iv e hope the petition will not lie on
the table for any length of time, as it is
a question of very great importance, not
only to the city of Evansville but to the
State at large.
As we have before remarked, about
one-third of all tbe tobacco raised in the
southwest passes through or by this city,
aad, indeed, this is the greatest tobacco
center, except Louisvillein the west. In
addition to the large trade in this great
staple now centering here, preperations are being made to greatly increase this
trade.
A new stemmery the largest in the
couutry, perhaps has just been finished
and commenced operations, in addition
to several of no mean capasity that have
been doing a heavy business.
The Green River Tobacco Sale Ware
house will give a fresh impetus to the
trade, and render this a still more at'
tractive point to growers.
Besides these, one of the most active
and heavy operators has recently pur
chased most eligible ground for a new
stemmery, which he will build iurina-
toe coming summer, and which will greatly swell ti,8 i.tly immense traffic
m tooacco in this city.
It can readily b. Mn then, by onr
representatives at Indianapolis, the great advantage the city arid the whole
s given, which, in reality, is not worth
that sun of money." We concede that was the drift of our article, and is not that
the fact? ' Knox county has not issued
any bonds, says the above card, but "pledged her faith to issue to each vol
unteer credited to the county orders on
her Treasury for tbe sura of I GOO, paya ble January 1st, 1856, and bearing ia terest from date." The distinction at
tempted to be made between bonds and orders, is a distinction without a differ
ence. Both alike are promitet to pay.
Both would depend upon tbe ability, as
well as the good faith, of the people of
Kaon county for payment Neither of
them are equal to $600 in cash or any
thiag like it That is all we asserted or claimed. Now, as to the value of Knoz county orders, it is true the coouty compromised with the O. & M. Railroad Company after long litigation and re
peated judgments against her and the
issue of executions for the sale of her
property. The advertised sales may have been maliciovi. We have yet to
find a losing party to a suit who did
not regard nis successtul oppo
nent as 'fiwJicioia. The controversy
was compromised, hut did not
the terms of the compromise compel the connty to assume a heavy debt? Does
not Knox County to-day owe a debt of
sear $140,000, exclusive of that it pro
poses to contract in the payment of the bounties? Those bounties, as we
tuning a situation at a clerk in a store
or teacher 10 our p'lMic school.
I will only ity that if be take the same grounds a!aio.t everything wbica, errid to excess, or impiirprieiy used,
become sintul, 1 fear Uiat lucre are few atnukeiot-uu and few kiods of business that would escupi? Li condeiauatiou. I am free to acknowledge that I hare mistaken the object of the "Pastoral Letter," and I sea now that it is a kind
of "lluil" to the faithful, which they
are to accept as the rod of tbe law. it

Here are six of tha prominent clergymen of this city who gravely proclaim to tb world oot through a religious periodical, but through the col u n't us of a secular, political, daily jouri al, that their member have jumped the fence, and gone to drinking, card playing, wine drinking, attending theatres, and areia a fairway of going to the devil generally, in violation of the rules cf the church, and these six clcrgjmeii by so doing acknowledge that either they have no control over their own church members or that they themselves are in fault:. that they have net disciplined lbes erring ones and brought them back aii penitents to the iold, or turned t lit to out into the wot Id 1 suppose I s'lail be considered as scorning or scothng at rligion, bat such certainly is not my intention. We happen to know that some of the leading men of Vincennes regard the orders as comparatively of little value. They go so far as to assert that if the bounty "had been fixed at $200, more money would have been realized by the Tolunteers than from the $600." They go further; they assert that the appropriation was all wrong an imposition upon tha volunteers, as well as an outrage on tl people," and "it is
