' WiLsos'e OftEAT Raid CojmencaD. From an officer who had left Eastport on. Wednesday morning: last, we learn that Gea. Wilson's great raid has com m e need. ' The whole command moved out io gallant style on tkat morning, and, like HSierman's great army, will hence forth only be heard from through rebel sources.. ..The thorough equipment and preparation of the great cavalry force, tbe largest that ever moved in one body on tbe continent, assures as that they will be irrisistable in their inarch whereever they may go. Another jgentleman, an officer who left Chickasaw Bluffs on Thursday last, re ports that Wilson's ed'Miee was 13 miles from Eastport and found the roads much better than tbey had expected. The objective points of this exped tion, are, of course, only a matter of con lecture, but a fiance at tbe map will readily suggest Selma, Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama, Columbus and otbe interior towns ot Mississippi We shall await with eager anxiety, but with strong confidence, for develop ments, of the campaign, which is to last, we are told, 70 days. " A Dkspkeado. From Capt Dalsell just from Memphis, we learn that Major HfliTon of Sbawneetown, who it will be retnembered, shot Col Mills, his superior officer, sometime since, was brought op a prisoner on, the Robert Burns, to be sent East for trial At a wood yard in tbe chute of No. 16, the Major, whose ankles were graced with a chain and ball, slipped off the boat, carrying his ball and chain in his hand, and the country being covered with water he took to a bateau, and attempted to make his escape, but the Lieutenant who had liimia charge, .discovered him and re turned him to the boat, after a desperate struggle. The Major having obtained a case knife inflicted one or two ugly gashes on the Lieutenant Just previous to leaving Memphis, the Major, we are told, broke from bis guard and killed a negro who had accidently spit upon him.5. ? . - 4 i He was transferred to the railroad at Cairo, to be forwarded to Albany New York. Great Destxoctio by tbi Flood at New Liberty, Ills. A correspondent writing from New Liberty, Illinois, informs us that that village was nearly entirely destroyed by the high waters and a heavy gale that prevailed there oh "Sunday the 12th, and renewed on the following Friday. Houses were demolished, and tbe inhabitants driven oat until there were but two dwellings that bad not been destroyed. At tbe time tbe letter was written the water had fallen 7 feet, and the people were endeavoring to repair damages. The. river, has since risen again, and no doubt stilt greater damage has been doae.' Nearly all the houses were swept from their foundations. The damage in the town was estimated at $18,000, and . ia ' the surrounding country still wreater damage waa done. " , tcy Ths Canneiton Beporltr reporUi the following deatht by accident, ia ihat town week before last: On Wednesday evening Anton Kirsh, i drWf r in tbe tunnel of the coal mine, rVceived either from the falling of the mine or by the kicking of his male, a blow which caused hie death immediately. " While blasting in the coal mines oa Wednesday evening, Mr. Poehlein, a miner, was killed. On Wednesday, the 13 lb. inst., while assisting to toad a barge with rock, at tbe quary above town, Mr. Samuel Hoibrook was instantly killed, by tbe falling of a derrick. The fall was caused by tho breaking of a wooden gny, thus allow ing tbe derrick to swoop around into the river. - Mr. Holbrook was on the boat, with his back towards the derrick, and had therefore no opportunity to see his daflgee, or guard against iV The blow he received was, it is presumed, sufficient to ktH him tastatttiy. lie dropped into the river and air body has not been recovered. ggaT-The SaliaSarv (North Carolina) Watchman of March 9th. has the follow u t. ti.-i v -t - - ing: Sherman. Tbe prMDt condition of the Confedercr ie moat terrible, and tbe eimpaaion of Christiana cannot bat h exer cised toward ita citizens. . .Tboogsn da of women and children ia Richmond and other cities of the South, we are told, are literally starring to death. Tbe demoralization that peryades the army also exists to a great extent among tbe citizens. Many who in former days oc cupied respectable stations in society, and who were of the most reputable parentage, have fallen into the commission of crimes "which almost falsifies the tongue to enumerate, while the poor people are almost as a class sunk to tbe lowest level of moral depravity, in the State of Georgia and South Caro lina, the whole country through which Sherman's troops passed, has been de vastatedbouses have been razed to tbe around every blade of grass has been burned in fact hardly anything ia left that would suggest that civilization bad ever existed there. Thousands upon thou lands of citizens of the Con fed eracy, we are told by Hon. H. S. Foote, are anxious and ready to inaugurate a counter revolution in the nontb, if Mr. Lincoln will only issue a proclamation of general amnesty and guaranteeing the Southern States all the rights and privileges enjoyed before tbe disruption of tbe Union. The President does not do it, and in onr opinion will not, it be ing bis determination to utterly and ea tirely subjugate the people of the South. The Christian compassion of the JHapatch is very commendable. It is nnu sually commendable in that (as the Dir patch would have us believe) it is be stowed upon its enemies. But while it is pouring out its sympathy for rebels in watery paragraphs, why can't it find space for a picture like the following, which we take from the Cincinnati Timet? HoaaiBLK. i- ' Within tbe last six months 'the snntimeat of the country has be)n shocked by certain glimpses which have been given of prison-life and the prisons of the South. Between exchanged and escaped soldiers, who have experienced the barbarous incarceration of the rebels, we have become familiar with some of the most horrible pictures on record. The "Black Hole of Calcutta" was a little paradise by comparison with some ot the dens in Dixie. Nothing that we have seen, however, equals the accounts just published of a general exchange which took place at Northeast, a station oa the Wilmington and Goldsboro railroad. ' . -Ten thousand of our men- were to be exchangd only eight thousand six bu odrd and eighty-four appeared. In reply to inquiries concerning the residue, the rebel officers replied : - 1st Many of tbe Federal prisoners died ia the prisons after tbeir names bad been enrolled for exchange, but be fore tbe exchange had been effected. 2d Many had leaped from the cars en route for the exchange station, believing that they were simply ; being removed from one prison to another. " " ' . 3d. Many died oa tbe train as they were being conveyed for exchange. ' a Of the eight thousand, six hundred and eighty-four who were actually pre seated for exchange, two thousand were unable to stand erect " Tbe condition of these men," says a correspondent of the Philadelphia liupiirer who was present and saw them, "beggars all description. iIany of them were literally caked, and not only were they naked, but covered with sores, and tbeir flesh being eaten with vermin. " Many of them wore but a pair of filthy and ragged drawers, while some of the more fortunate had a shirt Some of tbem bad their gaunt and wasted frames shrouded in fragments of blankets and tents." , This is bad enough indeed, but it is not the worst. ' Squalid filth, nudity and wan and ghastly aspects were general ' A number of them," continues tbe Inquirer' $ correspondent, " were totally demented, ttark naked, their bodies be. daubed teith mud. , Gangrenous, ulcerous, their eyes running out their toes and Jinyers dropping off, they were'enaurtng the extreme oj human suffering. - A Nici Ride. He will go direct to Rio Jeneiro, and examine, the monntain ranges in the Southern . part of Brazil and the neighboring provinces. Blown Dow.
