M& Tbe situation in Virginia is be coming more Baa more interesting. Sheridan . ba beaded Lee off, and tbe latter ii in imminent danger of being captured with his army, as will be seen from our dispatches this morning, which, owing to tbe break in tbe wires, we failed to receive in time for our after noon edition yesterday. Gen. Weitzel's captures in Richmond were enormou, including 500 guns, 30 locomotives, 300 cars, 5,000 muskets, and 6,000 prisoners. The Tredegar Iron Works, Libby Prison, and Cattle Thunder are uninjured, tbe latter of which are filled with rebel prisonerspoetic and retributive justice. We expect overwhelmingly glorious news to-day, Fib!. About three o'clock yesterday morning tbe Picayune Mills, corner of Eighth and Walnut streets, was discover ed to be on fire, and tbe alarm was im mediately given, and the engine was got out with the usual dispatch, but in cross ing from Main to Locust street, on Sev euth, it stack in the mud, and the mill, hich burned rapidly, was entirely con Burned.-- - The. ;' mill was owned by the Mills Brothers, and bad a large amount of wheat' iu it, but bad not been running fofiome time, and the burning was manifestly the work of an incendiary. The fire was extraordinarily bright, lighting 'tip the whole city with its highsbootirjff flames, and arouBine more Deopie by the reflection of its flames than were aroused by the fire-bell. I Several houses across the street were on fire, and. iu imminent danger of de struction, but were saved by the prompt efforts of citizens, with buckets of water. Tbe small building on the corner uned as an office was also consumed. We are informed there was a policy of insurance on the building for $10,000 and orr the stock for ?2,000, which is probably 'much lees thun the loss. naT1 Yesterday was beautiful, and the sidewalks and stores were thronged with beautiful ladies a class, of humanity with wLifjh Eransville does greatly abound.; , T1R beautiful weather and tbe gfajtfT (a&lfin dry goods, render (hopping"! quite brisk. ' ' l&yThe Louisville Journal of Tuesday has an account of a fight with guerrillas on Wednesday of last week, at or near Slaughtemville. As we see persons from that vicinity almost daily, and have not heard of any such an affair, we presume tbe Journal has been wrongly informed. cjyWe learn that the Merchants' National Bank will occupy the building now occupied by Mr, John Healy, corner of Main and First Streets, and Mr. Healy will remove to the new building now being erected by Mr. Yeile on First Street ; We have not letirned when the new Bank will open. Jcmpeo Overboard As the Idahoe was on her way up from tbe Cumberland river, on Wednesday night, a lady on board, who bad been noticed as apparently not in sound mind, jumped overboard and was drowned. Her son was on board of tbe boat ut the time, and was in great distress at tba sad occurrence. We were unable to ascertain the name of tbe unfortunate woman. She was first misled when the boat was near Uniontown. , : Jeffersonville Union Ledger. Thus is styled a new weekly which we find on our table. It is published at Jeffersonville by W. S. Ferrier. It gives evidence of marked ability, and is neatly printed. ' We wish it success. . . A tSf The Richmond papers say that at a meeting held at Wytheville to raise food for Lee's army, the contributions amounted to but one day's short rations ' toT A respite of thirty days has been granted to the guerrillas Ashcraft and Nichols, sentenced to be hung at Lexington, Ky., and sixty days to C. K Johnson, sentenced to be bung at Louisville. ,;'.';-. ' A Fioht. We' learn that there was a fight oat at the race track yesterday afternoon. The" dispute arose about a bet " Hard words followed And these were succeeded by blows, and the blows should have been succeeded by arrerts, fine, ic, but we presume they were not Lively. Capt Joe Bunce, who has been spending - a day or two in our city, says we have tbe liveliest town that he has seen for some time.-- It is the general expression of all sensible and candid men that Evansville is fast becoming tbe greatest commercial city on the lower Ohio. If our people will only awake full to our own interests and foster our own institutions, and aid in increasing our manufactures, and encourage the proper improvements of our streets and city wbarf, our prosperity : will know bo limit for years. upaata oa MfMtataa ran. KewOkleavs, March29. A despatch . . . .- -i . was received Here to-aar swung umi, oa the morning of the 27th, the Tenth corps began to bombard Spanish Fort. This is a powerful work of sixteen guns. on tbe east side oi tne Day, opposite Mobile. Persons arriving from there report that both parties appear to be making preparations for a general siege. Gen. Canby takes personal command of all the troop operating against Mo bile, v , j A correspondent with the 13th corps senda tbe following: Thas far our march has been undisputed by the rebels. About 100 rebel cavalry have been Been on our front, but they have continued to tali back as our army baa Advanced. A citizen informed me that be bad been to Mobile About six weeks previous, and that the rebels had About 6,000 troops in the city and About the seme number at lilakely on this side of tne Bay of Mobile. On the evening of the 23d and morn ing of the 24th, a mounted force of the enemy appeared on our fronL After a short but sharp skirmish I am told we killed four