Tbb Wheat C sop. We nAva been st
some pains to ascertain the condition of the wheat crop in this part
of the country, and regret that" we cannot make a more favorable report. We hare heard of no instance where farmers hate realized their expectations. Prior to reaping tbeirwheat many of them entertained hopes that they would obtain-a fair yield. Some ef them, in deed b0Mted that they wonM tum out more" wheat -to the acre than they bad done for many Tears But when the found to be in .!,. , a,MC " - viaa, niogt instances an entire - failure, and the farmers regretted naving put renpers into tne new at an. . . - a . It Fields that were expected to produce a crop of from twenty to twenty-five bushels to the sere have produced absolutely nothing worth epeakiiig; of. The peculiar kind of blight that baV thus destroyed the heat croD we are unable to describe. ... 3 1. . In all the counties adjoining our own we have the same story no wheat; crop a failure. This is most unfortunate, as a large breadth of ground bad been sown, and much money bad been in vested in new reapers and threshers. Oar larmers were anticipating a large Southern demand for their staple, and were congrstulatin'g themselves on their supposed ability to .be equal to the emergency. This faiiure of the wheat crop will be severely flt, too. in all departments of trade, because on that crop many of them depend almost entirely for success. Our shipping interests rill, also, feel the loss of the freight usually furnished it by this commodity, which, it was hoped, would be this year in excess sf former seasons. Octeaosocs. The Raleigh (N. C.) Progrett states , that on Saturday, the 8ih, no less tbaa twenty negroes were robbed in the streets of that city. The cases occurred principally in Fayetteville street. The manner of doing this work ia impodent, if fc . not original. It is egro with a new hat, parcel of dry goods, or other desirables, the evil doers snatch them from their possessors and coolly walk off with the unfortunate s property. Tbe Progrtts ought to tell who did the robbing. We presume it was done by the chivalry. , Fbee Labob in Rutherford Couktt, Tekkesseb. A gentleman who employs a larse number of negroes on a cotton farm in Rutherford county informed the ed;tor 0f the Nashville Times, the other far that be found no difficulty in get tino- hi hanrls to work repnlarlv. We are glad to see that workmen have broken ground for the continuance of the Locust street sewer, It will be recollected that it was stopped last year at Second street , It is now, we believe, proposed to continue it to tbe canal or beyond. In the meanwhile we hope the gutters between the cross streets will be regraded. Casualties in Company H, G5th In diana We are indebted to Capt. Horn brook, for sn official statement of the casualties in Company II, 65th Indiana Volanteers, of which be was Captain From this statement it will be seen the deaths in battle, rebel prisons by starva tion, from accident and disease, have been 33, and 15 were - wounded, about one half of the original number of men enlisted originally. The 65th regiment has distinguished itself as a fighting regiment,' and no company did more faithful or hard duty than Company B. Steamboat Wore The foreman of the Journal Bindery showed us a new cabin ' register for the big Superior' I which we think is one-of the finest jobs ever turned out, and we nave bad some experience in blank books. Harry Barker knows just how to do it, and tbe Journal Bindery and Job Office cannot I be beaten on steamboat work or any j other job work. A WotaD of Warmng, We desire very earnestly to say to the friends of tbe old man who was looking for us yesterday with a slung-shot in his pocket, and who abused another citizen until he placed bis life in jeopardy, that they had better keep him at home until be becomes sane. 'We do not propose to take any risks from any one, aud if ar y one assaults us, whether he be drunk or sober, it shall not be our tault if tbere is not a funeral in the family. We never seek any quarrels; we never turn aside to avoid them. ' " - - Ua?"
