The Nation's Olooj. The feeling of noiTersaT gloom still pervades our city, and although business baa to soma extent been resamed, still there is an air of sadness and grief that would indicate evert to a stranger that had not yet heard the news, that some terrible calamity,
some bitter bereavement, had fallen on the whole community. .
I AU houses public, .business, and pn vate still display the insignia of mourning, and ; an 'increasing desire for farther news, and especially of the captare of the assassin, prevails. And well may the whole nation mourn. Not only has an unspeakable crime een committed, but the best man in the nation since
the days of Washington, has been cut down in the midst of his usefulness, and when the hope of the country and of the world were centered about him.

Cantwell. an

' from the county 'Auditor a couuty order for six . hundred dollars, and is relieved from the draft for one 'year, and says the thing is without political significance. Cantwell pays six hundred dollars to put in a substitute, and Niblack gets six hundred paid to him for' doing it. ' If the transaction had not been a "private and mere business one'' we would like to bare a lull statement of how much Judge Niblack's liability and bow it is; hut being private we won't pry into private business, bat with the limited info-msti'jn we have,
we conclude that the county was bled for six hundred dollars, one thief if not two,
escaped justice and Judge Niblack pro
cured a substitute.

The Capture of Mobile. So univer.
sal was the grief of our citiseos, by reason of the great national calamity that
has befallen us, that the important news received on Sunday night, and which appeared iu the Journal alone yesterday morning, failed to excite more than a passing remark. Under other circumstances the announcement of so important a jictuty would have called forth Te Deums from the people, for it is a victory jfio small importance. '. ' j Aside from being the last sea port held y the rebels east of the Mississippi, its ioupture opens up to us the whole of .Interior . Alabama, Mississippi and deSfgia'.'a'rid "affords' us water navigation to the heart of all those States. With Mobile in our possession, the whole reel power . in' those States is broken. Wilson with his vast cavalry force is
sweeping down through Alabama and Mississippi, and has already captured their most important towns and cities, together with vast quantities of cannon and ' other material, and large numbers
or prisoners. With the formidable military organizations of Forrest, Dick Taylor and Maury
captured and dispersed, the work of clearing the country of guerrillas will he speedily accomplished. - Thtf news, too, is "received tha GeH. Joe Johnston was . negotiating a few days ago with Geft. Sherman for the sirreodwjJttT the latter of. the only remaining rebel army east of tbe Mississippi, and ere now, no doubt, Johnston and the
remnant of his army are prisoners of war. t All that now remains is to free Texas and Southwestern Arkansas and Wsstern Louisiana ' of tbe trans-Mississippi army, which, with a portion of Grant's Veterans, aided by Canby's Western heroes, will prove but a pleasant pass time to the " boys."' ' 1 ' j The untimely death of Abraham Lin-
cola alone prevents the nation from bursting forth with tbe most tumultuous '- .-Pi . . ! FcmebaIi Ousequeis. The entertainment at Mozart LTall last sight, was a most pleasing affair, and reflected much credit on those engaged in it. . The Hall was magnificently decorated and in the most admirable taste. , The walla were draped in mourning, interspersed with flags, pictures and evergreens,, On one side were the. portrait of Abraham Lincoln and beneath it the Emancipation Proclamation. Over the gallery was stretched a black cloth, on
which was inscribed, " Qur Country, and in front of it was the beautiful Banner of the Crescent City Silver Band, who from the gallery, played appropri
ate music in their inimitable style. The stage was decorated with great taste and beauty! A' l' In front was a large American fiag draped with black, and in scribed " A. The exercises throughout were highly appropriate tapd impressive. The closing -TaWeaa was exceedingly fine, and e'icited great admiration. , Out. German fallow citizens are no less noted for their good taste in such displays thuo. for their patriotism and loyally.....,'?,!..'' ; L" 7 ' .
: Caftcred and Sextekceo to Death Powell Hardeman, a noted leader ol a band of guerrillas, says the Louisville Journal, was1 captured at PulaaVi a few days ago by Col W. E. Gil more, whose plantation was visited by Hardeman some months ago and $ 9,000 worth of Drotertv destroyed, lie went , into Pu-
laski, having in bis possessioa the amnesty oath of allegiancet and had the audacity to call npon'Z Geo! Kicbard Johnson, from whom he received a pass to go out of the picket lines. No suspi
cions were entertained ot bis true character, and he was allowed to leave, but fortunately CoL Gilmore met and recognized him just as he was about to pass the pickets, and he was immediately tried by court-martial A&d sentenced to be hung, which; has been approved by tbe General commanding. H claimed to be a regular Confederate 'soldier, but that did not help his case, as be could only be dealt with as a spy, being found within our lines. 4 Unless bis Sentence is mitigated by the President, he will expiate his crimes on the gallows. A Serious Affrat. We learned Jas, night some particulars Of a very serious shooting affair that occurred on Sunday, a few miles above the city. - V '. From the testimony it appears that
Taylor nigginbottonyhad a quarrel with Z. Aydolett, Daniel "Lacy,? and H. C. Lacy, in regard to some lumber and fence-raila Aydolett 'came from his house with a club, carsing and abusing Bigginbottom. Dan. Lacy ran up and struck H. with a cone spear or with a club, it was not clear which, biggin
bottom started to run, when LL Lacy fired at him and ordered him to step, which he did. All 'three then started towards him, D. Lacy with an oar and. his brother with a pistol. On the way, Aydolett seized the pistol and Bbot Hig ginbottom in the , breast, producing a painful, and it is believed fatal, wound. Higgiubottom is lying in a very precarious condition. " " "'" rj ' ' ' , Aydolett and both' the ' Lacys were arrested on Sunday evening by Deputy Sheriff Long and Constable Joe Jewett, and yesterday bad a preliminary examination before Esquire Walker, who held them to answer 1 in $2,000 bail each, in
default of which they were sent to jaiL
Pcital Monet Orders. The postal
money-order system deserves to be more generally appreciated than we think it
is. , .Its cheapness ana. satety snout a re
commend it to all having occasion to
transmit small sums, by mail, from
points where issuing offices are availa
ble A money order, unlike a bank check, never contains tbo name of the remitter or payee. On the issuing of
an order, an advice, containing all ne
cessary information, is immediately sent
to tbe post-master at tbe cilice ot pay

