Businesa baa been resumed to tout extent in tbia city, but everywhere the emblem or monrninz ai aull risi ble, and tbere aeemato be no disposition oo the part of any on to remove the aable from their dwelling or businesa bouse. A Good Improtemcmt. We notice that a rast improvement baa beeo mad in the Auditor' office, by having it en larged, taking in the ipac formerly used as a passage into the jail yard, thereby making it roomy and comfort able. Mr. Auditor Uisch bas not got room not only to do bis work, and Hie away his papers and recorda, but to entertain tiis friends in a pleasant and comforta ble manner. Thanes. We are indebted to the oflic rs ot tbe magnincent itutu, and tne big Missouri, for full files of New Orleans papers of the IStb, delivered early yesterday morning; to Ed. IL Judge, the princely clerk of the Liberty No. 2, for Memphis papers of Saturday, and to tbe officers of the Morning Star, and Little Grey Eagle, for latest Louisville papers. We are under daily obligations to Joe Davis and Mr. Uoagland, the accommo dating messengers of tbe Adams hxpresa Co., for eastern papers. The Huoe Tbadb. The Haverhill (Mass.) Gazelle says the shoe business is comparatively at a stand still. Man ufacturers are discharging many of their men, and until there id some stability not mnny goods will be manufactured. Capture oe a Steamer. A ocean steamer called the Mattee was captured a few days since at Sunnyside, Miss., by eight guerrillas, who took eight thousand dollars worth of goods, robbed all on board of tbeir watches and money, and then let tbe boat go and permitted the bands to come up to this place. gUaJT" Geueral Warren, who was removed from tbe command of the Fifth corps during tbe pursuit of Lee, has demanded a Court of Inquiry. Returned Home. liinton Rowan Helper, author of the so-called " Helper Book," which created so much excitement in Congress during Buchanan's a Iminigtratiou, has returned to his former home in North Carolina. He was banished from that State originally by Governor Stanley. A Coincidence. The Dayton (Ohio) Jovrnal notices tbat it was on tbe 15th day of April, 1S61, that President Lincoln called out the 75,000 volunteers after the attack on Fort Sumter. Four years after that, on tbe 15th day of April, 1865, ha died. Rebel Brutality. A cotemporary says Mr. Lincoln's first four years' ex perience as President were marked with horrible instances of rebel brutality. A month and a half of his second teim eclipsed them all Sport iv Mexico. Geo. Miraman's eldest child, a boy of five or six years old, was spirited away by some men, whilst walking with a female servant in the street, in the city of Mexico. Two of them held tbe servant while the other two put the child in the carriage. The daughter of a Colonel of artillery was taken oat of her father's house by force, a few days previously. tHon. Montgomery Blair, late Postmaster General, announces through the St. Louis papers that be has return ed to the practice of law. He limits his sphere of business to tbe General Land Office, the Court of Claims and Supreme Court. Godet for Mat. John H. Scott, No. 8, Second Street, has Godey for May; also Harper s Magazine, in great num bers. Free Trade. We trust that the day is not far distaut when the taxes and burdens which o seriously embarrass our trade will be removed. We desire and would bave absolute free trade with the loyal citi zens of the North. The Government tax on importations into Memphis, is a serious imposition on our mercantile pursuits. Our merchant are required to pay all the Government tax which is exacted elsewhere, aud in addition an enormous burden of three per cent upon tbe gross amount of supplies brought here. The present policy seems to have beeu devised in an exceedingly illiberal spirit It started out on tbe assumption that tbe people in tbe rebellious districts had no. rights except to be made to bear burdens, and in no other way could be reached by taxation; but soon the officer of Government cam olouir, and began to collect here as else where, whatever tbe Government exacted, in the shape of taxes on incomes, salaries. Ac. We claim, tnereiore, aa a matter of justice and right, our people should no longer be required to bear burdens tbat are grievous and unjust Met.iphu Bulletin. We do not clearly understand the cause of this imposition on the business of Memphis. We understand that Tsnnessee is a loyal State, regularly organized in the Union, and we can see no propriety in burdening her people with extra taxes,
