Tho Qaartermaster'a Department at Indianapolis id settling np its affairs by paying off in Seten-thirty bonds fjood enough for anybody. Nothing is mora sign.ficant of return ing peace to our war-worn and blood tamed land than the abolition of the pass system between Louisville and Nashville. Military is fast giving way to the civil law. Camp Morton, at Indianapolis, is being rapidly depopulated, nearly all the prisoners confined there having expressed a desire to take theoatb of allegiance and return to their former homea. A suggestion has been made to change the name of the "Central Paik," in New York, to "Lincoln E'ark," in honor of the late President. Major General John A. Logan's 15th corps has made the most remarkable march on record. After leaving Raleigh the corps marched one hundred and fifty-five miles in five and a half days, bridging three large streams the Neuse, the Jtoanoke and the Nottaway. The Louisville Democrat prints a eulogistic communication in favor of one Malone, a guerrilla or officer in the rebel army. It says it does so "at the request of many personal friends of Malone, who, though differing with him in poli tict, wish to do him this justice." The Democrat evidently desires treason to be regarded only as a difference in politics. The Ml Vernon people are again agi tating tha question of constructing ss telegraph line from this city to their town. The expense is placed at $3,000. The advantages to be derived from it are. regarded as invaluable. .Such a ne, if well kept up, will be of great service to tne business men of both places. We trust it may be constructed during the coming summer. There is poetic justice in the fact that the very rebel telegraph lines over which Davis ordered Beauregard to open fire on Fort Sumter, are now nsed to trans mit the Proclamation of President Jubnson offering a reward for the arch trait or's arrest, and if he is caught, it will be maiuly through the instrumentality of those telegraph lines. Colonel Eli S. Parker, Aid da Camp and Private Secretary of General Grant, s an Indiau of the purest blood of the roquis, and is at present Head Chief of the Six Nations, lie is a finely educated man, of rare social qualities, and very highly esteemed by his hosts of friends. As a Civil Engineer he has held high positions on the public works of New York, and under the Federal Goverument Prior to the outbreak of the war, he was in Government employ at Galena and Dubuque, superintending the erection of a post office, hospital, and custom houses at these places. There he. formed the acquaintance of Genera Graut, who, during the war, has had him constantly on his personal staff. One cent's worth of stout wire, bent in the shape of a letter U, is a very good protection against burglars. Hang the curved part of the wire on the door knob, and let the two extremities pass through the bow of the key after the door is locked. Then the burglars may rage in vain, unless they break the door down. Many of our citizens have had their houses entered by means of "outsiders," and robbed. The use of the above simple precaution may prevent similar occurrences in the future. Tha remedy is so simple every one will justified in trying it. The Chattanooga Gazelle learns that the Government intends to vacate one of the large buildings on Lookout Mountain, which has been in use for some time as a hospital, and parties are making preparations to open it as a hotel Such a place of resort would be highly appreciated by the residents during the coming summer, and will no doubt prove remunerative. The rebel General Ewell has written a letter to Lieut Gen. Grant, expressing his horror and indignation at the assassination of President Lincoln. He says, of all the misfortunes which could befall the Southern people, or any Southern man, by far tha greatest in his judgment would be tha idea that they could entertain any other than feelings of unqualified abhorrence and indignation fr the assassination of the President of tha United States end tha attempt to assassinate the Secretary of State. No language could adequately express tha shock produced upon himself, in common with all the general officers confined at Fortress Monroe with him, by tha occurrence of this appalling crime, and by the seeming tendency in tha public mind to connect Southarn men with it.
Mi O
laropeao Sjmpsthj. There ess be no mistake that our Government and people have the sym - patby of Europeans at last The base assassination of our honored and loved President has drawn all hearts to us. throughout Europe, and words of sympa tby and condolence greet ns from every f quarter. Intense horror and indignation were manifested by all classes on the reception of the astonishing news from America, and throughout England pnblic tqeetings were called to give ex. pression to the feelings of the people. In France, too, the most intense excitement prevailed, and the rebel agents fait the necessity of making haste to dinavow all knowledge of or sympathy with the dastardly act, and to disavow- for th Southern Confedesaey, all responsibility for the murder of our President These individuals will, doubtless, realize that their defense of the rebel authorities was ptemature, whim they read President Johnson's Proclamation for the arrest of JefT. Davis, and other leading rebels, because of their participation in the murderous enterprise. -It was Mr. Lincoln's good fortune to impress all classes and nations with thei idea that his honesty was above suspicion, while his natural simplicity- and kindness of heart won the love of all. That a man whose only failing was kindness of heart should ba brutally murdered in the very hour in which be was meditating schemes of mercy for the deluded people of the Southern States appears so horrible that words are inade quate to portray the crime in all its magnitude and atrocity. The expressions of sympathy from England and Franca at our great mis fortune must have a tendency to soften the bitterness of feeling between our people and those Governments, growing out of the great struggle through which we have passed. Even enemies cease to be such while weeping over tba bier of a mutual friend. Tha English people regarded Mr. Lincoln as their friend. ; Even in Liverpool, the headquarters of rebel agents and sympathizers, the manifesta tions of grief, on the reception of the news of . his assassination, were as solemn and affectine as anv " ar itnessed in this country. More so, per. haps, when the different circumstances surrounding the two peoples are taken into consideration. The great Peace Maker of Judea pro nounced blessings npon all peace makers in all ages af the: world, and it woull seem that the choicest of those blessings must rest upon Mr. Lincoln. Ia life, his great aim was to harmonize warring factions, and reconcile jarring interest's. In death, his blood seems to strengthen the chords of brotherly love and strongly knit together hearts that have long been alienated. Cut off in the midst of his usefulness, bis example will never die, but, perhaps, even mora than the memory of Washington, will inspire tha hearts of the poor through alt time. Dkolikc iw Coal and Bcxr The withdrawal of the Government from tha market as a consumer is having a ten dency to bring down prices tf different articles materially. In New York "the purchases of coal have been reduced from teb thousand tons a day to nice thousand tons a week. Correspondingly j reduced purchases have been madam tha West.' Tha effect baa been to ereaf ly unsettle the coal market And reduce prices. e Tha beef market is also beginning to feel the effects of tha withdrawal of Gov ernment patronage. Tba Boston Journal of Friday last says : It will be seen by the reports of tba cattle markets the present week f hat 'the decline in prices has at last reached the beef market and there is a prospect that we shall soon be able to get a good steak without paying forty-five or fifty cents a pound tor it Both at Cambridge and Brighton there were a Urge number of cattle left over this week. Cattle for hich seventeen cents - a pound was confidently expected were sold at fourteen, and butchers bought very shy even at this decline. The reduction, of the army will take tha Government out of tba market as a purchaser, and lower prices still may be expected. 1 ? Tub Widow's Testimonial.
