To-dat America come of age. To

day we employ anew the greatest of or

aerranU whom we hare tried four year and not fosnd wanting. Thie ie of rijrht s joyoua occaaion, when our feelinge cannot be expreeaed in mere word a time lor heartfelt thankfulneee and rrriew of tbe past. Today we look from a eland-point of comparative aafety, and it u a fit time to look back to oar teaeom of despondency and gloom, when "Uod waa teacing ns by a way which we knew not Amid the general rejoicing what loyal nu does not feel hi heart go back with a atert to far years ago, to the gloomy winter of '61, when all was doobt and uncertainty both among ruler and people. Then we were not yet certain that the many were willing to do anything in support of their country' honor, when the patriot felt as though shot in a temple wboee foundation were shakes: with a storm and which might at any moment bury him in its reioa. Then the very Capital of the nation was menaced, while Union Soldiers were held close prisoners ia Sontbern forte built to defend the very people who now stood in boa tile array against them ; and yet conciliation and compromise were still discussed to the balls of Coogress. Again, who does not remember, half with sorrow and half with shame, those terrible days of Jaly, 1S61, wbea we felt in onr inmost souls that our arm was whipped, that the exalting South erner had the mastery over ns, and danced in triumph over the rravee of oar slaughtered brethren. - And yet if we cob Id then have bad eur will swift victory asd aa easy peace the nation would have been ruined, As far a a high and holy mis on among nations was concerned, we would have been lost L. hollow truce would have been patched op, pride would have asarped the place of nation justice, the nation's sin would hav gathered strength, and ruin, at last, would have eome, deserved and crash ing. But Qod had a work for as to do, path for us to walk, and though at this our first defeat we groaned in spirit sowing no. hat to ask for as we ought, yet a mightier spirit made intercession for as " with groaninzs which could not be altered." After a season of inaction came succession or victories, aad we once more fondly hoped for a return of peaceBut we bad sot suffered enough. Wa were not yet ready to discard our idols, aad isasters again overtook our arms, aod the end of one year of active war found tbe Capital of the nation again io danger, aud the enemy confronting as almost ax our doors, i ben we awoke to the reeii y to at war wae upon us. Border State pt..y was thrown aside, the sword wa drawa in tha earn of justice, humanity aod freedom to all, and under the lead of new men our heroes hav marched on to victory. To-day oar victorious arm ic are la tbe heart of the Confederacy giving the last stroke to the rebellion. The flag which fouryear ago waa hauled dowa from Sumter's wall float there agaio in proud triumph; tbe birth-place of secession has bowed in bomaae to tbe epirit of liberty, aad rebellion receives iu hardest blows oa tbe very spot of lu origin. Is sot all this eufllcient cause for re joicing? Therefore let tb people come together with hearty hanksgiviog, with earnest .revolve of patriotism, and a determination ia the future, as is tbe past, to devot every energy to their country' defence, that soon w may all rejaics ia a Unioo restored, asd share the bleating of as elevated and reuew ad national life Taa I43tb Rioimeft. It ia aaid that this regiment is one of tha largest ever recruited ia the State, a the drew more gun than any other regiment ever armed ia the State. It is armed with the beet of Springfield rifle, and will prov aa efficient regi ment. . - Tosacco Maxeit. There is a perfect stagnation in th tobacco market ia this region aod few sales are effected.
