THE VERY LATEST

a t 1 If. JL. E Ci 1Z .V I II. Partlcwler of the Fight at Hatcher e ivaa. Headocabter3 Aet Potomac, Feb. 9. The fight below Hatcher's Kun yesterday was one of the mosi severe 6ght tbut Las taken place in this army for some time, and taking into considera tion the unfavorable character of the country through which the troops bad to move, and the lare force opposing their advance, it is no, strange that the enemy should cain temporary advan tage. The country from tbe crossing of the Kun to Dabney s Mills is very muddy, with swamps and ravines running through it in all directions, and one road is a narrow by-road not wide enough to allow two wagons to pass, and in many places in a very bad condition. Tbe 3d division of the 5;h Corps advanced, supported by the 1st and 2nd divisions, and also by a brigade of tbe 6th Corps. Tbe enemy was driven to and beyond the Mill on this road, about three miles from the crossing line bonnderies. There were no i -ss than four divisions of the enemy opposing our m-n, namely: Mahone's, I'crau's, Heath's and Gordon's old division, the latter three opposing the Fifib Corps, waile MatioLt's, acting independently, engaged Grg on the Yaofban road for some time, when Grejrg ordered his cavalry to dismount, and held bis opponent back, infiu tiii( gome loss Mahone finding no chauce to acccruplieh anythifie to this position, wheeled round aud march ing on a by-road running northwest, struck the left Hank of tbe 5th Corp, doubling it up and causing it to tall back on its centre, the woods beteg so thick as to render the format ;oa of a continuous line impossible. The command became somewhat confused, and a heavy fire which was poured in by Mahone's men made things still worse, and in a lew minute the entire line left their position, falling back rapidly towards the point they started from. The loss of the enemy is not known but is believed to be fully as large as outs. We took about ISO prisoners, among whom are uamber of oQicers. Notwithstanding tbe severe rin s!orui which set in last night and continuing a'd day to-day, freezing as it fell, the 3J division of tho It'h corps a Sauced to a point it bad reached yesterday at Barney's Mills, driving the enemy befirre them and into their work behind. Tbe fear of being cut off from the crossing at Vaughan Koad increased the confusion, and for a short time it teemed as though a regular panic bad seized upon our men, but upon reaching the open country oo Vaugbau Road, and finding no enemy and the bridges all sale and in possession of our troops, they becaro- roassured and ia a ehort time tbe greater part ot our troop were in a line ready to meet ihe eut rcy as aoon a he shou'd appear A few mint' ute after tbey did show themselves at the edge of the woods, they were met by such a storm of bullets as to send them back into the wood very quickly. Our loss during the day amounts to a'xiul sis hundred, and that ot Sunday to about two hundred, making the total number in the two days about eight hundred killed, wounded and missing. The casualties in this affair have not yet been reported, but are said to te varr few. This was all the fighting to day. Oar permanent lines now stand upon what wes formerly the extreme left of Fort Cumming's on the Squirrel level road to and acrots Hatcher's Ron at 'Armstrong's Mill, out to Barney s Mills, a distance of abiut 4 miles, all of which ground had been wrested from the enemy in the past three day, and make a line much sater anl more lormiUaDie than before. As soon s the weather permits, further active movement will without dubt take place in this vicinity. Mtslcaa .lwi. New Yore, Feb. V. By the steamer (ermany we have tbe New Orleans Tims of the 1st inst The only item of iuiereet, is the statement that a gemleman woo left Mobile on the 6ib ult., stales to that paper that powder from snngatmea was rapidly going awy. Tbe steamer Castle brings Hanover dates to the 4th nit. Adric-t from Mexico show that the Imperial forces were concentrating about Oaxaca, and will probably capture tbe place, but in the mean time nearly the whole of the State of Itasco is free from thef invaders, and they have thrown off tbe yoke of the Imperialists, so that other work will be ready for tbem after tbe fall of Oaxaca Indeed the whole country will bave to be conquered and re-conquered, and Maxiltau a prospects are very dubious. (luernllas are very troublesome. Reports of revolutions in the City of Mexico, though denied officially, continues. Tbe Juarists attacked Tolucco and captured the town of Watuffe. Acapulco has been by officers announced as abandoned. Artega has z,aU insurgents in Moselina. Tbe Imperialist, Uen. Vega, was defeated hy (Jen. Elfeurte in Scuoula. The Imperialists were able to hold the city ol Seocotlan only three days. Detroit, Feb. 'J. I he Ship Owners Convention met here last evening.
