The day was ushered in by a grand national salute of artillery, and at an early hour Assistant Marshals of the day were dashing through the streets ia search of a procession, which search proved nearly in vain. The, soldiers and the citizen natorallv felt tbat marching through a broiling sun for a mile and a half would be rather exhaust- ! "ercise an respectfully declined entering tbe procession. Had it not been for tbe Turners and tbe Triumphal Crr and Band waoo, there would have been no procession at all; but with these a procession was formed and marched to the grove under the command of the Chief Marshal and his several Assistants, flanked by two unorganized and anmarshaled processions of "men, women and children, numbering several thousand. . The city had been very elaborately decorated with flags, banners, evergreens and national colors, variously blended. Jiere and there portraits of the brave ofbeers of the army and the late President of tbe United States. Amon the most; handsomely decorated buildJKi.TL- ""' m.n.li?n Jhe fronts of the stores occupied by Lowentball & Co., and Peter Semonin. Two vast triangles Dienaetl together, formed of the nation
al colors, extended from the cornice to the base of tbe second story. In tb
center under tbe cornice ia a chsplet o' -verzreens were the words "Washington, 1776;" below to the right and left, in like chapleta, wire the names "Grant nd Sherman." At the top of tbe eecond story, in tbe center, was tbe sentiment: "The Union " forever, and the French must leave Mexico." Between tbe seconed story windows to tbe right and left were the names "Sheridan and Thomas," and in the center, at the base of the second story, "Lincoln, 1865." Schapker & Bussing's large front was almost covered with flags, one large and twenty-nine small flags being employed in the decoration. The Washington House and the Crescent City Billiard Hall were also elaborately decorated with flags, and tbe windows of the latter were lined with tissue paper of red, white and blue, in preparation for. the illumination at nigbt the interior of the Adams Express office was handsomely decorated with flags, and presented a very attractive aspect. The St, Charles Saloon was covered with flags, and several large banners and flags were suspended ever First and Main streets. But the great center of attraction on Main street was. the graud triumphal arch at tbe crossing of Third street. The structure consisted of one grand arch with a small arch on each side, all supported by . four massive, pillars of Doric finish. The grand arch was sur mounted by a handsome golden eagle half plumed for flight Oo a broad sign formicg the capital of the arch, on the aide fronting the river, was inscribed LIBERTY '.ND UNION. 1 1776. X - 1865. Below, on tbe left and right, in chaplets of evergreen, were the names: Grant Sherman. On tbe periphery of tbe arch was the undying declaration of the imraortalJackson: "Qar Federal Unron it Must be Preserved." On the chapiters of tbe smaller arches . were tbe names, Dopont, Dablgren, Meade, Hooker, Veatch, and Palmer, and on the periphery of the small arches were the mottoes: "Freedom . and Union," "Iodependence.il On the obverse side of these arches we have: "Welcome, Soldiers, Wel come;" "Burnside;" 'Harrison;'"The Union Powerful- at Home, Respected Abroad;' "Oar Country Honors You;'.' ' FABAGUT. POBTBB. "Hail Columbia, Happy Land." In niches in tho center columns were busts in bronze of Clay and Webster, and on tbe sides portraits of Gen, Grant The whole wa, finished and decorated with flags, escutcheons, stars, etc., dec, in tbe most exqusite style, and looked a;emely handsome. "On Third Street the jail building, the" Union office, Peter Burk s and Wanseid ler s saloons were decorated with flags, and the Union -office with the addition of wrea'hs of oak leaves.. The high fence, enclosing tbe grounds, immediately .below the ZTnt'cn office was gor geously decorated by the! Turners with wreaths and . festoons of oak leaves, flags, mottoes, Ac, Ao. Across tbe top of the gateway were: ' WA8HnGTOS.! " 1776." - " LINCOLN. "1865." Then two mottoes in German, which we translate as follows ! " United we are Strong." " Fresh,, Frolicsome, Free," There were other very handsome decorations in different parts of the city, but we have not time to describe them, bat mast follow the procession to tbe Ores cent City Springs, which we were enabled to do through the characteristic kindness and courtesy of a mnch esteemed and excellent friend.," When we reached the grove we found a vast, concourse, of people, and every moment added to the number. We shall not attempt to estimate the number, but have heard St estimated at from 5,000 te 12,000. '-'v-'vi. The grounds were very handsomely and taste,' ally decorated. Tbe main stand was large and elegantly arranged On the front were 'the mottoes: "United we etand," "In. God we trust," "Victory is ours," with flags, spangles, &, && In front of the Stand were displayed tbe battle flagslof the 24tb, 2otb, 42d regiments and of the 1st Indiana caval ry, stained "with" the T)eafthgsr"of many storms and riddled with ballets. On an arch between., htrf and ha tables was the inscription: "Our Flag is there. Attached tothetrees over the grounds were small flags of various colors bear ing each ' the nam of a battle for tbe Union. There were Gettysburg, Jones boro, Kearsarge, Corinth, Chattanooga, Fort Donelson Five Points, Pea Ridge, Perryville, Majvexn Hill, Fort Fwber, Cold Harbor, Kenesaw, Stone river, Magnolia Hill, Champion Hill, Memphis, Rioggold, Culpepper, Shilob, Fort Henry, Rappahannock,-Draneeville, Columbus, Island No. 10, White Oak Swamp, Vicksbnrg, Eaoxville, Mobile, av r il r -. - - .nr-i - - gemots, marietta, vYiimmgioo, Murfreeaboro, Savannah, Fort Wagner, Aattietam, Richmond, Fredericksburg.Sumter, Port Hudson,- Port Royal, Brandy Station, Lookout Maunta'n, Wilderness, Mississippi River, Helena, Nashville,' Winchester, New Orleans, Falling Water, Newbern, Eaton Rouge, Shenandoah Valley, South Mountain, Cedar Crttk Atlanta, Petersburg, Charleston, and perhaps others, hut numbers we noticed were omitted. The programme, published ia the Journal of Tuesday morning, was car ried out with the exception that Gen. Shackelford was unable to finish his speech, and Kev. W. H. McCarer pro nounced tbe benediction. Rev. Spald ing read the Declaration in a clear and impressive manner, and, the music by the Choir and by the Crescent City Sil ver Band was really inspiring. The oration by Gen. Shackelford was very able and eloquent. The theme was the rise and fall of nations, but unhap pily when a little more than half done speaking, the General became so faint from previous illness and the oppressive nature of the weather that he was on able to proceed, and had to be taken home and a physician called in.
