We are glad to learn that Stahl, the batcher, who was report ed shot at three times and mortally rounded, is alive and .veil. The report of his misfortune is wholly incorrect. He was not mortally wounded, was not wonnded at all, was not shot at three times, was not shot at any time that be knows of, and is therefore not expected to die from the mortal wound which he did not receive. . ! Recorder's Court. Most ef the business transacted before bis Honor, -the Recorder, on Saturday, wire cases of nuisance growing out of the case against Riddle on Friday, and will no doubt re sult in a better sanitary condition of the city. - - j Another, and the last, of the three young men wbo drove fast and shouted aloud on Sabbath a week, put in his ap pearance on Saturday, owned up andreceived the same sentence as the others, (o-wit: $5 and costs, ' ;n . A Contemptible Outrage - The copies of the Evansville Journal, left at the door of the Evansville National Bank on Saturday morning, were torn to pieces by some contemptible pitiful thieving scoundrel, and the pieces lef: lying on the step. If any one has a spite acr5:.nst the Bank or the Journal office let them take it ont on the Book keeper 'of the Bank, or tbe Local editor here. Alex, and our.elf will take it kindly. - i r The last boat in the line, the superior, nas (riven np the ghost, and will come to JNew Orleans and Jjoni ville for business where the people do business, and not gassing. tfew Albany liedgery . Gassing is jus. what New Albany does do, or at least the 'Ledger part of, it, There is not a s'eamboat captain, clerk, or mate on the river but what knows that Evansville does more shipping ia the c? tree of a year, by river, than New Albany 'and Louisville both. In fact, New Albany lis not considered in the ring, and nobody bat the Ledger ever mentions that ci.y in connection with steamboat lines. ' Indeed, of so little importance was New Albany considered that until an Evansville firm opened a branch house, the Louisville and Hen derson Packet Company did not deem it necessary to land a mail there. : '" j By the way, Ledger, is that trip-hammer establishment repaired? The Ada Lyon is losing valuable time and money by w iiting for the shaft that New Albany and Louisville have contracted to make between this and spring? '. "f j Fires in the CouifTEY. On Friday evening, about 5 o'clock, the house of Sir. Philip Baber, on the New Harmony road, near the St. John's Lutheran Church, took fire, probably accidentally, while the family . were abroad, and was entirely consumed with all its contents. The flames communicated to the barn and also to tbe stable, and they with all their contents, including a valuable Separator, were totally destroyed. Mr. Raber's loss is said to be heavy, and was only partially insured. j ' Another. About 4 o'clock on Friday morning, the barn of Mr, Joseph Hartlein, in German Township, with all .its contents, was destroyed by fire, supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. We did not learn the extent of Mr. Hartlein's loss or if there was any insurance. There is bat little doabt but that there Is a gang of robbers and incendiaries I prowling throagh the country committing depredations and outrages. They should be hunted down and properly disposed of by hanging or incarceration in the Penitentiary.. . . . 5. The city of Lafayette through its council, has extended to the other cities of Indiana an invitatien to send one or more representatives of their respective Common Councils to nnite in a convention at tha Council Chamber of Indianapolis at an e,r!y day, for the purpose of securing such amendments to the act of incorporation as may be deemed necessary. New Albany will be represented is this Convention by Mr. Bradley. N. A. Ledger. . Evansville has the start of her sister cities in this as iu rsany other particulars. Onr charter has Utn so amended as to make it one of the most liberal and effective in the State. It possesses most of the advantages, with few of the drawbacks, of the . Columbus City ...... 4S6S 0 Total . :.85,06,441 H : It will be observed that Evansville, the 'second city' of the State in population, and the first in commercial importance, is ' omitted from this Uist altogether. We do not know whether the omission occurs in Gen.