Anentartainmentof the kind would li- instructrve, and to intelligent men and women should be" more intereating than ti eircas or nejro show, to which our people extend such a liberal patronage. JU;t us have John U. baxe, Kv. War! Ueecher and other distioguisbed lecturers, during the winter. : tT We have lived over forty years ' in this world, and it is a source of great congratulation to ourself thai the only P'Tnuiu that wa Cnd abasing us are traitors and their allies, or thieves and their abettors. The only men who eyer called us a drunkard are such as have been pulled from the gutter themselves. Wo ucs! the editor of the Vincennea Sun would coness this if he was axed by the right person. - ; Tho Future of Evuntvllle. " Tliere l a tide in the aff .Ire ol men, VVnn.li, .Uit. n at Ita tt jod, lead on In fortune. " Andethere is a tida in the histories of cities, which leads to commercial wealth mil importing, if taken at its flood. Tho epoch hers indicated has just arrived in tho history of Evansville,, and it behooves nut- people to look well to it that they do not let the tide ebb before making sail. ' ; ' ' There i no town or city ob the Ohio rivt;r so admirably located as Evansville fjr the great sntrepot of; Southern products. ' A straight line drawn from Evansville to New York or Boston is the shortest line that can be drawn from any point on the river below New Albany, and a straight line from New Albany to either of those cities would bisect the Ohio river four time?, which, would be impracticable. . , . ; The present railroads from Evaas villa to Indianapolis, and thence east enables freight to be carried from the south to the ' Stat line before it could reach New Albany by river. It is thence 160 miles to Cincinnati by river, or over 1(H) miles to Indianapolis by railroad and some 70 miles to the' State line. This gives the EvaasViUe, route near 200 miles the advantage over any rical poiut on tha Ohio river. ' ' ' 1 f ' With a Straight Line Railroad to Indtauupolia this advaataga ould be in. creased some 50 miles or more, and freight shipped by this route would reach CresUine or Cleveland by the time ifwere ready to leave the Ohio at any other point above as. The river to Evansville from all points below is eeldom obstructed by low water or ice. With All these ' natural advantages, it will ba the fault of her own citiav.ns, if Evansville does not become tha great commercial metropolis of tba Ohio and ilissiiippi Valley. To attain this end what is needed on tha part of our citiaiis? We reply, sagacity, ener gy, liberality, determination, and perse verance. " ' ' ' S -s If our capitalists wbo have accumula, ted vast fortunes, will atop long enough in the work of making money, they can rteadilv comprehend ail tha local advantages we have enumerated, and it would be a crime against their own. good name and memory a crime against their children and alf the -future generations that shall inhabit this city, if they do not take advantage of this tide now at its flood. .., . r. Ia the first place, we need a railroad opened from this city to Nashville, Ten nesee, that will bring to us the pro ducts of the teeming tarms of southwea. tern Kentucky and middle Tennessee. , ?sext we need a Straight Line Kailroad to Indianapolis, 'to 'improve onr Eastern connection. Such oolice men should be mustered out ol the service at once. The duly of l09 police ia plain. Nor is it their duty to molest or stop on the street any roan going along on leaitiuiate business, or on his way home from business. There ia no ordinance that forbids a man being out doors all night if he has business or inclination, if he behaves himself. We are personally friendly to all the police officers, so far as we know them, and commend them for their vigilauco, but in one or two cases, as appeared from their own evidence, as well as from the testimony of others, they allowed their leal to surpass their, judgment. They must expect suth tniiilakes to occur. They do in every city. In the two cases in this city, now ia our mind, in which the Recorder discharged the parties accused, be did right, and would have perverted justice and jadgmect bad be decided differently. We hope those po. liecmen who have signified their purpose to make no more arresis, will reconsider their determination, nd with judgment and prudence continue in the discharge of their duty. awaBaaMManBMHMnaetMi Amusements. Mrs. Bella Golden received a magnificent ovation On the occasioo of her reappearance oo Saturday night at the New MetropolitanThe large bait bas beeu elegantly fitted up, and the stage furnished with admirable scenery, and the immense audience which crowded tha hall to its utmost capacity, was a fitting testimonial to the energy and good taste'of Mr. Golden, as well as an unmistakable evidence of tha high estimation in which his gifted wife is held by our citizens, as an artiste. On her appearance on the stage, shs was greeted with prolonged and deafening applause, wl.ich was frequently repeated during the evening, and the responded by really surpassing ail her former ef forts in. the city, liar voice is fully re stored, and she appears to possess new life, and a more perfect appreciation of ber position. The universal deciaiors of the audience . was, "excellent," "magnificent." Mr. Grierson bare himself admirably as Sergeant Scalade, and as the Duke St Ltvrme, in the afterpiece, and proved bimself an actor of no ordinary mer'.' Mr.' Harry Watson's recitation of "The Maniac" was very felici'-ops and was well received. -, The- inauguration of the New Metropolitan" was a splendid success, and we hope Mr. Golden may reap many such harvests.
