This was the only serious fieht the infantry forces had on the route. 1 SaD News. We reeret to learn that belt has been rtceived in this city that Mrs. Jamey Van Riper, well known to many of oar citizens as en excellent and amiable lady, died in New York on Saturday morning. iter husband naa been for the last three years an attache of the Western branch of the bouse of Fatman & Co., the great tobacco factors. - Wasbisgton and Lincoln. One of the prettiest concrp ions that ever en tared the brain of an attest, we think, is aa engraving we saw the other day in the show window of Warren & Couyng ton, on Main Street. It is the reception of Lincoln in the heavens by Washing, ton, and tbe latter about to crown him with a chaplet of evergreens. It was tbe conception of a poet as well as a genius. Run A way. We saw a beer wagon 'attached to two grey horses, running away on Saturday morning. It started on the leveo and ran up to Water street, and proceeded down that, and wfuld have"'brought up" against a wagon in front of Hornbrook's store, had not a number of men by violent gesticulations tamed jhe horses out into the street again, the wagon of .course following Proceeding down Water atreet,tLe wagon turned into Sycamore street and disappeared. B ., After a brief absence we noticed the wagon, with a man ia it, traversing the vybarf, following tbe hones. It is tenera!y supposed that tbe wagon would not have run 'away if the horses had stood still, aod we concur in the opinion.
OHDAT-
ur KaHnfsctnrin? and jfechanlcal Interests. Meetings have been held at one time tnd another, and speeches made, and articles published in the papers, in the ity of Evansville, to urge the necessity f increasing oar railroad facilities, and -attending oar commercial enterprises, tnd opening up new fields for our river lavigators, and enlarging ?ur hotel accommodations, and improving onr wharves and streets, and providing better roads for communication with the interior and with neighboring towns. All these pfans have been advocated in order to benefit tbe city and to insure its cootinned growth and prosperity. It is well that public attention has been called in the ways specified to the subjects above-mentioned, for by so doing several laudable and profitable enterprises have been inaugurated and rendered the means of remunerating the projectors and adding to the wealth and importance of Evansville. People are apt to become absorbed in they- private concerns to the utter neglect of tbe pub
lic weal, unless reminded by others of their duties to society. There is oce large and vital interest in the city that is not likely to die of neglect, but which can be greatly strengthened by home encouragement, .1 w ta - ana wmco, mus sirengwenea ana vivified with exuberant health, is capablaj of adding immensely to the prosperity of the community and of every member thereof. We allude to tbe manufacturing and mechanical interest. Encourage it, and it will repay aa hundred fold in solid wealth and comfort Neglect it, and the public will suffer from tbe bad effects, in common with the numerous persons directly connected with this class of business. : ' If Evansville depends entirely for her welfare upon tbe mercantile and commercial interests, she may succeed in becoming a first-class city, and she may not- Her future overshadowiag importance will depend very much upon the degree of rivalry npon the part of other commercial points, and the openin up of routes of travel diverting tbe trade legitimately belooging to her into other channels. Bat if she leans as well upon her manufacturing and , mechanical interests as upon the aforesaid, her eminence amongst sister cities is assured, and her " controlling power in this region of country only a question of time and public spirit and private enterprise. Few places have better advantages in tbe manufacturing and mechanical way than Evansville. She is located right in the midst of a region rich in coal, minerals, and timber, where all the great agricultural staples can easily be raised, and where there is good reason to believe that petroleum exists in large quantities. She is situated so that her manufactories and mechanical establishments can get water and fuel in abundance to furnish steam for motive power. There is nothing to prevent this city from being the great manufacturing center of the region of country between LouTsville and Cairo, Chicago and Nashtille, if our citizens only realize the necessity of giving aid and encour agement to our manufacturers and me chanics. These we have who are enterprisingt energetic, intelligent, and skillful in their respective branches of labor. We have both the personnel and the materiel to enable onr city to hold her own with those that are most favored. As good work can be turned out here in any given line as can be found anywhere in this country. Nearly all kinds of mechanical crafts are carried on here, on a large or small scale. Steamboat work, agricultural implements, plows, axes, spokes, bubs, and felloe, wagons ' and carriages, mill machinery, tin-ware, brass aod copper work, bnilding materials, cabinet and carpenter work, chairs and furniture, marble and atone work, bricks, boots and shoes, hats and caps, confectioneries, : clothing, saddles, bridles, and harness, trunks and valises, stoves aad hollow wars and other cast-iron articles, lumber, staves and laths, tight and slack barrels and tanks, railroad machinery, iron and steel work, cigars and manufactured tobaco, wrapping paper, gas fixtures, dental fittings, medicinal compounds, woolen fabrics, carpets, the product of the dyer's skill, millinery and mantnamakers' handiwork, guns and pistols and their apparatus, mattresses and bed coverings, iron railings and other wrought iron work, printers' and bookbinders' work, soap and candles, beer, ale, and wine, photographs, stone and earthern ware, iron safes, roofing, bread, cakes, and crackers all these products of mt nufacturing and mechanical skill, and more that we cannot specify, are turned out now in Evansville, and the , quantities of each can be vastly increased and new kinds added to the list from time to time, if employers and employees will harmoniously co-operate, if banks and moneyed men will strengthen labor with capital, and if our citizens will fully appreciate tbe importance of the above mentioned interest and give it all the aid and encouragement in their power. . Commerce alone can and has built up cities, and it might possibly do the same for Evansville. . But it cannot be implicitly depended on alone. Bnt join Manufactures with Commerce in this place, foster and enconrage both, and Evansville can hardly fail to be a large city. Her position and facilities point to that result - Manufactures have built up cities, and now form the chief reliance in sustaining many in this country, and especially in foreign countries. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Newark, N. J., Troy, N. Y., Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbue, Dayton, and Zanesville, O., Richmond, Madison, and New Albany, Indiana, and other places, and nnmerous towns in New England, find manufactures to be their life-blood. Evansville may have the same experience. Evansville ought to cherish her mechanics as the apple of her eye, and extend to them all due encouragement Thsy are tba bona and sinew of a city
as the fanners are of the country at larg As the persons connected with onr manufacturing establishments aod mechanical shops prosper, so will the city prosper: as they suffer, so will she suffer. Evansville will find her best interests dependent on their welfare. Siscclab Accidest. JL little daughter of Mr. Collet, liv'mg on Second Street, was aroused front her sleep on Friday night by the rattling of a vehicle in the street, aad, jumping out of bed, started across the floor to her mother, when she fell on the floor, dislocating the elbow and splintering tbe bone. - A DisaosEsr Clebe IIeavt Robbeet. II. U. Hunter, of South Bend, led. , on Friday night, 30th nit, robbed the safe- of Cart J. II. Wilson, A. Q M. of Paducah, of $17,510. Lie was the cashier in the office, and deposited the money with a citizen, 'who, either from fright or some oiber cause,' upon tbe public announcement of the robbery, divulged tbe whole thing and. gave- the money over to Col. Syoaes, commander of the post. Hunter is in the military prison, and it is thought that he' will get his case turned over to the civil authorities, and finally be acquitted on the plea of insanity.
