-

'er extremity our breast woni was thrown up

From the breastwork ran a street, gradually

ascending, about the length of lour hundred

yards,' to a church, where our main body were

encamped

'The great trade to Norfolk in shing'es,

tar. pitch, and turpentine, frpm the country

. back of this, had occasioned so many houses

to be built here, whence these articles weie conveyed to Norfolk by water. But this by the tve -such is the nature of the place

described to me, and such was our situation and that of the enemv. On Saturday, the

thh inst., after revielle beating, two or three great guns and some musketry were discharged from the enemy's fort, which, as it was , 'not an unsual thing, wa9 but little regarded fcy Col. Woodford. However, soon afterwards he heard a call to the soldiers tostand to their arms: upon which, with all expedi

tion, he made the proper dispositions to receive the enemy. In the meantime Colonel

Woodford very prudently restrained his troops from urging their pursuit too fai. From the hi" inning of the attack till the repulse from

the breastwork, might be about lourteen or fifteen minutes; till the total defeat upwards

hf half an hour. It is said that some of the

enemy preferred death to captivity, from a tear of bcino- scalped, which Lord Dunmore

inhumanly toldthem wouldbe their fate should

they be taken alive, J. uirty-one killed and

wounded, lell into our hands, and the num

ber borne oft' was much greater. Through

tlio 'whole of the encasement, every officer

Tand soldier behaved with the greatest courage

and calmness.

-' The conduct of our sentinels I cannot

Diss over iu silence. Before they quitted

Iheir stations they fired at least three rounds a thfi pnemv were crossing the bridge, and

one of them, who was .posted behimi some

id tin ft'lus. keot his ground till he had fired

eight times, and, after reciving a whole plattoon, made his escape over the causeway into "rinr hreast work. The scene was closed

with as much humanity as it had been conducted with bravery. The work of death bein" every one's close atlsniiou was directed tothe succor of the unhappy sufferers and it is an undoubted fact, that Captain Leslie was bo affected with the tenderness of our troops "towards those who were yet capable of as

sistance, that he pave signs troin the fort of

liis thankfulness for it. What is uot to be

paralleled in history, and will scarcely appear credible, except to -such as acknowledge 'a' Providence over . human afliirs, this

victorv was gaiued at" the expense of no more

than a slight wound in a soldier's hand ; and one circumstance which reiides it still more umazing, is, that the field-pieces raked the whole length of the street, and absolutely threw double-headed shot as fat a3 the church ,- and afterward?, as our troop? approached, cannonading them heavily with grape-shot. " : This W39 a second Bunker's Hill, affair, in miniature, with this difference (hat we kept our post, and had only one man wound- , ed in the hand. Letters of Colonel Woodford. - - - - OFFENDERS AND DEFENDERS.'

Here is a bit of solemn waggery from the

N. Y. Sunday Mercury.

"Tom, you seem to gain flesh every day

the grocery business must agree with you,

What did you weigh last?

"Well, Jonathan, I really don't remember

now; but it strikes me it was a pound o butter." . "
