Thit it a common, rfry day remark by ilrangere viking un, and tli t-utb of the remark ie iodinputable. Our Poundriei aad Macltiun Shope, our Mditer Uuildera, our Architect!, oar Mechanic! and Artiiaoi are unrivaled anywhere, while our Pubtie hooli are the admiration and envy of all who vint them. Oar morcLanlt and buiinea. men, ai a general thing, are the most liberal, enterpriaing and ihrifiy of any we know, and are alwaye rt-atly to (jive of their means to every wstrtbv ohjttct. There are some drawback to our proiperity, it ii true, but we havo jjood reason to believe and bop. them will be removed in a very ihon time by an enlighied public sentirnto nd a proper application of the lame. The improvement of our itreeti, ol the city wharf, aad other deiirable im provementi have been oppoied by cer tain penoiii ia power through blind par timn xeal, but it ii hoped and believed that this eefuct will be remedied at the next April flection. A fit at clan hotel ii much needed here we mean a first clan bnildiog for utb a purpose aa we bave three boteli ihHt are kept eiceliently well to far at their capacitiei extend, but we need, and mu$t have iooo, a building tike the Terre tluute Uoute, the Bates or the liurtiHt, with the proper man at the bead ol' it, This is indiipeniible to tbe proper tuwth and prosperity ot our city. rJfantiville, aa a port of shipment and transfer, ii nut lurpantd, if eqaalled, on t he Ohio river. Wiih nivigation icareely ever uspt oded or serioualy interrupted, wi b ne o! the beet managed and best bails railroiads ia the West, wtb uu surpassed ateamboat lines to Louisville, Cairo, Memphis, and even New Orleans, and with fttciie arratteoients for putting freights through in the shortdt possible time to the Kast, as for instance ty the grvat Cotton Express, which carries freight to New York without re-ihtp-ment, and within ten days, we are aatar ally the nearest point lo New York and other great eastern commercial cities. Good from the East fur all points South can be shipped through thii port with greater diapatch than by any other route, so thru Evansville is really the natural tntrt and supply port for the entire Southwest. Our capitalists and business men need only be true to their own interests, withoit selSahne., and to the interests ci the city, without injustice, to make Evansville the great commercial metropolis of the Ohio Valley. Let as foster our own business enterprises, whether manufactures, mercantile establiahmerjta, railroad and steamboat lines, or whatever tends to the upbuilding of tbe city's ioterests, and our prosperity will know no limit. A Step Forward We are glad to ee that workmen bave commenced palling down the "old rookery" on the cornt of Main and 1st ttreet, to make room for tb splendid block-to be erected by the First National Bavnk and others. Tbe old wooden bui.'ding ba long been an eye sore to our citizen, and all will rajoice to see it diiappear before the enterprise and progress of tbe age. Preparations are, we notice, being made for other desirable and elegant improvement The old wooden bnildiog, occupied by P. Boyle as a bakery, oo Fint street, will soon give place to an elegant iron front, which will complete that square. We hope a spirit of improvement will also enter the proprietor of tb block opposite Masonic Hall on Firtt treat, and cans a change worthy of tha city and tha age ia which, wa Uv.

sTafThedren at InMet;ols t t.ave b-eo no r-'jr ctr o! p r ' fte cHtat eud ''. tamilieti of the ci J i.re well represented arr.oi in victia. Of contie there ii a grut stir, now, tc the quota with volunteer!, nd ctt rders are going off like hot cakes. Th bort-iighted policy, however, of waitii g
o ivee who was drafted before doing anybing toward raising funds to pay ricBotie to volunteers, will probably prove effective ia compelling many to shoulder their mnikets who might bave escaped bad a policy similar to our own been adopted. Volunteeri will sot be so plenty when it is known that substitutes ar in great demand. Oat of tbe large number of mea drafted, there are a great many wealthy persons wbo will at once secure substitutes, regardless of costs, and their effort will at once pat op the price to a figure far beyond the reach of conscript in o!y moderate cir cumstanced. Our poor peopl laboring men aad mechanic may well congratulate themselves on their narrow escape from tk draft. To Mayor Baker' shrewd ness and financial ingenuity they are largely indebted for their escape. The eminent practicability and justness of his plan for raising bounty fuad wai so apparent that every on felt disposed to go to work and have it successfully executed, and to day Evarjiville ocoopies tb proud position of having never been compelled by the merciless provision of tb draft to furnisk her share of men to put down rebellion and resistance to rightful authority. More than that Thogh she ba, within tb past yean paid oat forty thomand dollar i in bona ties, ber debt kas been ia so via increased, nor doe ib ow any money for bounties. Other cities have plunged bee! over head ia debt and bad their order hawked about their streets for sale, and thereby greatly depreciated, to avoid the draft. But, thanks to May or Baker financial skill and prudence, oar boantiei have been aid out of "csJ aaisd," and bo debtou this account will kauot tax payers ia future yean. A Littl Bruins Several steam boat Captain complain to as that thar are a st of harpies in this city who ar making money eat of steamboats ia a taaoner highly discreditable, if not dr.' serving of a harsher epithet. These men g aboard steamboats ly. ing at tb wharf here, and persaad bends to leave tbe boat under pretrnse that they can get better wae oo othr boat, and than without demanding the r pay the men this deluded from their place, are taken before a Magistrate aod a writ is taken agaiast tbe boat, and tbe officer aimed with this goes back, demand tk money and pockis bis lee Sack conduct a this is disgraceful to any Constable, and we cannot be liee that any Magi;rate ia the ciiy would knowingly lead himself to such contemptible system of plaaderiag stesmboats, for it is nothing else. When steamboat men refus to pay aftir a proper demand, then they should be made to pay whatever is die, but few boat ever do thus. VY bad occasion Ust season to an imadvert oa this nefarious practice, and tbe parties then engaged in it becsm ashamed of their act and qit tbe and we hop those now engaged ia tbe same practice will take tb bint Some believe that these men are allor. ing negroes from the boat for the pur poe of selling them as sabstitutas, they generally act an that class of steam boat hand.
