EVAHSVILI. WD. TUEHDAT. .MAKCH SI liivei' IVows. The weather continue erjr sultry, with quits a, dashiog rain last evening. The rirer was swelling a littl, we think, Isst erenirrjj, and will no doubt be found riiting fast to-day, ai all our reports go to show that there if an extremely rapid rise at Cincinnati, with a full ritrer above. The late flood hat thrown a strong current on the levee aud washed out much of the filling in, leaving in one instance a ring bolt standing some three feet above ground. Speaking of ring bolts leads us to direct the attention of the City Council to the fact that there is a great scarcity of that very necessary article on the levee, and during the late high water boats found it extremely difficult to tie up safely. A dozen or mora should be planted at an early day. Bu linens was unusually brisk on the levee all day yesterday, and the wharf was constantly crowded with fine steamers. The arrivals since noon include the Tacouy, Naabvilie to Louisville; Lady Franklin and Kate Kilgour, Nashville to Cincinnati; Darling, Memphis to Cincinnati. The Lady Gay continued to receive freight up to dark last evening, and a constant stream of people flowed to and from her all day. She and her gentlemanly oilicers are worthy of all the encomiums that have been heaped upon them. The Luna was direct from St. Louis and bad considerable freight The John Kilgour, from Nashville had a considerable amount of cotton for Louisville and Cincinnati. We found our old friend 1'at Cleary aboard, looking as fre,sh as a new blown rose, aud as happy as a lark. The Lady Franklin was light. The Darling bad tome nine hundred bales of cotton, chiefly for Ciucinnati. She bad 51 bales for Drown, Dunkersou & Co., which goes forward this morning by the Hellefontaitie Cotton Express line, and will be beyond Cleveland before tho other is in Ciucinnati, a great item just now, when the price is going down rapidly. The (ilcudaU had a magnificent trip of freight lost night uud a cabin full of Ofople. She left about-dark. . The Marmore- got off lor Nashville Inst night, we believo. The Win. White left at dark for Fond ifivcr willi an excellent trip. The Ada Lyon ItUlut dark for Rochester with a moderate trip of freight, but lind a goodly nnmber of pussengers. The Ladona will enter the Wabash river trade, having cn her first trip on Wednesday evening. The Tucony had a moderate trip around from Nashville. She returns to the Cumberland to-morrow evening. A Fortrsi Monroa letter of yesterda sajs an arrival from tba White Home at a lata hoar last evsniojr reporta the arrival of Sheridan's cavalry force oa the north bank of the I'amunk, a few miJc from White llocse, at noon Saturday. The bridge across the river, which bad beea partially destroyed by the rebels, has been repaired by a portion of General Roberts's command, which was
sent to White House some days since in anticipation of the appearance of Sheridan at that point with Lis force. They will have no difficulty in crossing the river, which, it was supposed, would he effected by 12 o'clock last night Carlo Mabea at & arrow Keaape. Nbw Yobe, March 20. At Fredtri" k Hall Station a dispatch was found from Karly, savin; be was about to attack Sheridan s flank with two hundred mm at Goochland, bat that he was too la's by twenty-four hours. Two days were occupied in doatruyin the Central Railroad. The next move was to the Fredericksburg Hailroad; marching to the two crossings of the South Anna, one was found dalendml by infantry behind earthworks. A charge was made, tbe rebsls scaiters-J, and thrir guns captured. ' - Custar moved towards Ashland Sta tion, and on the way beard of Krly. Lie promised a furlough to tbe men who captured hi in. They pushed on with cheers. Captain Burton, of the Staff, having the swiftest horse, got up with Early Adjutant. Uurton, thinking tbe Adjutant was Early, demanded his strrrendsr. His answer was a shot that wounded Burton's horse, causing hint to fall and fastening the Captain to the ground. Early escaped again, but was finally forced to ford tbe Sooth Anna at a dangerous place. By this time Picketts's division, under Longstreet, was harried up to the near Ashland, (lis advance was mrt and driven back; skirmishing ensued, in which first oue and then the other was compellrxl to fall back. General Sheridan finally moved eastward to the Pamvnkr, picket ing one side and Longstreet the other. Tba Ureal Flood. Philadelphia, March 20. The Pittsourg vnronteu ot Saturday says: 'lhe Alleghany river during Friday fternoou rose 14 feet and one pitrt of this city waa comparatively under water. Tbe river washed the steps of the court bouse at tbe foot of Irwin street, lbe lower part of Pennsylvania street was rendered impassable by the flood. The First Ward of the city was flooded, and communications with all bridges cut off, except lor vehicles. Cellars as far aa Laycock street were fiiiej with water. Mechanics Street bridge was closed to travel for fear that it won Id be swept away. The water was slowly falling this evening. It will doubtless soon be witbin ltd accustomed banks and the danger past. By dispatches front other cities we learn that the aqueduct at Freeport and tha bridges at Kittaning and Oil City were carried away, and Oil City was quite submerged. Franklin was aUo flooded. Kvery tributary to the Allegheny and Monongahela ia swelling fearfully. On the Pennsylvania Railroad two bridges are reported to be swept away. Tbe Ft Vayne road is under water in several places. Tbe Alleghany Valley Railroad nas been immensely damaged by tbe loss of bridges and the destruction of the track. The Binghampton, Sonth nd West Hillsbnry mills have had to suspend operations, and residents of houses near the river have been driven p into the second and even third stories. The Pos says the leading dry goods bouse are marking down their prices to-day to correspond with the reduction in toe price of gold. A letter, dated opposite Kingston, March 14th, says the Mayor, with a deputation of tbe citizens, were on the op posite side of the river to surrender the city. There were no signs of the enemy. Tbe ram Cbickamauga was burned this morning, and is still smoking. The works defending tbe place were yery strong, and the only explanation of their being evacuated is the panic in the rebel army. Last Thursday he was at tbe crossing ot tne bontB Anna river by the Richmond and Fredericksburg kailroad, and expected to turn up at While Hou.e for supplies, but the Herald t City Fotnt correspondent says a dispatch from that point Friday says that he had not made his appearance. Scouta!were sent, and the people in in that vicinity say be had an engagement with Pickett's rebel division in which the latter were worsted. This report was confirmed bv deserters and exchanged prisoners. They say Pickett's division was harried out of Richmond last Sunday to meet Sheridan.
