The crowds . attending the great show was immense. ' Useaampled M e ann ess. We are informed on reliable authority that a man aamed Luck, from Vincennes, on Friday last lost two thousand dollars in 7.30 Bonds in this city. 1 Dr. Bierbower, of the firm of Bier bower & Jones, Den tests, in Marble Hall, found the bonds and returned them to the man Lock, tcho did not even thank him for his kindness. !' The Democracy of Spencer Connty have re cently made another exhibition of their love for the soldiers. In crder to make some political capital, they got op a Soldiers' Reception at Elizabeth, Spen cer County, a few days ago. The Union men were invited to participate, and had a majority on the committee of arrangements, and arranged that Capt. Alvah Johnson should make a speech, which he did before dinner. ' ' After dinner, the soldiers called for Col Wright, a veteran of the entire war, but the Copperheads objeoted, one of them remarking thai they had had one "d d Abolition speech, which was enough." Capt, Bryant, formerly of the 42d Indiana, a Copperhead, announced that there were objectiona to Col Wright speaking, aad he would not be allowed to do so, and he was of conn excluded from the privilege, of addressing bis compenions-in-arms. This is another exemplification of the love and respect the Copperhead Democracy entertain for the soldiers. The soldiers will bear these things in mind "hen solicited to vote for the men who denounced them as Lincoln hirelings when ia the field. (jeoboe Wolflin. August 25th; 1885. - Graphic Statement of'Unconsldpred ,1' ,- , Trifles.":.' - . The following wsggish account of the duties and perplexities ot a- " Local," is from the pen of the Local ef the Louisvilla Union Press. We- fully endorse and' heartily adopt the views of the aforesaid. Local, especially, those portiona which 'relate to -ubiquity, the suppression of the names of. thieves, parties to cases of mm "eon, and rowdies, passbrokerage and bluck mail, and we desire i distinctly understood that we will accept no bribes on the street corners, unless they consist cf corner lots; and it must be further understood that we shall not furnish free passes to shows, tbe theatre, or on steamboats, as compensation for local, items or gratuitous advice, relative to the proper manner of conducting our columns. "' ' Personal. The Local wishes this morning to say a few words to his ten thousand friands in the city. He cannot be expected to be in several parts of the city at the same time, and therefore cannot be expected to pick up every little occurrence during the day. He tberetore requests that bis friends in the different sections of the city will report to him all murders, robberies, rapes, shooting affairs, sadden deaths, eta By doing this they will.- save him a great amount of -labor, and" confer a favor on the ten thousand readers of the Press. Fcr all such favors we will reciprocata The Local would also take this oppor tonity of making a few explanations, most cf which are applicable in his every-day transactions In 'the "first place, he. is not one of the proprietors of the Press, but ia workioor for a salary, (150 per week, more or less,) and has to consult the wishes and interest of the proprietors. They have devoted a portion of the paper to pews 'matter, and the rest to advertisements, for whicb there is etill room. The Local cannot be expected to .taste a brand of wine in a liquor store, and forthwith give the proprietor thereof the advantage of a column "pofl" Neither can he, for a handfaL of wormy pea nuts, Itemite a 4 confectionary narry time. He does not know bow many feet aqd inches a racehorse jumpejl on the third quarter of the last rjHl of four-mile heat He publishas the result of the races as they occur, and ia generally correct.,. . , 'lhe Local has no season tickets to the Mammoth Cave or the Hawesville coal mines, and therefore cannot lend them to families who wish to make a cheap summer excursion. Again, be does not have thirteen hundred and ninety-five tickets to every i&ow or thea"Ti -J!'?! .Ferfornlce ia the city: and if be did, it would not be right to distribute them all over the city. They are not transferable. He o-oaa tn plates as a matter of business, and .net
for plfAjsrs. Amusements pay for their advertisements, and should not be im-
oied on by persons who have the ad vantage. Tbe .Local is not personally acq nam ed with every 'star' actress, actor or ballet girl, and is not authorized to give introductions to them tbe n st day a!rr their arrival in the city. He baa so free passes over railroads and steam boats to lend. In a word, be baa no control over each things. - He cannot advertise a person's business simply because he has had extended to him the common courtesies of life. - Tbe Local is expected to TiabHsb the police proceedings as they transpire, and has not tbe power to leave oat the name of any person, simply because he or she is respectably connected. Therefore all of fers of tafg, cap?, boots, neckties or greenbacks for such favors wilt be in dignantly rejected, especiultt vhen offeted in the vresence of the proprietors. I be L.ocai cannot, or ongoi not, k do expected to miss a warm dinner (or tne purpose of witnessing the operations oi a new gan plough. Tnese are only a few of the things a Local has not the power to do. He has many favors shown him that he is thankful for, and daily meets oersons who have consider ation for his position. To these he is ever grateful, and assures those persons that they have bis daily prayers. In conclusion, allow the Local to give some valuable instructions to bis admir ing friends. He cannot attend a weddi'jr at an hour's notice, nor can he "s'aod no" with a couple every night. rT-csonot tro bail for a person at the police codrt simply because he has had an introduction to him, or because he is a patron of the -paper. He cannot in sert a marriage notice, accompanied with wine and cake, unless a small en velope containing fifty cents and a re sponsible name is sent along. He is cot prepared at all times to write verses for such things. - He accepts all presents that are not made in the shape of bribe. He is particularly fond of good clothes, and needs a hat badly (not a bad bat) at present No old clothes received' except as rags. Articles sent to bis residence not received until drayage is paid. In conclusion, tbe Local would re spectfully state that be is not an orphan asylom. He is not able to. adopt into bis family every foundling of the city. He will cheerfully attend to any legiti mate business on tbe street, but would prefer to have patrons -came to the office, where they will be civilly treated. s - Horrible Affbat One Mas Killed Tbe Murderers in Jail. Saturday evening about dark, an old man named James Knight, his son Joseph Knight, and three o'Ziet men who live ten miles west on the Fans road were returning from this city. When near tbe residence ol John Goodman, four miles of here they passed another wagon in which were ' Jordon Creasy, his wife, Casy Creasy, M. Van Creasy, James Black and Pleasant Noel. As they passed, the latter party hallowed to them to stop Tbe former not doing so, one of the Creasy s ran ahead and caught the reins ef Knight s horses, and the others com menced throwing stones and other mis siles knocking two of the men in Knight's wagon senseless. Knight then got out of the wagoo, when the villiang went at him with their knives, cutting bim on the bead, face, arms and abdomen in a most horrible manner, from the effects of which he died yesterday afternoonJoseph Knight, going to the assistance of bis father, was cut in several places, but bis wounds, although severe, are not dangerous. Tbe villians then went on toward home. In the meantime the neighbors attracted by the attray, collected to th number of some tweoty-five, and gave pursuit About fonr miles from the scene of the affray the assaulting party was overtaken, iney made no resist ance, and were brought back. Yester day they had an examination before Morgan B. Jarred, a Justice of the Peace, in Sugar Creek township, who held the men in several sums to answer at the Circuit Court. Noel obtained bail, and the Creasys and Black were bronght to the jail here yesterday evening. The wife of Jordan Creasy, who ia tbe principal prosecuting witness, was held to appear in the sum of $1,000, which security she failed to obtain, was also placed to jail. u John P. Baird appeared for the prose cution, ana nuiiam Alack for the de fence. . We understand two of the Creasys have been in the rebel army, and the others are of similar strina. Wabaih Pxpress.
