Davis is' lurking in the vicinity of Kichmond, waiting for soma kind-hearted Union friend to go out with his buggy and carry him into Richmond to take the oath. t&" Jeff. Davis boasted, when the re bellion broke Out, that' his followers should eee tbe Confederate flag floating over the Capitol at Washington. If he and his followers had stayed in Richmond, they could have seen the American lag floating Over the rebel capit 1, which is much better. Powoeb Monet. Capt. Billy Caldwell, and two or three other young gentlemen, turned oat yesterday, after the reception of the newe of the capture of Richmond, and in- an hour raised $130 to buy powder to celebrate the victory. . IIabd Wore. We noticed one or two hardened Copperheads who have persistently stouted it out against all the calls to repentance they have received, attempting, yesterday, to shout over the glorious news, but the sound died away iaiheir throats like the wail of the dying, r " - ' ' "Like the last ery of soms lost awimmar ia hi agony." In fact their "holler" was a painful abortion. - .v . A Bia Muss. There was, wa learn, a big -muee 'on! Third Street yesterday afternoon, in which pistols, beer-mugs, sling-shots, and knives were freely used. Several persons were mora or less in jured, one or two of them, it is thought, fatally. A number of arrests were made, and the jail received numerous addition. - There were so many different versions of the story that we were unable to determine the correct one. The affair will be investigated this morning, when the facts no doubt will be fully elicited. Bad whisky was no doubt at the bottom of it -. Bankable Fcsds. Kentucky bank notes were thrown out by our Banks yesterday and placed on tbe uncurrent list at J per cent discount, at whieh rate, for the convenience of their customers, they will be received until further notice. This seems to be the fate of all State Banks, and we should not be surprised to see the list of uncurrent Bank notes enlarged very. soon. Free Banks and Ohio currency is getting more plenty, and it is generally so mutilated aad ogly looking, compared with greenbacks aad National currency, that it is difficult to get rid of it, and it may share the fate of Kentucky Bank notes very soon.

bo Intelligence tint Hashed acfss the wires yesterday . rEorning," abooanciog tha occupation of the Rebel Capital by the Union army, produced the liveliert sensation, which si imately burst' forth in the wildest rejoicing. The magnificent Government flag belonging to tbe military headquarters in this city, was ran np ana naumea prouuiv m tu, breeze as if conscious of the importance of tbe achievements it annonnced, and as tha news flew from mouth to ear throughout the city, other Sags less pretentious but equally glorious, were flung forth, kissing the breeae with an air of triumph. . i Merchants quit buinee, mechanics left their shops, and the loud peal of merry bells rang forth peals of joy to a nation preserved, while it sounded tbe death-knell of the most wicked of all the rebellions that history will ever record. The military authorities at coon fired a salute at the upper end of the Wig warn, iu loud echoes proclaiming joy and gladness to the surrounding country It is said that the' animal man is al ways most docile Immediately after din ner, but it seemed different yesterday, for after dinner, when the people began to realise the full nature of the news and bad received official confirmation thereof, She qutljursts of rejoicing be came unspeakable. AH the beljs in the city rang forth their merry peals, dinner bells wera paraded ))j little misses, and balls were bought for tha specifto pur pose of adding to the general joy. : The city suddenly become tray with Sags and wild with tbe shout of rejoie ing. Men shook hands with a fervor unparalleled, aad embraced each other, and, in some cases, we believe, in a fit of absent-mindedness, no doubt, era braced wocaea too, and tbe streets be came crowded with masses of rejoicing men. women and children. i , The Crescent City Silver Band turned out and paraded the streets, playing pa triotic musio in their finest strains. The city schools were dismissed, and nearly 2,000 young students,' of both sexes rushed forth to s well the fast mul titudes that already thronged the streets. Juvenile military companies were hastily organised, and we were some what startled by meeting a column of dirty faced but happy urchin, with wood' en guns, and our own 11 year old hyena with a flag in ona hand and rapier at shoulder arms in the other,' marching at their bead, issuing orders with all the airs of an . 8th corporal in a-new rrgi ment The Band marched through the princir el streets, followed by thousands of man and boys, and even some women we be lieve, singing "John Brown's body and soul," "The Union Forever," "Down with the Traitor and up with the Stars," "We'll L hng Jeff Davis on a sour apple tree,' and we really wish they would, .and other such like classical and merry and melting hymns. The Band serenaded the Journal office and the Union office, and we believe Bischof made them a speech, at least we saw them responding ' to some patriotic and merry sentiment he had uttered, and washing it down with some of Sohmer's delicious Lager, which flowed with unusual freedom. They desired ns to make them speech, but having just finished discussing one of the Sherwood's fine dinners, we were too full for utterance, and de clined, telling them to do again what Bischof told them to, and they did. The rain for a long time had but little effect upon the patriotic ardor of the people, but when Heaven's deep diapason was aaaea to tne rejoicing over the fall of Richmond, and the rain began to coma down in chunks, the multitude fell slowly back and re tired in good order. As the crowd was dispersing we saw Capt Brooks hurrying towards the front with a bolt of red flannel which led ns to believe that the engagement would be renewed in the evening if the rain ceased, all of which may furnish a post script to the foregoing feeble remarks. jr. . About seven o clock tbe can non again belched forth in tones' of re joicing, which was kept up to a late hour. J : . , , Tbe Marine Hospital was grandly illu minated from base to turret, presenting a magnificent appearance. The city, however, was very quiet at an early hour, tha people evidently waiting in suspense for later new. ' X& The telegraph yeaterday reported that Richmond was on fire in one place. it aon t say wno urea it, out it is evi dently a plain case of firing the heart of the Confederacy! a WW a a . a nor. a number oi tbe young ladies and gentlemen of tha city had a nice hop on board the General Ander son, in honor of the capture of Rich mond. It was a very pleasant affair, and we are greatly obliged to tha young men managing it - ' . '- Stir It would be a glorious time now for Lea to make his grand march on the North. All eyea are now turned upon Richmond, aad his movement would be unobserved. Jaeb Bennett Grrraa Rbadt to Tabs thb Oatb. We learn that that distinguished compatriot of Capt Steele, Jake Bennett, made his appearance in Madiaonville, a few days ago, at the head of his band of robbers, and mustered the entire population of tha town. After they were drawn np in line he and his band of pickpockets leisurely and systematically robbed them, taking all snms ranging from 50 cents to $200 aad upwards, of which he found the people possessed. - "'' We had some doubts on the 'subject before, but now we know Bennett must be waiting for a baggy to come ia and take the oath. Latb News. A special to the Richmond papers dated at Montgomery, 2Sih, gives information of a Federal cavalry expedition that strnek the Alabama and Florid railroad twenty miles south of Montgomery, captured a train of cars, against which another train was ran and also captured. The expedition then proceeded south on tha railroad, and when but heard from, waa below Greenville. Where this expedition started aroam, ia sot give. .. .
