They would have found it a rather troublesome job to have captured hen and would most likely have caught a tartar. fcsT Our thanks are hereby tendered Lieutenant James K. Patterson, of Gen. Work Orer Again. The Montzomery Appeal, of the27ih admiU that Hood has been defeated,
and is making his way out of Tennsssec and nays:
Allhonfb this may be a source of rejrret, it cannot bo tbi cause cf surprise. Under present circumstances u wouia be extromely hazardous, if i.4 suicidal, for Llood to attempt to bold his present nOBHIOit utuiicu tut; wiuier. n ueit ue entered the "Viite he had no hopes of retuaining, and so expressed himself to his army, except upon the condition ot bberman s defeat or 1 comas a discomfiture. Neither of these conticgences has happened. Sherman has accomplished his object and saved his army, while Thomas effected his retreat upon Nashville with less of damage to his forces than vw sustained by those of his adversary. Under this state of facta, we see no alternative left General Hood but to placo himself on this side of the Ten nessee ltiver wttb as little delay as pos sibla. The enemy is rapidly gathering n strength in bis immediate front; while is rear is Iseriously threatened by a larje force from Memphis. He thus atands in great danger of being cut oil from bis base of supplies at Corinth, bach a thing would be disastrous in the extreme, and we feel persuaded, that ueneral Hood is but acting the part of a wise and disc-ret General in withdrawing his forces to this side of the lennessee. While this circumstance, doubtless, will afford a fruitful theme fur the croakers to harp upon, it should by no means discourage the faithful and those who are in constant bope. With hit army at Corinth ueii. Hood will occupy the line , of defence selected by ten. A. S John son in 1S62, aod the enemy will hed much of his work for the past two or three years to do over a second time. To ths cosrageoos and hopeful, these words are tall of cheerful import, and it is only those who are weary in well du ng that will give way to gloomy fore bodings. The Confederacy is still far more vigorous and powerful tor dwience than is the North for aggression. Hood s in a much better position for defence at t'orintn than he would be at Palmetto or Lovejoy's Ftation in Georgia, while bberman is legs powertul for mischief at Havannah than he would be at AtUnta. The heart of the Confederacy is at least free from the presence of th enemy and the tread of hostile armies, and by proper vigilance on the part of our authorities and the people, it may be kept so. don. UutUr and the Navy. The Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati GatetU says that Gen. But ler has had two or three long and cordial Interviews with the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Navy, oince bis arrivaj in Washington, and there seems to be no unkindmtas between them on account of the warfare between Uutlcr and Porter. Capt Fox, the Assistant Secretary of thef Navy is an old friend an schoolmate of liutler's. They state at the Navy Department that if they, had known that Itutler was to accompany the land forces they would have sent some other officer than Porter to command the fleet. Porter bad a violent quarral with Butler when the latter wa in command at New Orleans, and they would not have risked the chances of failure to co-operate by bringing Porter again in connection with ooe be regarded as an enemy. Bounties. An important bill was reported by the Committee on the Judiciary on Friday, in relation to the payment of bounties by coanties and cities. The main (- lures ot the bill are aa follows: I. No county or city is permitted to pay more than f;i(H) to each viilanteer. 2. A city cannot add its bounty to that paid by the county; but when a city pays a bounty, it is to receive no benefit from the county appropriation and is not to be taxed to pay its bounty debt, which is to be levied on the resi due of the county; bnt when a city pays no separate bounty, it will participate in the couety fund and taxation. 3. to prooure money to pay bounties, counties and cities are authorized to sell their bonds at not less than par, running not more than twenty nor lei than five years, which bonds are to War interest at the rate ot six per cent. 4. An annual tax is required to be levied sufficient to pay the interest and not less than five per cent of the) princi pal ; and if the tax for the extinguishing of the principal cannot, before the expiration of the first live years, be in vested in the bonds at or below tbeir ar value, the bill authorizes it to b oansd on real estate security of not less than twice the value of the loss, or to he temporarily invested iu the public debt ot this State. The great and beneficial feature of the bill is the uniformity ot public bounties for which it provides. The race of prod igality which heretofore has, and now is prevailing among the various counties, will be checked by the passage of this bill, and every county will be able to enlist the men who properly belon-i to it The provisiou for the payment of principal and interest will - make the bonds a safe investment, and the prohibition against selling them below par, w: If cause them to bewpurchased by the citizens cf the coanties issuing tDem, and the tax levied for their redemption will rotarn again to the people of the county, and remain as a part of its taxable wealth. . a ' As the payment of bounties by creating municipal- debts, seems to be the settled policy of the people, we thir.k that this or seas similar bill should be speedily passed. Tobacco Trade. There is a good deal of excitement in the tobacco trade. The proposed export tax on leaf and lugs has caused much activity in New York markets and shipments have been unusaily large. We learn there is considerable competition among the trade in Ilecdecson, and on Saturday sales were made at $37 50 per hundred.
