r We trust that the Union men of- our city will not forget that the County Convention is to assemble at the CourtflousS" this afternoon at one o'clock. It is especially desirable that the Convention be well attended. The very important offices of Auditor, 8heriff, and County Commissioner are to be filled. ,at the October election, and it behooves the Union men to nominate good and capable men for those positions, if they expect to succeed in electing them. H "i V ; i i .'I - ;. i , ; Him I i-4w It - Oar Primary Convections are never attended as they ought to be. Business men, especially, always .have, some excuse for being absent from the Conventions,' and yet are quite ready to find fault if incompetent or dishonest men are put in nomination. They should take this matter into their own hands. They should see to it lhat none but good men are nominated, -t and s then there will be no occasion for fault finding. aBad nominations are fully as chargeable to those whp 'stay away from Conventions and ref ase to do their duty, as to those who participate" and make on wise selections. f , ?..t i - The prosperity of the county depends largely upon the business capacity, prudence, and integrity of out County Commissioners; yet how indifferent are the people as to who is nominated and elected to that positioal -It not infrequently happens indeed, may we hot say ! it most always happens that men are chosen' for the management and. disbursement" of thousands npon thousands of "the people's money who are ignorant of the first principles of political economy, and who never, in all their Jives, were personally inter ested in' anycommerciaPor business transactions that involved more than few hundred dollars. The sys tematic and unblushing misrepresenta tions of Copperhead newspapers is on paralleled in the history of the world. Some leading spirit in the semi-rebel fraternity some elder child of the Fa ther of Lies, such as he -of the Chicago Times or New York New t puts forth a lie, and straightway the whole family pass it along, adding to and increasing its magnitude as it goa . No matter if it be contradicted by official authority and the - most irrefragable documentary evidence, these pa pars never allow their dupes to know tne trutn.'-' Tbe most silly falsehood recently put forth was that the Fourth National Bank of New. York bad earned in six months $255,000, while its capital stock was but $500,000; and although it has been officially announced that the capital stock of the bank ia $10,000,000, not one of these lying sheets has had the honesty to make the correction. He came fully np to the expectations of all who expected to witness a low vulgar exhibition. Yincenne Sun. What' is the head and front of Lozier' s offending in the eyes of this man Greene? Simply fhat he has been loyal to the nation has devoted himself to the. relief and ameleoration of the soldiers of Indiana in the field, in the camp, in the' hospital, and In the rebel prisons. .Lie has been the instrument by which thousands have bees thus relieved and benefitted. We bad not the pleasure last night of hearing the performanoa at Masonic Hall, but our representative, gives elsewhere a very just report of the entertainment, and we are assured by some of the best musical critics in the city that a more worthy and excellent troupe has never visited Evansville; and we . sincerely hope that, as they have kindly consented to remain another evening, the Hall will be crowded to-night by those who delight in gooa and pleasing music, And who desire to encourage and patronize reel talent. Let the Hall be crowded, as it will be .a compliment to the musical taste of the city. Attempt at Highway Robbery. A acgro soldier, while driving down Broadway yesterday noon, was called to a halt by a white soldier. The negro obeyed the command,- when tbe white soldier advanced, grasped tbe briddle, drew a dirk-knife aad demanded the negro's money. The negro Reversed his whip, introducing the butt-end of the same to the soldier, saying, "Ef yon don't dis leef dat bridle go I'll dia mash yon frew de earf." . The soldier released the bridle and scampered off, apparently glad to be permitted to do to. LouitvilU Journal. - Gar. Bctler'r Resisbatiob. The New York Tribune says that the recent statement that has found its way into the papers, to the effect that Gen. Butler has never tendered bis resignation, does great injustice to that gentleman. The truth is, that the General not only tendered his resignation, but called npon the President and begged him to accept it, as be desired to' close np his affairs with the Government, go to New York, and resume the practice of law. The President declined, saying that his present reconstruction policy was an experiment; he did not know how it would succeed; and, if it failed, he would want the General to go into the South and take told. For this reason the resignation ws'not accepted. Speech of Gex. Logab. Major Gen. Logan' recently addressed a large crowd
at Jacksonville, Illinois, npon the occa sion of a serenade, and ia referring to the reconstruction policy of the Admin istration, he said it was but an experi ment, and he was willing to endorse it so long as there was any hope of its success. . He confessed, however, that he did not like this wholesale system of pardoning rebels. He was opposed to the restoration of tbe rights of citiaen ship until the rebels had brought forth fruits meet for repentance. He can tioned bis auditory in the most pungent terms to avoid companionship or frater nization with any person or party who had sympathized with rebellion, or ita aiders or abettors. His speech lasted upwards of an hour, and was frequently interrupted by tbe most impressive cheers. : SwiSDLED OUT OF 0E HUVSREO DoL labs. Last nigbt a gentlemen from Kentucky, whose name we did sot learn made complaint at tbe Hammond Street station-bouse tbat he had been swindled oot of one hundred dollars by the con fidence game. The Kentuck ian got acquainted with the "agree able sharper, and suspecting nothing wroDfr, loaned tbe hundred dollars on a forged check, " till tbe bank opened. Of course the sharper was not to be seen after he received the money. Tf neoole would read the papers, tbey would not so easily be taken in by tbese oily tongued confidence scoundrels. General Kilpatrlck and ttie Democ racy. The New Jersey Herald is very indig nant that this dashing officer should cut loose from the opposition and join the Union party, and claims tbat he is guilty of ingratitude in so doing, to which charge the General replies: "So far from being thankful for the notice of me in the New Jersey Herald anring tne war, and tbe alleeed ass at Lance rendered to seenre mi advance ment, 1 was actually alarmed when any nrtiuiw appeared in 11s columns in my praise, and I at once asked my friends, What blunder have I made, and how have I injured tbe cause? , I well knew the New Jersey Herald only praised tnose woo Diunaered most "Besides, I would rather not have had tbe praise ot those who had not the manbood to join and fight for tbe trai tors of the South, but like cowards re mained at home, encouraein?. bvall the sneaking means in their power, the ene mies ot tne union. Referring to a charge that he had car ried two newspaper correspondents with his command for tbe purpose of writing up his exploits, the General says: "For the past two years I have served under that illustrious chief. General Sherman, whose aversion to newspaper reporters was long since established, and during that whole time I never saw a newspaper reporter save one who visited me on one occasion, when, for a remark made in presence of my Adja taut General, he was kicked out of my headquarters, as any other lying news paper reporters or editors, the editor of the New Jersey Herald included, will be if they should chance to visit my head quarters, l am well satisned with the good opinion the people of Sussex have formed of me, and have no fears that the Herald can change that opinion by cowardly attacks and false statements made in my absence. A dispatch was received from Governor Bramlette offering a reward of $250 for tbe delivery of Williams at the county seat of Metcalf County, ia accordance with which Lieutenant Wiluama left last night in the Louisville train with his prisoner. Williams confesses the act, but avers it to have been done ia selfdefence.
