The wathr for two dat has been quite moderate, but yesterday evening it grew rather colder, yet we hope to see one or two more mild day at present, which will do mach towardt softenj and rotting the ice. Tle rirer in jut full of floating ice, ' and when one ices it at close range, it it not so light and brittle at it appears at a distance. The P. K. Dnnkerton came down from ber ice harbor yesterday afternoon, and with some difficulty made ber Ibiidin?. She will leave this yening for Bowling Green and all way point, if the weather holds mild and navigation doe not become more difficult Capt. iJrinkwater will take her through if it lie within the rane of possibility. Anxious to see just how navigation is, we accepted an invitation to aecomi pany Cupt. J. V. Throop, yesterday, to the ice harbor below the city, to see the Armada come up through the (forge, and we shall never regret the experience. Col. Horn brook sent us down by Lit fast express, and we found the Darling Tacony, Armada, Glendale, Linnie Drown, and the gunboat Lue Haves snugly rnsconrtd under a willow point, where they lay perfect! tecure from danger. The Tacony had steam up, and had been enguged from early dawn in cutting herself oat, and about half-past four o'clock she rounded out and took ber way with the floating ice down stream. She ban a fine Government trip, and will no doubt get through s a'fely. The Qlendale was getting up steam and designed to try the contest last . evening, though it was unfortunate for ber that she could not or did not follow

in the wake of the Armada. This little pet of the Kvansville line, got up steam, and about 5 o'clock cast loose and like an old veteran breasted the storm of battb with the ice, and Sua was no sooner in the stream than the i outfit began. The river from shore to thore was crowded with heavy ice, tometimet floating in small cakes that offered no resistance whutever it her onward course, hut more freijw.Jiiily witU vast fields of corrugated ice bit etching almost from shore to shore, into which the gallant liltla craft dashed like a column of veterans led to an assault. Cleaving her way fur a while like a knife through the frigid obstruction, at length the would waver for a moment and then he born back by the densely floating nasi. Then falliug back in good order ho would with frfth strength rush to the attack, and, with an impetuosity that defied resistance, would plough tier way through the massive fields. A faint seam could be teen to open, but the gallant yot grand Armada would be borne back for a time, when presently recov ering herself, with a desperate effort sho would, break through the brrir. and for a short distance run through comparatively smooth water, ouly again to encounter a heavy floe. Alex, llowell, the prince of pilots, was at the wheel, and took advantage of every opening that presented itself, w hi lo Johnny Moore, assisted by John Poulk at the engines, answered the bells with a promptness and alacrity that deserves the highest commendation, and steadily the fought her way. For an hour gallantly she breasted the heavy columns of the approaching ico, aud every now and then we thought we were almost at the goal, a streak of clear wati r skirting the Kentucky shore, but another overwhelming mast would obstruct our progress, aud bear us back. Alter frequent attacks and frequent reputxes 111" gallant Armada finally triumphed, and shot clear of the ice into clear water. Like a sentient being, she seemed aware of her triumph, and almost leap ed out of the water, and dashed the spray proudly from her prow. Capt. Josh stood calmly on the hurricane, di recting every movement as with a mat' ter mind, and when we ttruck smooths tailing, we descended to the boiler deck, where we met Frank Collins with an auuudauca ot,. sanitary stores, and were refreshed. After getting uuder the lee of the point we had fair.sailing, aud landed Hull's wharf boat at teven o'clock, alter enc of the most exciting contests we have witnessed for many a day. It s due to Ad. Graham, the carpenter of the Arm a J a, to tay that he had everything pertaining to his department in the best condition, and Mr. Tucker the mate, watched with a vigilant eye for the slightest siga of disaster proving himself an invaluable ctlicer. We got through the last floe just in time, as the pumps had got filled with slush ice and it was necessary to stop to clean them. Had our steam given out while we were in the heavy pack we would have been borne back and compelled to abandon the effort. The Armada will leave for Cairo at 2 o'clock this afternoon. We rather incline lo the opinion that the Giendale will not try the perilous trip at present, but will lie to until the ice grows lighter. We may expect biats from above to; day. : ., We had the pleasure of meeting our clever friend, Capt. J. W. Rea, in the city last night. We learn that he hat retired from steamboating for the pres. ent on account of his health, which we hope will soon be fully restored. We received another private message from Capt. Alien Duncan, of the Cuba. She is still froze up in the Wabath, and ' is running low in liquid supplies. We sympathue, Allen. Capt. Tom Bolus advise as that the

, ,FanoyBrandeis will leave Louisville to day for the Tennessee River, and will be here to-morrow. She it new and tubtHBtial, and Capt. Tom it a brick.

tayt: The nr wa slowly rifinz all day yesterday, with about 7 feet water in the canal The surface of the water it "lid ice in the canal, and the. mark cannot h. any present guide. The weather continues intensely cold, the thermometer this morning at sunrise standing at only 4 degrees above zero, ta third time within the month that it has been to that point. At 1 p. m. the thermometer ranged as high aa 21 degreee, with no tun, hat the skiet heavily overcast with clouds, and a change of weather may'T fully anticipated to-day. " the fall yesteHay there was folly 5 feet water in the pass, and the falls pilot, Wm. Varble took the Cora S. over the talis to Portland, where the will load for the Cumberland under Government charte. The boats at Portland yetterday were the Cora 8., Taratcon, 8t. Cbarlet, Des Moines and Niagara. The latter it one of the Atlantic and Mississippi steamship line, and bad a good cargo engaged, bat the Captain deemed it prudent to abandon the trip to New Orleans for a few days and lay op for awhile. The flag-thip Tarascon wat preparing to start to Eastport, Tennesse river, last evening, under orders, and we presume she was the only steamboat depsrtar yntterday. ' i f t It was reported that the river had gorged at Rock Haven, but nothing definite wat known beyond the fact that no boatt had arrived from lower ports. REGULAR PACKETS. For Cincinnati.
