A wealthy and philantropio citizen of Indianapolis recently notified Col. Hornbrook of our city, that he had determined to raise and educate ten orphan-children of soldiers who had fallen in defense of their country. The selection of one of the ten was delegated to CoL Hornbrook. It is the wish of the gentleman to select those who were most destitute. He notified CoL Hornbrook that he had himself chosen one from the Marion County Poor House, and requested the Colonel to to visit our Poor House and ascertain if , any such orphans could be found there. Colonel Hornbrook at once called on Auditor Bisch, and Mr. J.' P. Elliott, our. Township Trustee,, and. was informed that Yanderbnrgh county did not send the orphans of soldiers, whose fathers had lost their lives in battle, to the County Poor House. Other and better provision was made for the ml ' The humane and liberal gentleman in Indianapolis deserves thanks ' for the eminently practical way in which he has taken hold of this truly benevolent enterprise. We are also pleased to learn that one of our citizens has determined, on raising and educating some orphan girl, whose father sacrificed his life for his country. These are worthy examples, and we trust they will be extensively followed. ': Thanksgiving Services. Several of the ministers of our city met at the Third Street Church, on Saturday afternoon, to take into consideration the manner in which Thanksgiving should be observed by their respective congregations. We understand it was thought best, in view of the unusual importance of the day, to hold divine services in their respective churches, in preference' to having anion services as heretofore. In order, however, to gratify a very general desire for anion services of some character, it was resolved to have a mass meeting of the Sabbath School children at the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church, at two o'clock, in the afternoon. In order to make the demonstration pleasant and profitable to all participating in it, we presume good music and good singing will be provided for the occasion. School 'Superintendents have the matter in charge, and will, no doubt, make such arrangements as will afford the litt'e people much pleasure and make the day worthy of remembranee. ' . Heatt Swindle. An old man named John McKinney, from Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, says the New Albany Ledgir, was swindled out of $1,200 by the - confidence dodge, last Thursday. McKinney was going to Madison, Indi ana, and had taken passage on the mail packet General Lytle. He was discovered by sharper No. I, and after an introductory conversation, which led to confidence' on the part of the elderly gentleman, the ; latter informed the sharper who and what he was, whither he was bound, his business, and the very important fact that he had $1,200, with which he proposed purchasing a farm. The old gentleman was induced to accompany sharper No. 1 up into the city, and in their perambulations," sharper No. 2 turned up with an unsettled account, amounting to $1,200. No. I handed out the irrepressible check," -vhich No. 2 could not change, and the result was, the bid gentleman advanced the required sum and took the check as security, after which the sharpers left him, and that completed the swindle.
Rec-okder's Court Bjoinesa in the Recorder's Couri, yesterday, was somewhat lively for a while. James Talbot was charged with running a cart without license, and for this offence he was fined $5.00 with costs, id all f9.30. John Henderson was fosnd drank ou the street, having a large key in his pocket a suspicious character was fined $5.00; costs, $6.95. Having no money he was sent to j&il to board it oat A young gentleman was fined $1.00 for discharging a pistol contrary to the provisions of the city law. Hiram Ray replenished the city treasury to the amount of $1.00 with costB, for hitching his horse to a shade . tree. Thomas McElroywas fined $5.00 for running a wagon without license, Martin Carl, William . Hawley, and Robert
Boyd all suspicious characters were charged with being asleep on a salt shed. Upon examination it was discovered tnat the trio had not the where with to pay the fine and costs, so they were discharged upon promising to leave the city ins'.anter. Thekev found on the person of John Henderson is in the hands of the Recorder, and the owner can have it by calling at his office.. At a meeting of Sabbath School Superintendents, yesterday afternoon, it was resolved to have the Sabbath School Union demonstration on Thanksgiving afternoon at too o'clock, instead oflliree o'clock, as generally announced in the churches. . Pastors are requested to give out the notice of the change in the hour of meeting at' their Wednesday Prayer Meetings, ., we call the attention of our patrons to the advertisements of Messrs H. O. Babcock, H. E Blemker, and Ja cob Straub k Sons. Each of these firms, in their respective business departments, are energetic business men, and are anxious enough to do a good business, to sell goods at low rates. We' trust purchasers will read their advertise ments carefully. Btjeol abies , in Tebbe Haute. The residences of W. R. McKeen, Banker, and of W. D. Griswold, at Terre Haute, were entered at an early hour on Thurs day night last and robbed of all the sil ver plate and ware in each house. The robbery was committed, it is said, be fore nine o'clock in the evening. . roBE. ine waoasn Jbxpresa says ikthe ; Messrs. Early have commenced slaughtering and packing hogs, being the first and only packers' yet in the field there. They were paying on Fri day$9$9 50 for hops weighing 200 pounds and upwards. No other houses have made any preparations for oper ating. ? i . Friday's Cincinnati Commercial gives the following quotations: ',' '. Hogs were in light offeriner, and some reaction in the temper of the market, is observable, though but few transactions were made to give a practical indication of the range of prices. Ihe ruling fig' ures appear to be $S to $10 for them gross, $11 to $12 for net weights the outside figures, however, applying to extra quality and weight . , The New Albany Ledger says, on the same subject : ' We are told by our farmer friends that hogs never increased in " weight faster than they do the present season. The extraordinary : mild and warm weather, and the very superior quality ot the grain conspire to make the pork er's path to his final destiny smooth and oily. At the present prices of fresh pork a good hog is to-day worth more than the best - corse in the county twenty years ago. The universal diffa sion of the Jewish religion is the only salvation the world can look for from the terribly high price of pork. . I We have heard of no preparations for slaughtering hogs in this city. . We do not know what our b.utchers and meat men pay for hogs round, but we do know they charge twenty centi a pound for pork steaks. '; J 1 ' ' ' -- ! IS?" The total " valuation of property in Marion county on the tax duplicate for next year is $32,448,033; of this amount Center township, including the eity of Indianapolis, furnishes $21,945,' 859 a respectable showing. ' , . . I Miss Mollis Williams made her first appearance this season in the comedy of "Katty O Shiel, and was greeted with appropriate applause. Miss Mollie pes sesses a remarkable faculty of rendering an Irish character, as well as the power to please, and she was more than once called to the stage a second time. Her rendition of the character' "Katty O'Shiel," was highly amusing.' . Mr. Grierson, in the character of "Duke St. Lor me," sustained himself well and was frequently applauded.' in the afterpiece Mr. Vincent as "Handy Andy" acquitted himself with distinguished ability as a comedian. His reception, as well as Miss Williams', was most cordial, and we sincerely hope those talented artists will be the recipients of crowded houses during their sojourn in our city. . To-night will be produced the "Wizard Skiff' with all the original music. Miss Williams will appear in three characters, a "Greek Girl," the "Pirate Boy," and the "Wild-Zingara."; 'Her impersonation of a male character never fails to bring forth loud and prolonged applause. .i. . -lf. . . . . . ; In the concluding play, the "Object of Interest," Felix A.
