A gentleman from Brazil informs the Indianapolis Journal that boring for oil is in progress at several points in Clay county. A well which is being sunk in the neighborhood of Keel's mills bat attained considerable depth. The indications are said to be flattering. tQF Mrs. Lortoda S. Covert, wife of Uev. John Covert, late President of the ferre Haute Female College, died in Fulton. Ills., on the 21st ulL She was very excellent and accomplished lady. jyThe Richmond papers, a few days ngo, said teat urunt couia not wait. Grant didn't wait, neither did Gen. Lee wait for him. , Gov. Browslow's Isacocral. We are indebted to Mr. Vm. H. Axe for a copy of the Nashville Timet Extra of tbe Alb, containing tbe Inaugural AdU dress of Gov. Brownlow, which, judging from a hasty reading, we take to be an able and dignified and commendably brief State papr. ISP Shipping by the Quartermaster from this port is quite slack now, and if Grant and Sherman and Sheridan and Thomas and Canby continue their ex ploits a few weeks longer, Quartermas ters will become more ornamental. Who has Got the Button? Who has not heard the anxious enquiry, " Who has got the Button T " We know now to a certainty Little Phil. Sheridan, of course ; and he has a Corse too. A Gat Partt. When it was ascertained last evening that tbe Ruth would lie here for some hours, the young ladies of the city arranged a nice little hop on board. The spacious cabin was cleared, and a band being.procured, the young ladies and gentlemen of the city, joined by the passengers, mingled in the mazes-of the giddy dance until the boat tolled her mammoth bell to leave. Rather Late in tub Season. The Dispatch of yesterday morning pub linlied, as editorial, an item with the sid-heading, "Fixino Up," prefixed. With proper enterprise they might have copied it from the Journal of March 22d, and then it would have had at least an air of freshness if not of originality. We have no objection to tbe appropria tion of our gems, by our contemporary, but we would have.taken it as a higher compliment had they been able to have seen the beauty of the sentiment before it had been copied as original by some half dozen other papers. &2T The new Legislature of Tennessee has b'een in session Bince Monday. On Tuesday it completed its organization by electing Wm. Heiskell, ol Knox, as Speaker. In the Senate, S. R. Rogers, of Knox, was elected President The votes for Governor were counted in tbe afternoon. Brownlow, of Knox, received twenty-three thousand three hundred and fifty-two votes in tbe State for Governor. The inauguration of the Governor took place on Wednesday, and was attended with great rejoicing over the restoration of tbe State to its place in the UnioD, and over the glorious victories in Virginia. Among the first acts of the Legislature will be the adoption of the Constitutional Amendment, we have no doubt .Perry County Petroleum Company. We are advised that some of our substantial business men intend to organize a company under the above title. They have been several months in securing some of . the,, best oil lands in Perry County, Indiana, and in other localitiesA nnmber ot Oil springs are on the land secured, by tliem. Companies from Pennsylvania and elsewhere are sinking wells adjacent -to their lands, and the above named company intends to test thalc. lands the coming season, with every assurance of success, as the indications are equal to those of the best oil lauds in Pennsylvania. t&" We have heard of quite a number of prominent Copperhead "in these parts," says the Indianapolis Journal, who h ave been bled pretty freely since the reception of the news of the capture of Richmond, they having bet large sums that the rebel stronghold would be in possession of the Federal army by the first day ol May next. Served em right. , . . , ; - Bushwhackers. General Sanborn telegraphs from Springfield, Mo., that a portion of his command had captured fourteen guerrillas who were on their way to North Missouri from Price's army. Captain Mitchell, of the Aqdrian county militia, killed three guerrillas on Tuesday, the people of the county turning out in large numbers to hunt down the vagabonds.

If gold goes down to par, tbey will be able to gst very cheap labor, but money will be so valuable that it will be much more difficult to procure than at present With all its advantages and the heavy amount of capital invested there, (and in the shoe buainess, and some other interests, it mav take rank with the largest Western cities, not even ex cepting Cincinnati, 8t Loais, Louis ville and Chicago.) Evansville, it sunt be confessed, is rather a alow coach. Looking at the people, and at the place itself, although pretty well built of brick, it wore less of the aspect of a city than Cairo. There were . two or three stern-wheelers lying at the wharf, which seems to be very well (at one point) graded and paved, and the Glendale was loading with bay and Government stores lor Nashville. There was an air of sleepiness and repose pervading the whole place. Trae, it was Sunday, but it was not the lees an opportune time to see the population which was pretty generally drawn to the landing by the ealliope ot tne euros. . agw Bushwhackers in Missouri, A letter from Fulton to CoL Baker states that on the evening of the 39th of March one Warren Martin, a notorious bushwhacker and others, went to Cote Bans Dessein, and killed three negroes. Tbey next went to Charles Foy's and took all his money, about $100. Theooe they went to the store of Mr. Hay and took 00 from him, bat returned it when they learned that he had been in the rebel army. They next went to the house of Wilson Finley, an old man, and took what money he had. Before leaving Cote Sans Dessein, Martin put up the following notice at Uay store: " Tbe negroes were killed because they were away from their masters, by W. W. MARTIN, A young Hellion of Callaway Co.' A squad of twenty men were sent in pursuit of the bushwhackers. X hey ar rested Wm. Scott, on suspicion of being concerned in the killing ot the negroes. Scott attemnted to eacane and was ki.led. It is tbe general belief that Martin and his band were sent by former slaveholders to kill all the negroes, and there was quite a panic in the neighborhood of Cote Sans Dessein. Mo. Democrat. Heavy Robbery. On Saturday last Cavender Howse deposited with Uapt Coryell, No 6 Olive Street, St Louis, Uovernment - vouchers , amounting to about $8,000. At dinner time Capt Coryell's clerks dtepped out for ' a few moments, leaving a man oy tne name of J. O. Freel, formerly a olerk in tbe office, but recently discharged, alone in the office. At two o'clock Freel we&t into Cavender Sc Rowse's and offered for sale nine of the vouchers which they had a short time before deposited with Capt Coryell Mr. Rowse, on being offered toe yppcheri, recognized them, and asked Freel where be bad got them. Freel said he had obtained them of Thompson. Freel was at once gobbled and locked up in a small wood closet at tbe rear of tbe office, and Fagal and Brownfield ' sent. for. They searched Freel, and found portion of them on his person, and the balance (sixteen) were found concealed in the oloset which Rowse had converted into a prison for the occupancy of his captive. Freel had stolen the vouchers during the absence of tbe 'clerks, and, not knowing who they belonged to, offered a part of them for sale to the real owners. Freel was taken to the calaboose. DisGBACxruL. As a funeral party of colored people were bearing a corpse to its last resting place, and while passing at' the corner of Rampart and Thalia Streets, a crowd of young rowdies assaulted the procession. The . excitement and indignation arising therefrom, brought a large crowd to the scene. Those who would thus violate the sacred " rights of a funeral cortege, deserve the severest punishment The guilty ones should be detected and made to suffer for this gross violation of law.. iVew Or lean Timet. A Crevasse. It ia stated that a serious crevasse haa occurred in the right bank of tbe river, about twelve miles above Baton Rouge. The opening in the levee is about two miles in width.