-Terrill's report, or in the Journal ' abstract If in .he feportj the omission proves it to be unreliable, and not worthy the praiae bestowed upon it If. oar namesake at tha Capitol has made the mistake it is nothing more than what it has so frequently done before, as to induce as to expect nothing better of it " We have, not the figures by us shall endeavor to get them shortly but we are satisfied the -city of Evansville has expended between $60,000 and $100,000 for bounties and for the relief of soldiers' families.' What is more to the credit of the city, and what few' of our sister cities can affirm, the city is not in debt one dollar for all this vast sum. It adopted Randolph's rule of "paying as you go, if you will get rich," and paid over the amount in cash, without issuing bonds or orders. We challenge any other city of the State to a similar showing. Yet if the Journal makes a fair extract from 'Gen. Terrill's report onr city is deserving of no mention for its liberality and patriotism in this particular. We cannot think Gen. Terrill would be guilty of such, injustice. ' w. . e , A Pbalseworthy Esterprise. We are , gratified to learn that John F, Glover, Esq .-of our' c:ty, and some other liberal gentlemen, have in contemplation the erection of a large hall or "tabernacle," for the accommodation of the Mission Sabbath School of our city, and such other moral and intellectual entertainments as may see proper to use I it It is proposed, we believe, to organize a Joint Stock Company, with a capital of say $10,000, to lease a large and suitable lot in an accessible part of the city, and erect thereon a substantial frame building thai will be able to seat comfortably from 1,500 to 2,000 people. On Sundays this immense room will be used for the Sabbath School, and on week days and nights will be rented - for such gatherings as may wish to occupy ittxxlt ia thought the building will rent for a sum sufficient to pay a reasonable interest on the investment, to say nothing of the -advantage the city will derive, from a large, well-regulated aad prosperous Mission Sabbath School. Oar Mission School has been losing in nambers and interest since it was compelled to abandon Crescent City Hall, to make room for a Billiard Saloon, and the present undertaking in its behalf makes a direct and strong appeal to every friend of Sabbath Schools. i A public meeting is called for Tuesday evening next at the Council Chamber, for1 the purpose of effecting an organization of the Stock Company, and opening the subscription books. ' We trust our people will not only extend their sympathy to the enterprise, bat will also be prepared, when called on, to take stock. . The entire capital ought to be subscribed and tbe work began with' in a few days. ; The building might be completed ready for occupation within a month. -' ..i Excitement in Warrick. A gentle' matt wbo returned Atom Uoonville on Saturday informs as that there is ' no little excitement in that town,' and in the county, arising from a rumor that the late Copperhead County Treasurer has proved a defaulter to the tune of nine or ten thousand dollars. 'It was moreover suspected that the aforesaid gentleman of the " coppery persuasion hud departed the county, leaving his se curities to arrange matters with the Commissioners. We thins it was very naughty in him to go to steal the peo ple's money, if he did so, as It may in jure the reputation of his party for hon esty. v ;- . . .-' j..,.. -J m ' V Persitent. We are informed that the young woman who attempted to leave ber child on the ' mail train on Tuesday evening, attempted to desert it also at the American House on Friday morning, and was only prevented from so doing by being locked in her room until train time, when she was sent buck to Vincen. nes. " We are farther Informed that she manifestly designed starving the child, as she persistently refused to nurse it, although it was evidently suffering from hunger, and a kind hearted Tady at the hotel was compelled to furnish it nour ishment dating' tbe night to qaiet its cries. It would almost seem incredible that such a monster could exist in the form of a woman. We learn that Conductor Eirkman was in charge of the train on Thursday n'gh, and not Pearson. It is mighty hard for any one to ' get ahead of J. B. much. -r -V . . I New Music. We are indebted to D. P. The sermon was a very able one and fall of plain practical truths. We regret that we have neither time or space to give an extensive synopsis of it We took very fall notes and may take occasion to write them 'up hereafter. ' , '', .' -'A , Arrested. Marshal Tenvoorde yes. terday arrested a man who had stolen 'a bolt of calico and several cloth caps from the store of Messrs. Jaqness & French.' , The thief made several adroit dodges, but Tenvoorde is mighty hard to head off when he gets track of .one of these rogues.