of their men And took two prisoners, after which they disappeared. A small mounted force has been hanging on our flanks for the past tea miles of our march. Jews Items. . Ccrious. A sixty pound cat-fish was caught in - White river, by Joe Schemerhorn, and sold to a gentleman in feast Bedford, last week, which, upon being opened, was found te contain an old English bull's-eye watch. From its ap pearance it had been a resident of the Aqueous navigator stomach for several years. The tinny watch-stuffer had evi dently taken " no note of time." Bed ford Independent. Tbe editor of the Baltimore American says the President's health is very good; be looks extremely well and is in excel lent spirits. His form is lithe and elas tic, his features firm And expressive of energy end vigorous tbougbt. And his manner of receiving his visitors indica tive of all that kindness of Leart for which be is so distinguished. "Ilk." The Jeffersonville Democrat says on naa oen louna on tut. Samuel Pat erson s farm, on Mill creek, within less than A mile of Jeffersonville. The Covington Friend sats the coal oil fever in that vicinity is still raging, and that the fever And agoe has some what subsided. 1 Flags for tbe Elitkbth Isdiana. A beautifml stand of colors has been presented to this regiment Inscribed on their battle flag is Komey, Fort Donelson, bbilob, rort Uibson, Champion Hill, Jackson, Vicksburg, Opequan, Ce dar Ireek and tishers ililL Nassau reports a revival of Northern nnd Union sentiment, and very long faces among its rebel blockade runners. A letter says: ; Thirty-four blockade running vessels are in harbor, witn nothing to do; and more than fifty warehouses are full of goods unsuitable for this market, and for which there is no Sale. Cargoes ordered from England three months ago are now arriving, and their owners Are send' tng them , back in the . same vessels, without being stored. By the time the business of these is wound up, they ' not, with a few exceptions, have made a dollar; and a very large proportion of them will be mch worse off than when they began. , t&" The New York Daily Neve declared, some months Ago, that An army of negroes "would water its horses next autumn in sthe Potomac and Susquehana," and considers its prophecy veri fied by the act ot tbe rebel Congress arming the slaves. The Newt is confident that the negroes will do for the Confederacy what its white soldiers have failed to do, and enable Lee to dictate the terms of peace on Northern soil The JVrp has been suddenly convinced of the martial qualities of the slaves. When the Federals first uniformed and armed them, it declared the policy an evidence of foolishness, aa the negroes Armed never fight Armed in the cause which the Newt has at heart, they become at once as formidable as the war-' riors who sprang from the dragon's teeth. y The NoBTflBRir Indiana Prison. The newly elected . Board of Control for the Northern Indiana Prison, succeeded last Friday in flanking the old Board, and obtaining possession of the institution. How it was accomplished we are not advised, except that the tactics of Grant were made available in the cutting off of tbe enemy's supplies. , The . Auditor of State, restrained by legal notice, could not Audit Any bilk, And as Democratic officials, however tenacious of office, .cannot subsist on half rationj, they made a virtue of necessity, And surrendered: .. r ; The new Board, consisting of Hon. Hugh Banna, of Wabash, President; John C. E. Shipley,' of Muncie, and Col. James & Dodge, of Warsaw, appointed the following officers: W C. La y ton, of Michigan City, Deputy Warden. W. C Smith, of Michigan City, the popular messenger of the American Express Company, Clerk. Dr. Bently, of Michigan City, Snxgeon. H. C. Skinner, of Wabash, Late Chaplain of the 8th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Moral Iaatructor. Richard Epperson, of Crawfordaville, Superintendent of Construction. Tom Wood still retains the Wardenship. Lafayette Courier. tSs&T" Lt Col John R. Brownlow of the 9th Tennessee cavalry, having resigned his commission, has accepted .the office of Special Aent of tbe Treasury Department for East Tennessee. Colonel Brownlow is a young gentlemen of fine talents, active, enterprising and industrious in his habits, and has an intimate acquaintance with the wants ot tbe people of East Tennessee. . The Government will have in him an able and efficient officer, And the pnblic a firm and sympathizing friend. The damage to the salt fields on the low lands bordering on the Onondaga lake is immense. The waters of the lake, augmented by the three days freshets, have set back iato these fields, and have iaandated and flooded the vats and washed off the covers over a "large areA. . ..."-. . v t& Within a few months extensive discoveries ' of petroleum the genuine article have been made, not only ia the valley of Mexico, but almost simultaneously in different parts of the Empire. It has been found is the most northern States, and also as far South as Tehaantepec XQ. C Williams, of Dalton, G., was sent north of the Ohio River last Saturday. Yesterday, he was presented to the provost marshal again, on the charge tf recruiting men in Madison, Ind., to follow the guerrilla business. He was sent to, the barracks for the present Exchange. Well, why shouldn't he go to recruiting? Ia not sending of traitors North ia premium on their treason? ' , ' , .