This greatly marred tha pleasure of he day, and greatly disappointed tbe arge audience who were eagerly and ith deep interest listening to the discourse. - - -After the exercises at the stand were oce through witb, dinner" was an
nounced, and soon the eleven long tables were full, and a fine substantial meal partaken of by thousand ..Others had taken their own dinners for tbe convenience of their children, and spread them beneath the shade. . . ' . The crowd was so great, and tbe day so oppressive, 'tbat tne large supply ot water was' early exhausted, and much complaint of thirst was made. Messrf. Damron, and their helps, did alt they could to supply '.he want, but their cis terns were soon exhausted also, and in fact the vast supplies of all things prepared for the occasion were used up long before night. Alter dinner, the crowds of people wandered through tbe grounds admiring the great change that has been made on this attractive place, and many were the eulogies we heard passed upon the good taste and energy cf the lessees. Tbe great attraction of the day waa the grand triumphal car, wbich was really beautiful and rendered still more so by the three dozen ' young ladies, se lected to represent the various States, Tbe car was made by placing a large platform on a wagon, with seats arranged in the form of an ellipse, allowing the young damsels to sit facing outward. In the center was a raised platform, on which stood, leaning on a pedestal, a handsome young lady representing the Goddess of Liberty. .Tbe covering- of the car terminated in a beautiful canopy, composed of, red, white and blue mosr tin, and handsomely decorated with. ever i greens, flags,, spangles, &c , 4c. A w'de muslin curtain surrounded thebasfclbe platform, near y concealing the wagon beneath, on which were the following inscriptions, " What God has Joined together let not man , put asunder.' " Distinct as the billows, but one as tbe sea." "Free, United, Independent" This car was drawn by six noble horses, bandied with Coosumate 'skill . by' tbe driver." 't -; e: j utiui.-'; e. All the young ladies were dressed ia white except one, who, having; lost a father and a brother in the war for the Union, was very properly arrayed ia mourning, forming a melancholy contrast with tbe wbite dresses of the others, highly emblematic of the mourning hearts all over the land mourning" tot the loved ' ones laid on tbe altar of oor preserved country. - Each young lady wore - a white ribbon on which was Inscribed the name of some State and bore in her hand a small flag..v.The general verdict' was that this wi tbe great feature of the celebration. ' 'At night roany 'hodses.' were ill unu nited, but we have not room tO particu larize,, but cannot' forego mentioning Chandler's Block," which ,: .was , fairly shrouded with Chinese lanterns, ; i . i Thousands of people congregate) B Water street to witness the fire works. A model barge was anchored in the river. on which to make tbe display, and tba crowd seemed much pleased with the display. Some portions of it wese very handsome. "While this was going cn the Crescent ' City Band made glorious music on tbe roof of the building on the corner of Main and Water - Streets, and Young America tip town was having a glorification with shooting-crackers, bonfires, &&, -4c .'. .-.'"' it. . '. Neither at the Crescent City Springs 'nor In the city, so far as we have learned, were there any difficulties during tba day. We never saw such excellent order where so many people were assembled. Everybody, byU mutual tacit agreement, closed theic business hoases until night jvithout any proclamation from the Mayor or request from tbe Committee of Arrangements. Altogether it was a success, aud but for the intense heat it would have beet) a tremendous success. -. . .,,.a !r THC T DBS KM CcLEB RATIOS. Mr. C. has been in tbe service twentytwo months, and received honorable mention on frequiQt occasions, from the commanding officers. He led the Red river expedition nnder Rear Admiral Porter, last year on Fort Hindman, and was also in the Yazoo and Onachita ex. peditions. '.He piloted the Uniud State steamer Gazelle, .No. -50, tbe boat to which Buckner and Price gave them selves up, ' wbeu the .surrender took place west of the Mississippi river,. Al though in several hot engagements Coll came oat all right . He is efficient in almost any ..position of life , circum stances may ' place him, and is also a most estimable and social gentleman.
