Tbe mailespre and baggage car, in tbe expreta train that went from Terra Haute to Indianapoli on the 16th inL, (Tburday evening), wa totally destroyed by fire, together with much of tbe expreas matter, miMt of tbe baggage, and all iht mail. The fire originated in the mail room, and before it wa discovered the conteot of that room were all detroyed. It wa with great difficulty that any of the exprei matter and baggage could be aved. We are informed that ouly twelve trunk, ontof fifty, escaped the fire. Two doge were burned. All mail mattter, therefore, that left here on that morning by railroad, for Indianapolia and point beyond, including the lake citiet, and office in Northern Illinois and the North west, and tbe Eastern cities, and tbe principle cities in Ohio except Cincinnati is lout. No matter for way point between Terre Haute and Indianapoli is sent by the Express train. Only through matter goe by it. About twenty aeven bag of mail matter wa destroyed only a small portion from here. Tbe fire, it i auppoaed, wa caused by a spark from the locomotive. Deserved Promotions. His complexion was fair, long dark bair tbat tout-bed hi shoulders, and a beautifully-shaped mouth, and, in short, a very bandnome man. His whole demeanor waa firm and polite, and he bore tbe air of a man of culture and gentlemanly refinement He said be ''would have been twenty on year old next August, and would d e before hi manhood, and yet bad been a man to hit country." He wore a black velvet tap, a black or dark-blue jacket with one row of Kentucky State button, a pair of dark rassimere pants, and a pair of old boot cot down in imitation of a pair of shoes. ARRIVAL OF RL'R MURDY. He waa conveyed from tbe military prison in a carriage, accompanied by hi spiritual adviser, under a strong guard, and arrived at the place of execution about a quarter of four o'clock, preceded by martini music. It required several minutes to form the troops in proper order, the prisoner, in tbe meantime, remaining in the carriage, his lipl moving, as if praying, a white handkerchief up to hi eyes, and hi head leaniog up against the side of the carriage. TU EXECCTIOS. Captain George Hwope, of the 5th Indiana cavalry, and Protoat Marshal, had charge of tbe execution. The prisoner was conducted to the gallows in company with the minister, lloth knelt and offered up a prayer, after which Capt. Swope read the charges and specification to the prisoner. He seemed to pay Idlle attention to this, lit eyes Wi re half eloaed and hi lips continually in motion, evidently offering op bis last petition to God. "Lord, have merry on my poor loul," teemed, from the motion of his lips, lo be hi prayer. He was asked if be bad anything to say, to make it known. He directed bi remark to bi spiritual advisor in a ve.-y low voice, hardly audible: "1 am a regular Confederate aoldier, and eerved in the Confederate army four yearn, 1 fought under Gen, Buckner at Fort DnneUon, aud belonged to Gee. Morgan' command when be entered Kentucky. I have assisted, and taken many prisoners, and tiAve always treat ed them kindly. I was wouuded at Cynthiana ana cut nfl from my command. I have been in Kentucky ever since. I could prove that I am a regular Cotifed erate soldier, and bop in and die lor the Confederal cause ' A white cap wast then placed over his face, an I at the word three tbe prop was pulled from uader the trap. The fall waa not more than three (Vet, and did not break hi neck; like the other victim, he chocked to death. W e hare seen a g-reat many persons hung, but never before did we witness such bard struggle and convulsion. It waa feared for a time that he would break tbe lancing. Hi tiRerinis, however, were of short duration. Thus ended the career of tbe notorious Sue Mundy. He was left banging sum twenty minute before he waa cut down. Im mediately a crowd gathered around the body, some trjing to cut off a button, other auatchiug at the cord to secure , piece a a memento. A rumor wa darted that hi jacket contained a lot of ?rreenbacks, carefully sewed in the inicg. Accordingly, before he was placed in the coilin, a general search as inslituted, but nothing was found. A an evidence that be did have a heart and a fellow feeling in hi bosom, we append a letter to a Toung lady of this State, written in the Military Prison a few momenta before he waa taken to the place of execution: My Dear: I have to inform yoo of the sad fate that awaits your true friend. I am to suffer death this afternoon at 4 o'clock. , I send you from myebains a message of true love; and, a I stand on the brink of the grave, I tell you I do truly, and fondly, and forever love you. I am, ever truly, yours, M. Jerome Clare. Tbe Last. The term of Samuel L. Kugg, late Superintendent cf Public Instruction, says the Indianapolis J-wmal of Thursday, expired yesterday. He has reluctantly cut loose from the public crib, and betaken himself to the boeom of the faithful at Ft Wayne. Thus has the last of the Copperhead State officials retired from public life. May the providence tbat tempers the wind to the sheared sheep smoothe the Rufg-ed path for Mr. Rugg, and be merciful to him, a sinner. He is succeeded by Professor Hoss, an accomplished gen'leman and a scholar a " hoss" that will pull steady in the harness, neither kicking nor balking. Ixcidest ox yhk Battle-Field. The special correspondent of tbe Cincinnati CoMttle wild Gen. Cox, gives the following incident of tbe firat day's fight before Kingston: During yesterday, Lieutenant-Colonel Scott, 17ih Wisconsin, suddenly and unexpectedly ran upon five rebels. Asearning a Sold front, be ordered theia to su rrender. One of them replied, "I am hungry and tired. . I will do most anything for something to eat" Two others declared they wonld not "Yes yoo will," said the Colonel. . "Come here, fellows." They tremblingly looked at CoL Scott "You drop that," exclaimed CoL Scott, "right here." He did as he waa told. "Now band me that gun." He obeyed ajraia The CoL now having a weapon to ce, took aim at the others succrssively with the same cool effrontery already indicated, brought tbem all to bis side, and took them in triumph. Strange to say, be was witbout bia pistol, having no weapons to commence with bet bis sword and his boidneea.
