But the substitute would have preferred that ths part of the announcement relative to himself bad not been made; however, the Journal readers will find consolation - in a quotation made by an Illinois Representative a few years ago, which, he contended was Scripture: " Blessed are they, who expect nothing, for tbey shall not be disappointed." to Fike Alarm. A.11 the White river bottom lands in Daviess county are inundated with water. It is said tbat not less than ten thousand acres of corn will be seriously injured, and much en. tirely destroyed. The water was never known to b ao high at this season of the year. Some large crops of tobacco are utterly mined. ' t&" Lieutenant Edward P. His regiment is still stationed at Fort Don elson and Clarksville. v a . - 1 . 1 ' " e 11 iii -w The Cause The more sagacious of the Democratic party say that it is tbe price of whisky , that keeps their party down at the heel tbst the Government, in fixing ao high a tax on that exhilarat ing liquid, hit upon the only possible thing tbat conld take the wind out of the sails of the old Democratio ship. Shot One dty lait week a difficulty occurred between some parties . near Winslow, Pike county, Indiana, in which one of the parties was shot througb 'one shoulder. We did not learn the names of either, of the persons engaged. It would seem tbat after so much blood has been spilled, and so many lives lost, tbat the people would be more quietly disposed. tTSeymonr, Indiana, baa" recently been incorporated as a city, and is put' f - r a ting on city airs wonderfully. As long as that downtrodden race behave "in a white com munity, we are at a loss to see why such a hatred should exist against the unfortunates. Tbe first page contains a map showing the dinarent railroad connections by which people may get to fort Wayne from, all parts of tbe State north of New Albany and Vincennes. Tbe map leaves all that part of the Stale' south of those cities in the dark as to the best ronte to the State Fair. One would naturally suppose tbat the second city in the State would be represented on a map published under the auspices of the State Agricultural Association, did they not know - -u.Lon or mat association are oui mue acmint with tbe Urra in wymia lying sonth pf the O. and M. Eallread MetlBg. ; A aawetiojr of the citizen of YioeaDoeg and Knox county fsvormble to tht bnilding of railroevd on a direct line to Inrlianpolis will be held at the Court House, in Vincenneson Monday the 14th ingt , beine the firtt dar of the Circuit
Court, to Uke inch gtepe in aid of the enterprise as may be thought necessary. The importance of the road to the people of Yincennea, and tbat portion of the county through which it is proposed to build it, cannot be over estimated. We hope tht the interest of our people will be manifested br a geaersl torn ont Vincenna Gatette ' - t Were oar people aware of the (treat importance of securing the White Rirer Valley tradej they would be making some effort to have the old Straight line Road completed to this point, rather: than ait atill and permit a road to be bnOt for the express purpose - of taking trade atmost from their Very doors, 8uch indifference or short sigbtedness Is truly reprehensible.? The day is net far distant when the people wDl regret their want of enterprise and public spirit. But little tact and energy is wanting to build the Straight Line Road and seeure the trade the Indianapolis folks now have tbeir eyes upon. ' We erily believe that the redaction of our marketing consequent upon placing oar city in direct comma; nication with the rich valleys of White liver, would in tbe coarse of a few jears enough to our people to pay for be too sCngnine in this particular, bnt tbat the saving would be very great all must aee. " J" 1)st JJocc 1 here bave been at onr landing within the past few days np less at than four , steamers tbat were under, tbe necessity of being docked. ' Had our people taken bold of tbe dry dock enter prise . wnen nrst their attention was called to the' matter, by this time . they would have been ready, or nearly so, for buaineaa "&The repairs of the steamers mentioned would, in all probability, have amounted to $1,000 each, making in the aggregate one-fourth the first cost of tbe dock.: These steamers have been forced to go to New Albany, Madison, Cincin nati, or Mound City,' and onr city losea not only the cost of their repairs, bnt tbe additional, trade necessarily attaching to an enterprise of this character Yet tbe dry dock project is still in an unsettled condition. Ten or twelve thousand dollars is too heavy an invest ment for onr capitalists, where' there is the , slightest . . risk - to be run f . The investment looks as though it . would pay, but then it might not, and onr money would be gone." We have tried the gro eery and dry goods basiness long enough to know just what to depend on. We are not bo certain about this dry dock affair. Some of, ns may get " docked " tbe full amount of money wepnt in, and that would spoil the profit on a good many goods. ' Reasoning thus, we re fuse to subscribe, and the whole project may faiL ' We are surprised to witness such apathy or timidity. The dock is regarded by everybody as si necessity; then why hesitate to build It and put it in tbe bands of a man, or men, in whom all have confidence.. Every other city in the State just now is laying to a help ing Land in some public enterprise, ex cept . Evansville. She is absolutely doing nothing, and has not the courage to take hold of a little dry dock improve ment We are decidedly circumscribed in our views and public spirit.'. The Balloon Ascension, on Sunday afternoon, grew oat of a bet A Captain Reavis or Rivers, connected lb some way with the' gunbteAt ' service, bet a friend $500 thai he would go up in the balloon. He then went to Mr. Steineerand got the nseof his balloon by paying $50, and Sunday afternoon was fixed upon for tbe ascension. ' ,K'C'S ? An immense crowd was assembled at tbe. Crescent Gardens, the admittance being free. . The -balloen was filled at the gas works and towed from there to the grounds, a distance of over half a mile.; This was done by several strong men holding on to the basket and preventing the balloon from rising too high while others palled it to tbe garden by tbe drag rope. This was something a little new in ballooning, and greatly pleased those witnessing the operation. Rivers received his instructions from Prof... Steiaeer," about managing "'.'.the valves, and abont 5 o'clock stepped into tbe car and went up "kiting." A' good stiff breeze was blowing from the west aod be passed almost directly over the city. It thinks that not less than three or four hundred thousand dollars a year will tbna be lost to the last two named cities, every cent of which might be retained to" their ' trade with a little effort and enterprise. Here is ita latest on this subject , The Gazette is positively cruel !i'ty We learn upon reliable authority that the new convert to the Romish faith wbo in "a fit of pious abstraction carried off the old woman's ax, thinking it was tbe cross, has been horribly profane. ' Some one more enriousthan forebearing," asked this disciple if he really did think the aX was the emblem Of his new faith, and horrible to relate, he told hia inquisitor to go to tbat unknown locality whose climate in intensity of heat is represented to be exceedingly great, and besides invoked on him tbe imprecations of heaven in a blasphemous manner. We do hope the priest will make him do penance for this wickedness. If his father confessor will only deny him' his nsual rations of whi&ky for a week we think it will cure him of blaspheming. If the sin is of sufficient importance to mortify the flesh, if the priest will forbid him the use of whisky, mortification will unquestionably ensue. Not a doubt of it. The punishment would be far greater than to put peas in bis shoes, and make him walk on them, for when ia hia usual condition be would be utterly insensible to the torture of the peas.
