mtn who had been to Memphis and were going to their home in Mississippi, were -met 'eome fifteen or twenty miles from the city by Ja robber, who was moulted. He ordered them to stand and deliver, and much against their will, the blacks had toi dishorns their pocket hooka, whicb, together, contained about nine dollars, When the robber was placing: the money lin his pocket, -the blacks seized the revolver he had presented at them and -at .once began a desperate struggle in which they broke the revolver over the robber's bead aad be sank insensible upon the ground. -The hlaoks heard some one coming, and fearing it was the. robbers accomplice, siezing the horse by the- bridle and holding fast to the revolver tbe j beat a retreat in such haste that they forgot to take their money out of the robber's pocket. They brought the horse and revolver back to Memphis and handed them over to the Provost Marshal They supposed, aa they bad lost their money, the horse would be .given to .them. .When they found put- this .was not tbe case, they walked .out of the Provost Marshal's office, jumped on . tbe horse aod rode away., Subsequently the borse was sold to another black, in whose possession he was found; by tbe owner, a resident of Tipton county, from whom he had been stolen shortly, before the blacks had been robbed on the highway.
