Some complaint Las been made that the hose-reel of the steam fireengine has been closed in and could not I be eot ont readily in case of a fire. We I think, however, there will be no difficulty on that point A Paradise fob Rebel Plasters. An Englishman writes to the London Jndex that those Southern planters' who cannot make up their minds to live in the Union, ought to go to Trinidad, which island, he says, needs only an industrious population to become very rich. That is adding insult to injury, as we can imagine a no more bitter satire on tbe people of the South, especially the rebel planters. The application of the term " industrious" to them is indeed a broad jokr. . Enlarging. We are triad to see that the congregation of tbe Protestant Epis copal Church have gone to work to enlarge their Church edifice. The ne cessity of such a movement is an evi denee of a healthy growth iu that Church, and a compliment to their new Rector: Tbey propose to add twenty-one pewe to the auditorium this season, hut hope in a few years to be able to build a new edifice, commensurate with tbe rapid growth of the city and the progress of the sge. 1 Dbci.INEA Ramnel Rav.irrl nn.itiralv .a .. We are glad to see that some of our citizens are beginning to agitate the subject of taking measures to remove the bar in tbe river opposite the upper part of tbe city. As a sanitary measure alone, it is of the highest importance that it should be done, ( . . . , . .... lmnrnvino' lha lanr1ina at Ihia .! r a -- -- " A wing dam on tbe opposite side of the river above the city will do the work. The highest estimated cost we have heard mentioned is $20,000. We think it can be done for half that sum. Baying Cold Makes One a Rebel. There is instruction and example in the following incident narrated to us by i re nnsyivania inena: An honest Schuylkill County German merchant, who had been prospered and
accumulated more money than he could employ as capital in his business, came to a patriotic banker in Philadelphia and said, " I have got some moneys, and I want you to buy me some gold. " Why, Schultz, what do you want gold for? That is n't a thing you sell in your store." "I knows dat; but I want to make some money on de rise of gold. Beoples say it is going up, and 1 tink I may make a tousand dollars." x - "Schults, you dear old fellow. don't you know that if yon buy gold you will be a rebel?" "Not" said Schultz, with a tone of resentment "Suppose you buy $10,000 of gold. Suppose that some morning you read in the papers, in big letters, ' Terrible Disaster to the Union Cause! Grant's At my Routed and Destroyed 1 The Rebels Marching on Washington!'" "I should say dat was tarn bad news," excitedly interrupted tbe German. " Yes; but wouldn't you say right off, ' Dig, however, will put gold up pad for the Union cause, tarn pad, but it is good for my ten tousand. Don't you see, Schultz, that in buying gold you instantly make the interests of the rebels your interests that you bribe yourself to wish them to succeed, and to wish your country and your countrymen to fail? And if these unholy desires don't define a rebel, Schultz, there is no language to define one. Don't you see that buying gold inevitably turns honest, patriotic, devoted men like you away from tbe cause which they ought to support, and which they think they do support, but which they cannot support, because they have made it their interest not to support it? Don't yon see it, dear old fellow?" " Py taml I do," said the honest man, with gravity of manner and humility; "and I ax pardon of the war. Put de whole of dat in Seven-Thirties. My money goes mit my principles." The Seven-Thirty Notes can be had of the EVANSVILLE NATIONAL BANK, in any amounts and of either dates, viz : August 15; June 15; July 15; at par and accrued interest This loan is nearly exhausted, and it is quite certain that , the notes will be at a premium as soon as it is announced that the loan is H taken. There remains about $50,000,000, and a few more weeks will absorb the whole amount of this popular and only loan offered to the public. .