unless great discrimination is made against rebel sympathizers. We understand that tbere is a tax imposed on all cotton and other products of the State coming into lb city. We
hf ard of one case of a farmer from the it-terior bringing in a bale of cotton to procure supplies, and, after selling big cotton, was compelled to borrow $21 to pay taxes, permits, 4c, in addition to the amount received for hi cotton. This may", be an exceptional case. Sanitary fair at Chicago. A great Sanitary Fair is to be opened in the city of Chicago, on May 30tb, 1H65, to which all the public schools of the North-west are invited to contribute. Tbe Executive Committee, having it in charge, bave determined to open a Pub lic school Department, in which no articles shall be exhibited except such as are contributed by school children or their teachers Tbe Committee say: "Any article of tbe most trining value tbat comes from tbe willing band of a warm-hearted child, will be welcome. Let each child devise something that will be attractive, and it will meet with ready sale. Let each child contribute ten cents, and tbe aggregate will be no trifle. As it is generally roped thai the war is nearly over, it may be thought that fur ther Sanitary contribution are needless. Not so. 1 here are wounded and suner ing soldiers enough now in our hospitals who bave dared danger in our late victo rious armies to need and deserve all that tbe Fair can realize. Tbe Trustees of our public schools, at a meeting recently held, resolved to ac cept contribution, either of money or articles, from pupils, and to donate, from their own salaries, one day's pay. As School Examiner, I invite the schools of the county, both public and private, to contribute, and I will forward their donations, designating the schools from whieh they come. All contributions should be handed in before the 20th of May. J. W. KIOHT Death or in Honored L?aaon. Francis King, Esq., an old and much beloved Mason, died at Indianapolis on Friday alternoon last, about 1 o'clock, after a lingering illness of months. "Uncle Frank," as he was familiarly called, was loved by all who knew bim. Pure in heart and child-like in simplicity, scrupulously conscientious in all the relations of life, he won the hearts of all with whom be came in contact Tbe Indianapolis Journal of Saturday, gives. the following brif sketch of his illness and death: Mr. King had been failiog in health for two years past. Since tbe 7th of January last be bad been confined to bis house, and much of the time to his bed, and almost utterly unfit for business of any kind whatever. In November of last year he had an intermittent attack, in which liis luugs sympathized. A similar Attack in January was the commencement of his last sickness. On Tuesday of this week a hemor rhage re-opened, and he became rapidly weaker. At 4 o clock ibursday morn ing he became unconscious, and remain ed so, with but very few and brief lucid intervals, to tbe moment of his departure. He called for his family, as he was dying, and bade them good bye. ine loss to tbe .Masonic traternity ol the State by tbe death of Mr. King, wbo held the office of Grand Recorder and Grand Secretary for the four Grand Bodies, is serious and heartfelt "Uncle Frank" was well known throughout the State, and the youngest Mason delighted to know him. Since the middle of February, George II. Fleming, of this city, has been discharging the official duties ot Mr. King. The funeral has been get for Tuesday next, and the Ritual ot the Ancient Craft Masonry will be used. The other three Masonic organizations will take their 'proper places in the procession, and participate, in some measure, in the ceremonies at the grave. - "Rest to bis aehea, and peace to bla soul," Hiohlt Important Rumor. We heard last evening a rumor, says tbe New Orleans True Delta of the 8th, which, if true, is of tbe very greatest importance. The statement comes to us both from fassengers by the steamer Olive Branch which arrived last night) and from whilom friends and admirers of "His Excellency," who a few months since were known as tbe "grapevine." Tbey state tbat Jeff. Davis, accompanied by a body guard composed of Texas cavalry, crossed the Mississippi river in launches at Tunica Bend on last Sunday night, and moved rapidly forward toward tbe