We learn that parses will commence to bore for; oil Bear Hazleton in a short time., r-A gentleman has been engaged to bore a depth of five hundred feet. It is said, the prospect is fine. for Oil in paying quantities there.- . ; f ! tThe steamer H Mate" is now ply ing on -White river. Day before yesterday she ascended that classic stream as far as the railroad bridge, near Hazleton 1 r. m , I Recorder's Court. His Honor, Recorder Nelson, is not troubled of late with cases to any great extent. Yes terJay some parties made complaint of a woman for keeping a house of illfame, but npon mature reflection they concluded to withdraw the charere. and th accused paid the cost, and tffe mat ter was dropped. i ISyDaririz the month of March, and up to date,' the Recorder had but 'Jiftytight oases before him for investigation, By our, exchanges we notice .often that other cities of no greater popu lation than onr own, have: double the number of cases in half the length of time. During that month fines were assessed to the amount of $373. j Jctibilb Thieves. Day before yes terday, conpla of juvenile thieves en tered the grocery of a 'Ir. McCracken, at Hazleton, Iod., and finding no one in, helped themselves to what money they could find in the drawer. Yesterday morning Mr. McCracken caught, the boys, and by threats, a little Whipping, and the sight of a rope, caused them to deliver up the money about five or six dollars. j tgr-The deck hand that was shot by the barkeeper of the Marietta, night before last, of which mention was made in yesterday's paper is still in the city. The wound is quite a serious one . but not dangerous." The barkeeper 'had a trial before Esquire Walker, we .learn, and was acquitted on the ground that he did it in self defence. 1 No Cause to Fear. The New Albany Ledger seems to fear (hat the police of Indianapolis will disturb the peace and rjuiet of the bawdy houses of that city, in order to make costs. The Ledger probably fears (hat those dens of infamy ill be broken npt and there will, be no entertainment fonnd for the' members of the, next Democratic Convention. Jn 9nr notice of the resignation of Mr. Fould, the impression may have been created tUt some difficulty had arisen, resulting in the tender of bis resignation. Such was not the case, and we learn that there ia a probability of bis continuing his services in that connection. At a recent meeting of official members of the congregation, he was fe-elected to the same position. i v i Eickrd to Death 'bt a Mots, We learnt from a gentleman who came down on the train yesterday morning, that a gentleman by the name of Joseph Bingham was kicked to death by a mule day before yesterday, on Mr. Kirkham'a farm, about four miles from Pat ok a. , He bad been employed to labo? on the farm, and was riding sidewise on the animal to work, when it took fright and threw him off. In falling, he became entangled in the harness, the mule became frightened and commenced kicking,' resulting in a terribW- death to Mr.- B.f he-being kicked almost to pieces, as we are in formed. '' ' iBusiness was very brisk at the Bureau yesterday. Some of them could get tipsy three or four times a day, and still be heard late id the evening say " come Sam I wants some more dat dar whisky." Courier. i- - . .k Judging from the paragraphs we see ia yoUr paper of late, one would ;eome to the conclusion that you held the office of Inspector of the Bureau." iJ Former associations no donb make you pre-eav inently qualified for the position. ; Bopr Found. We Jearn that the body of a man was found at Gclconda a few days since, and buried, which is supposed to be the' body of Mr.. John App, . who, in company ' of three tJther gentlemen was drowned in front of the city sometime since. It is stated' that the body found bad a gun strapped over the shoulders, a gold watch in his pocket, an $ from the description given it is supposed to be the. body of Mr. App yet it would seem strange that the body shou'i float so far.'Sdtxie friendsof the deceased basa gone to Golconda, we are informed, lo learn Tfoe : Tacts' in tbecaeeX If this provta to La the bodyif .Mr - App, the bodies of all those nnfortunete gentlemen may be recovered. 41 "The 'number "of deaths 'in? the' United States artey daring the rebellion, exclusive of those who died from wounds and othgr "cftasss .after loaviog tKeir homes,

THi ClTT OF EVASaVii.LEjT'lXASCIALLr. Some time since, great cry was raided about Ibe fifiarcial condltioa of the City, and the excessive expenditures of the people's money. Such a great adi was made about it that a meeting was calledi and a committee appointed to inquire into ,the way oar City officers bad expended the people's money, which committee never reported. For the benefit of those who have had so much to say

in regard to this matter,, and for the in formation pf all, we compile the. following statement from the official report of the Mayor, as read last Monday night The following will show the indebtednerj of the city for a period of seven years:' Ia 1859 the Indebtedness wai... ai , ..(267 645 59 266 946 4 270,666 03 . 633 58 " 1861 isr 186.4 220.873 61 J 191 852 99 1885 ...... That the importance of this reduction may be fall J seen; we" wish to state what has been done during that period of time in the way of . public improvements. : la 1859 there were bat 2,240 lineal feet of .sewerage in the city; and, tot day, there are 15,814 lineal feet, and a great portion of it has been constructed when material and labor was at its high est - Thia taken in ' consideration with the vast improvements that have been made on pur streets in the way of bowldering, and 'other improvements, show toat the financial affairs of this city bave perhaps been" looked '" after with more care ihantany city jnltbe ' West; and more, an examination of the contracts for Improvements In the" city, will show that sock have been made at a cost as low, if not lower, than "similar work in any city of the else' of Evansville. Tax Case. At the last term of the Harrison County Circuit Court, Judge Bicknell decided that an appropriation made by the Commissioners of Harri son county of $61,200 was illegal., A man by the name of McCarthy was plaintiff. The facts in the case are about' .aft" follosf The Board of.Com missionera met on, .the .9th day of February, 1865, and made an appropriation of $61,200 to pay for volunteers and to refund money previously subscribed by citizens to procure volunteers and'sobStitutes to fill the;-.quota of Harrison county under the call of December 19, 1864, the Commissioners at the June term assessed a tax of $1 45 on each $100 worth of property, to meet this large appropriation. Heath township, in said eounty, on the 9ih of February, 1865, owed no men,' having previously filled her quota by private .eontriba tions. i .The plaintiff was a resident of Heath Township! and this was intended as a test case. It is said that there were many rich developements in the case in which the Democratic Auditor of that county was not flattered, and that the investigation of - the - case, ' shows his books to be in a deplorable condition. Democratic County Commissioners all over the State of Indiana, on the last draft, evinced a wonderful willing ness to shell out the people's money in the shape of large bounties, when it was ascertained the " war would not be a failure," and that the next haul would make a - sad, in-road into their party, nr. .1 l . t , we anow oi numoers wno refused a bounty of $75 to soldiers who fought in a doien battles, bnt gave willingly $600 each to those who never beard an enemy's gun fire, and did it, too, when there was no provisions made by which soldiers' property should be exempt from taxation, which provision was made by a Republicaal Legistatnre. Here is democratic support of the Government and the war for yoa. ' The old soldiers will not forget it. They will remember who were their .friends in the time of need, !': t . rr t 1 ' 1 sj i . Jdoaru of Health We have not heard ' from the Board of Health of late, but we feel sure that that body are doing what they deem, to be right in their judgment, at present; but, in view of the fact, that all expect the cholera t jis season, we think it would be well for all to re-double their energies in pre paring the city- for the coming'' of the pestilence. The Board of Health can be of much value to our people, by giv iag their Views in full of the beat means of policing the city. A few suggestions from that body, relative to that matter, might do good. j j ' ; To Commencc. The work of bowldering the streets will commence next week. Mr. Lowry is now here, and will push the work "forward vigorously. By Fall we can boast of a great improve ment in Evansville ir in . that respect.