The "Amebicab" Laxgcage. The "diary" of G. Augustus Sala in America contains the following: You (Americans) from Chicago to Cape Cod, from Nevada to Nantucket, speak very nearly the same language and have pretty nearly the same pronunciAtion. We speak fifty different dialect Northumbrian, Lancastrian,

Cambrian, Phoenician, Ete, Cockney que rait jel -Some of us lisp, and some of ns drawl, and some of us stutter, and a great many of ns clap on H's where there' should be none, and take away the H's where they should be left. We are always peaking, and yet we speak badly. Cor philological doctors disagree. We have no academy (thank Heaven) And oo Dictionary; that is to say, we have a hundred, but do ant accept Any as final authority. In pronunciation, Oxford is at war with Cambridge, Dublin with both, and Edinburgh with an. The forum and tbe bar, tbe pulpit and the stage, Are in virulent an tagonism ; one paper calls a bishop s domain a "diocese," and another a "diocese;" And between Alford and Moon the Queen's English and the Dean's English it is difficult to choose. You have made np your minds that national shall be pronounced naytional, and ad vertisements shall be advertyaements: that defence shall be defense, and thea tre theater, and you Are happy. Last week a detachment of Fed eral soldiers went from Paris, Ky , to the house of a widow living in tbe vicin ity of the town, end demanded a noto rious guerrilla said to be concealed in the house. The widow indignantly de nied that any furniture of the kind was on her premises, and was sustained in the assertion by her son (nearly grown) and a schoolmaster boardmg with her. The house was, nevertheless, searched; but no discovery was made. 1 be com mander of the detachment, satisfied that the game was somewhere abont the olace, declared that be intended to smoke him out as the boys do hares. Alarmed, tbe virtuous widow led him to a closet under A flight of steps leading to the second story of tbe house, took up some of the flooring, and there, in a sut terranean hiding place, supplied with a bed and other -accommodations, lay tba rebel robber. The hiding place had been prepared expressly for such scoun drelA It strikes ns that tbe widow, ber eon, and the schoolmaster belong South and ongbt to be sent there. Chips rrom Prentice. ' Tbe Richmond Enquirer says that Gen. Sherman has resorted to tbe nse of the spade. Certainly. Does anybody suppose that After killing the rebellion he doesn't mean to bury it? A South Carolina editor suggests that the full-blood rebel negroes be put in one army and the mulattoes in another. We suppose he wants to see which will fight best, the black or tbe bleached. We understand that it Is not yet decided in what part of Charleston' tbe wooden netmeg establishment shall be located, alt is understood that the concern is to be upon the most extensive scale. The British papers are speculating upon the chances of a war with this country. Their speculations are very poor, but they would find a war with the United Stales a much pooler one. The rebels put the negroes into their Armies side by side with their white soldiers. - They have long known that white people and black mix pretty well. The most egotistical of all the Southern leaders are Bragg and Beauregard. They can claim without vanity to be tbe two I's of tbe rebellion. The Chicago Tribune has an article upon "Copperheads After the War." A good many of them, if after it at all, are After it At a safe distance. A Bull from Gen. Lee among Hampton's Horses. In his report of Hampton's alleged victory of the lOih, Gen. Lee says that he " attacked Gen. Kilpatrick at daylight this morning, and drove him. from his camp, taking his guns, wagons, many horses," Aa; and then he says that "the guns and wagons could not be brought off for the want of horses. Ibis is tbe old story ot tbe Arkansas lawyer and the iron pot: " May it please the court, I submit, in defence of my client, first, that when she borrowed the pot in question, it was broken; secondly, that when she re turned the pot, it was sound; and, thirdly, that she never bad the pot." WST Collector Draper reports the whole , amount of cotton captured at Savannah to be 38,500 bales, of which 6,000 bales are Sea Island. Tbe greater portion of it belonged to the Confeder ate Government. The Parke Counts Democrat has departed this life. The atmosphere of Parke is not favoiable to tbe growth of Copperheadism. Local IVotices.tThe Chinese Shawl in Schapker A Bassing's show-window is certainly the best, piece of needlework we have ever seen,, and has drawn crowd! of admirers ever" since it has been oa exhibition. We advise our lady- friends who have not seen this shawl to take a look at it within a few days, as we are informed that.it will be sent back to its owner next week. Snaxxv Goods at Avction.