Atchafalaya river, having entirely escaped the observation of our naval forces. As Davis left Richmond oo the evening of the 2d, he has had plenty of time to reach the point indicated. Should this report prove well founded the question of "what to do with him," had be fallen into tbe hands of our Government, will be happily got rid of. Miss Dr. Waleeb in Thouhlk Again. This eccentric woman of masculine proclivities, whose appointment as surgeon in the army and subsequent capture by the rebels, we see by the Louisville papers, has bad another muss at Clarksville, Tenn. In fact, Dr. Mary is always in hot water or getting others in it In this case it seems that tbe feminine disciple of Esculapius took exceptions to tbe decorations in the Episcopalean Church on Easter Sunday, wherein she thought that there was too much red and white displayed for th quantity of blue on hand, and showed her indignation in manner rather too emphatic for tbe time and place. Tbe Journals correspendent thus describes the scene: She seemed much interested in our beautiful service until the chant " Te Deum Laudamus" was begun, when all rose to their feet Stepping forward, she pinned a piece of blue ribbon to the utcred lily, looking defiantly at the minister, who immediately took it off. A moment more, and our Easter offering lay ruthlessly scattered and torn. Indignation and sorrow prevailed a momentary pause in the choir; a gentle look of reproof from our pastor, and the services proceeded as if nothing had occurred. After tbe sermon Mr. Ringgold spoke very pathetically of the great calamity befallen the nation, beseeching all to come forward with love and sorrow in their hearts, "for tbe nation is stained with blood," and then, in delicate reference to tbe event of the morning, begged the congregation to leave all political and party feeling at the door, adding: "Here we know only one distinction those who love Jesus and those wbo love him not" Last night, Major Walker entered the church very early and placed a miniature American flag, tied with crape, on the font, and laid beside it an emhjematical boquet tied with tbe same. Mr. R- , hearing of it, called on Colonel Smith, the military commandant of the post (fearing a continuation of the morning scene), who informed him that she intended them both as her Easter offering. Tb church, at an early hoar,
crowded to otirflowing with
military. Major Wa!kr wore her piatois, i if either expecting or intending a disturoance When tbe contribution wag made, Mr. R. leaned forward, laid tbe flowers carefnlly on the plate, and, as he was in the act of takin? tbe fla?. the Maior indig nantly seized it and replaced it. tvery soldier wa on the alert, and now every eye brihtened at the idea of resenting an insult, aa tbey thought. liut Mr. K. proceeded again with tbe eervice. The unprecedented audience that pressed its way into LMasonic Temple last night, comprising the very elite of tbe city, was a handsome compliment to the beautiful and highly gifted, young Tragtdinne, Miss Fanny R Price, and showed how greatly she is a favorite with our people. She showed her appreciation of the compliment, by her very superior acting in the character of Julia in the Hunchback, her rendition of which is seldom equalled. In the scene in which she pleads with Master Walter to absolve her from the nuptials, which she loathed, she rose almost to sublimity, and thrilled every intelligent mind in the audience. She won during tbe evening the most vehement applause. Mrs. Bella Golden also played magnificently, aod was received w.th evidences of high appreciation. Mr. Hanchett, Mr. Uolden aud Mr. Pierce acquitted themselves in the most commendable manner. We never saw Mr. Golden appear to better advantage, and Mr. Hanchett is beyond criticism by our pen. Another highly attractive bill will be presented to-night, and we predict another crowded bouse. We hope tbere will be better order preserved in the gallery, and tbat tbe audience will remain seated until the curtain falls at the cjose of the play. It is in extreme bad taste (or gentlemen to start out just as tbe play is winding to a close, and savors of a want of good breeding. Mozart Hall. On Thursday aud Friday nights delightful entertainments will be given at Mozart Hall, by the young gentlemen and ladies of the city, for the benefit of the Society of the Daughters of Rebekah.' We hops to sea it well patronized. .... .