oresented. to detect any traud that
might be attempted. If a money order
is lost before it reaches tbe payee, a du

should an order. . for any reason, be re
turned to tbe remitter, it will be repaid
at the office of issue. If sent in an ta velone other than tbe one containing in
formation concerning it, the safety of
tbe remittance is absolute.
As the system becomes more extend

of the country an opportunity to avail
themselves of it, the practice of making limited remittance . by postal orders,
should become universal, and that ef in

The. cost cf Money Orders is very moderate, being only ten cents from one to ten dollars iorlusive; fifteen cents from eleven to twenty dollars, inclusive;

as his substitute and representative. A few days since, and weeks after the charge was made, Niblack published a card in the Vincennes Sun, in which he
admits that he took the man from the jail, bnt says that he has not made anything in the transaction. . ' . , ' The honest men of the First District who voted for Judge Niblack must feel
proud that their Representative is represented by a thief in the army. A Singular Piece of Mechakism.
Some of our Union soldiers who have lately returned from the rebel prisons, have brought with them a piece of their
handiwork, which is well worth a special
visit It consists of a clock, made by several ingenious fellows to while away
their weary hours at Salisbury, IS. u.
during their imprisonment last winter. The mainspring is made from the blade
of a saber wbtc'i once belonged to Stone
wall J ackson. Tbe hair-spring and bal
ance wheel were taken from the tele
graph office time piece, Andersonville,
ua. Ine bands are made of a toasting-
fork from the kitchen of Vice President
Stephens. Tbe wheels are made from
the mountings of carriages, etc., of prom
inent Southerners. Tbe pillars which
connect the frame are made of a ram-
red, and nearly all tbe parts are taken
from something picked up in the Confed
eracy, and nave more or less romance
attached to them. Louisville Demo-

-,' 15fi?"The merchants of Nashville have
appealed to Maj. Gen. Thomas, Gov.
Brownlow, and others, to petition the
War Department to remove the restric
tions upon the trade of that city, requiring permits for all goods imported. Tht reason of these restrictions was to prevent articles from being taken into the lines of the enemy which might be of service to them in carrying on the rebellion. Since the imposition of these restrictions the' rebel army has been
driven a long distance beyond the reach of the trade from that city, and with a hopeless prospect of ever returning.
Not an article of goods, wares, or merchandize brought to Nashville would ever reach a rebel organized force. The cause of these being removed, we think the restrictions which might in many instances work great hardships, out to ba rescinded. ,
