Wtacoxda Bcbxed. About midnight of Thursday last the steamer Wyacooda, while descending the Mississippi two miles blow St. Genevieve, took fire, as it supposed, by the breaking cr explosion of a coal oil lamp. The porter, who wag on watch, imme diately gave the alarm by crying i'FiiTL bursting open state-room doora, and in some cases dragging tha occopanta from their berths. . In a few minnUs the cabin was in a sheet of flame, and the boat was run ashore, the pilot, Captain Joseph Snodgrass, and engineer, Mr. Hardy, stand ing" heroically to their poets. All on board were saved except the porter, James McGue, who unfortunately jumped into, the river instead of Oa the hank, and ' was drowned. Captain Langdon, of the Wyaconda, and the pilot, John Bays, received high praise from the pas sengers for the coolness asd energy dis played in caving the passengers and crew. c . . . . The boat floated down the river and sunk out of sight in the main channel, some three miles below St. Genevieve, and her cargo is, of course, a total loss. The passengers and crew of the Wyaconda were taken to St. Loui on the Countess. Recobdeb's Codbt. Recorder Nelson's levee was pretty well attended yesterday morning. One or two cases of plain drunk" were disposed of by inflicting nominal fines. Barney Cooper, for forestalling the market, which he probably deemedwas ruling too low, was fined one dollar and costs, '.his being his first offence. John Dougherty, for assault and battery, with intent to rob, was required te deposit an X and condiments with the Recorder, which John declined, for the reason that he did n't have it about his clothes. He now boards and lodges at the Hotel de Long, on Third Street, under the shadow of the Halls of Justice. THE TRIAL OF CHAMP FERGUSON. -- The trial of Champ Ferguson, the most diabolical of all the murderers, perhaps, produced by the rebellion, commenced in Nashville on Wednesday last. The Commission trying him consists of Major Colin Ford, 100th U. S. C. I; Captain E. C Hatton, A. A. G. Volunteers; Captain Thomas H. Osborn, 4th Ohio volunteer cavalry; Second Lieut William O. Bateman, 7th Pennsylvania volunteer cavalry; Second Lieut. E. P. Lieter, 15th Ohio volunteer infantry; Captain C. Blackman, 42d U. S. C. L, Judge Advocate. Judge Guild is counsel for the defendant. Personal Ex-Governor Dunning, of Bloomington, Hon. A. Hendricks, of South Bend, and Hon. Alfred Kilgore, of Muncie, the Committee to audit military claims against the State, accompanied by Capt O. M. Wilson, oi Indianapolis, Secretary of the Committee, were in the city, stopping at-the Sherwood House, except Gov. Donning, who,' having a private claim of his own to urge, stopped np town. The Committee arrived here on Saturday night and pro ceeded on Sunday to Cannelton, finish ed their business there, and returned to tve city last night. To-day they go to Princeton. leaf The Government has seat offi cials to Andersonville, Ga, to make spe cial invest:gations into the brutal and inhuman treatment of Union prisoners during tbe war, witb a view ot bringing to trial before a military commission the rebels who had charge of our soldiers wben tbe barbarous treatment was practiced. Some of the guilty parties are already in the custody of the Government Telegraph. - ' We hope the Government will not confine its investigations simply to the rebel soldiers who had charge of those prisoners. It is hardly fair to punish a subordinate for executing the orders of his superior, and let the superior go free. Try the subordinate, and if it is ascertained, during the trial, that our boys were murdered by orders from tbe rebel Government, through Robert E. Lee, the rebel commander-in-chief, let those officials be likewise called to a rigid account The blood of our ' mur dered boys cries aloud that justice be meted out to their murderers. - - Mas. Scbbatt. The TWoune's Wash ington special says: "When about to rise from her chair for tbe purpose of being pinioned, Airs. Surratt inquired of ber spiritual adviser what ahe should say on the scaffold, and upon being nswered. Obi nothing; what do you desire to say?' replied: 'I am innocent' Mrs. DtiUijlas, widow of tbe late Sena tor, made two personal attempts to ob tain from the President a reprieve from the President for Mrs. Surratt, but in each case was denied. V ery bitter feeling in relation to ber execution exists among the qoandum rebels, and especially among the Catholics of the city, wbo, it is rumored, intend to call meetings for the purpose of denouncing tbe action of the Military Commission and the President" The various false rumors put in cir culation to create sympathy with the leading spirit of the assassins, are being one by one exploded, and all the sympa thy indulged in will be by those wbo at heart rejoiced in the consummation of the infernal plot -I2?''There has been quite a fatting otf in tbe number ot persons visiting tbe city within the past few days. They are principally military personages who now Stop at "first class hotels" and pay $3 50 per day for the luxury. Were it not for the little life imported by the soldiers, Indianapolis would be decidedly dull at present State sentinel. What will become of your city when the " little life imported by the soldiers is withdrawn, as it soon will be? EThe Mobile (Ala) Tribune coofessea the sins of the South thus: " We have sinned aga:nst the piogre:S of the age. No man can deny this; and yet we have done it with a conscientious ness which ought to provoke the com passion or inoae on whose mercy wa must rely. We are aa good as they.
