' Doring his whole confinement there he was never bat once pertained to step outside the prisen, and that once was for the privilege of drawing lot for the pleasure ot being hung or shot' Major Denny drew a blank .nd was re turned to the loathsome prison, where be remained until in May,, 1864, when ha was removed to Macon, thence to Charleston and thence to' Columbia. ' Everywhere they, received the same cruel and barbarous treatment, being compelled to live for six months without a single' meat ration'' ' Sorghum and corn' meal was their chief diet after leaving Richmond.. . . bit : Major Denny was in the same room with Cot Streight when that officer, with others, escaped from Libby Prison, but was too weak to undertake the trip. While at Columbia he twice made the effort to escape without success. The first time he walked bast toe guard with out being observed aud was out seven teen days and bad reached a point on the Savannah river sixty miles above Augusta, having traveled , About 140 mile, when he was re-taken, tied and placed in jail and returned to Columbia On the second occasion he was able to get but a few miles away when he was re-taken. These attempts were made in November. When Sherman was approaching Co lumbia, the prisoners were placed in. box cars and started to Charlotte, and while on their way, on the night of the 15th of February, Major Denny and others cut a hole in the side of the car with penknives,, and escaped. For eight or ten days they lay concealed in the oods',"wajtinj' Sherman's approachy be ing fed by negroes, whom they ' always found faithful and pretty well acquaint ed with the nature of 'the war bod its course. Y -'''-'-' - His companions were Capt. Gude, also of the 51stlndiana, and an officerof the 5th Tennessee cavalry. j'jc " " Learning that Sherman hnd turned to the right, they started for East Tennessee, a distance of" over two hundred, miles, on foot, and nearly all the way through an enemy s country'. -- ' ' Daring the whole ' time they were waiting for Sherman, they lay ' in the woods, , and were , . almost . constantly drenched with; rain-l They started "on their long and' perilous 'march with heavy hearts, but 'With '-a 'brave' determination. ' In South Carolina they found one Union man, who concealed them and aided them on their way, carrying them fourteen miles on his :': mules. Thence they rffcde ' their' 'way'" on . foot into North Carolina, 'guided sometimes and fed always by luitbful negroes flanking vtha. towns and traveling1' fey night only, and by unfrequented paths. After they had got some distance, they found Union men more frequent-ij iv Near Blountsville, East Tennessee. they ran ' across a rebel scouting party, but managed to elude them, and took to the mountains, and thence made their way with little further difficulty' until they reached the Federal" lines at Mo say Bridge, on the Holston, Al NewMarket they found the 51st Indiana regiment among the first troops they met with and the feelings of the worn out, ema ciated, ' and almost naked prisoners, at meeting their old comrades, can be bet ter imagined than described. They were immediately re-clothed, and every attention was shown them, and they were forwarded to Nashville, which place they reached after a journey of nearly six weeks. t 1 f Major Denny reached Vincennes about the middle of last week, and. ar rived in this city on Saturday, i We might fill, columns of our paper' with interesting incidents of his prison ' experience, of rebel inhumanity, and of his perilous and tiresome journey, but time and space will not permit. -- The Major is now in excellent health and is rapidly gaining strength, and by the time his furlough expires he will ba able to return to his regiment, anxious for an opportunity to settle a few old scores wita the fiendish scoundrels and worse than barbarians, who. so cruelly treated hi and, so cowardly assassin ated numters of his brother officers.
