t - r MONDAY .DECEMBER 4. "Ho do vcJu like codfish balls, Mr. Wiggins?" Mr. Wiggin, hesitatingly "I really don't know, Miss; I don't recollect attending one. " Oh.' don't! A mother who was in the habit of asking her children " before they retired for the nipht, what they had done that day to make' others happy, found her twin daughters silent. The question was revested. " I cn remember nothing good all day, dear mother, only that one of my school mates was happy, because she had ' rained the head of the class, and I smiled on her and ran to kiss her1, so ehe said I was food. That is all, dear mother," f , I The other spoke still more timidJt. MA little girl who sat with me on. the bench at school has lost a little brother. I saw that, while ehe studied her lesson, she hid ber face id her book and wept. 1 felt sorry, and laid my face in the same book ana wep with ber. she then looked ' up and was comforted, and pat her arms around my neck; bat I do not know why be said 1 bad done ber good. A few nights ago a gentleman stopping at the house, who had been unloading too much glassware to be steady in his legs or lucid as to bis brain, came in and passed through the hall in search of his , room. ' Reaching the mirror at the end of the ball, he cought sight .of the reflection iD the glass and mistaking it for an atiacne ot me notei, aaaressed it as loJlows: Will you show me my (hie) room I please T" A pause and no reply. He spoke again is a louder tone. " Can you tell me where for seven is?" Keceiving no answer to his mterroga- ; tion, he turned indignantly on bis heel, and sought clerk Billy Wilkensoa, and said: : "Whose tha feller in the (hie) hall? juos pertinent teller ever saw. Mothers, Fat Tour Children to Bed. - There may be some mothers who feel t to be self denial to leave their parlors, pt fireside', or work, to put their children to bed. Tbey think that the nurse conld Jo it just as well; that it is of no consequence who ' hear the children say their prayers." "".--,'- ' Now , setting asido the pleasure of pening the little bed and tucking the " darling np, there are really important reasons why the mother shoo Id not yield this privilege to any other. In the first place, it is the time of all times when a child is inclined to show its confidence and affection. All its little secrets come oat with more troth and less restraint; its naughtiness through the day can be reproved and talked over with less excitement, and with tbe tenderness and calmness necessary to make permanent impression. If the little one haa shown a desire to do well and be Obedient, its effort and success can be acknowledged and comynended in a manner that need not rendes it vain or self satisfied. . . , . We mntt make it a habit to talk to oar children, in order to get from them- an expression of their feelings. We cannot understand the character of these little ones commited to oar care Unless we do. And if we do not know Vbat they are, we shall not be able to govern tbem wisely, or educate them as their different natures demand. . - . Certainly it would be unwise to excite young children by too much conversation with them just before putting them to bed. Every mother who carefully studies the temperature of their children will know how to manage them in this respect. ' But of this all mothers may be assured, that the last words at night are of great impootanoe, even to the babies of tbe flock; the very tones of the oica tbey last listned to make an impression on their sensitive organization. Mother, do not think the time and strength wasted which you spend in reViewing the day with your little boy. or girl; do not neglect to teach it how to pray, and to pray for it in simple earnest snguage which it can understand, -ioothe and quiet its little heart after the experience of the day. It ' has had its disappointments and trials as well as its play and pleasures; it is ready to throw ts arms around yonr neck, and take its ood night kiss.
