There has been no time since 162 when enlisting in the army was so lively as at preseat Ib lem than one week Lieut. Ed. P. In addition to these, some 10 or 12 Hubstitutes have been pnt in, making in all about KO men mustered in to the credit of this county. " ' '' Petty Tuitrtso. People should be careful not to leave clothes hanging out at night as we hear of several cases of luthes being stolen from lines. Indeed, we have been made the victim of misluced confidunce, and we will pay undsome reward for the detection of the miserable low lived cose who robbed our clothes-line, an Monday night, of ities' underclothing, napkins, aprons, illow-slips, Ac, Ac., and even bad the meanness to ake our other shirt. Steal ng from the family of an editor is an ndication of more total depravity than we supposed could possibly exist. StiAEP. The Kisfi of yesterday, as we are informed, virtually acknowledges that it lied, in e&ying that a copy of tbe avenport Gatetle was lying before when it clipped Col. Sanders's letter from the Cincinnati Timet, by going off ii a tirade of abuse and blackguardisms against the editors of the Journal. It therefore, pretty evident that was the editor of tbe Timet who was fying and not the Davenport Gate tte. 0, poor devil, repent and reform; we spare you. IOt?We learn from the Jasper Couri er that the people of "glorioui old Du bois" are waking to the necessity of rilling their quota, to avoid the draft, I'hcy are holding meetings, correcting thoir enrollment, and have selected a committee to visit the Provost Marshal, to look after interests. f ' Tns Bounty Fpsd. It is really re fr.-shing to sec the promptitude with w'iich the people are coming forward with their mony and their influence to aid in filling up the quota of Vander burgh County, in order to avoid the im pending draft. By reference to the books at tha Au ditor's office, we find that in Pigeon Township 712 men h.ve paid each $30. In Knight Township 18 men have,, paid each $12. In Perry Township 37 men have paid an average of $50 each. And in Union Township 2 men have paid $45 each. In addition to this, voluntary contributions have been made amount ing to $15. In this connection, too, we are gratified to speak of tbe able speech of Ma jor Kinaey, of Henderson, delivered brfore tbe Kentucky Legislator?, urging the immediate abolition of slavery in that Htate. We have not received a copy of the speech, but from the compliments paid it, and our own knowledge of the Major's ability as an orator, we are satisfied it is an able and statesmanlike production. With such champions as Yeaman and Kinney in Southwestern Kentucky, freedom will soon be the prevailing sentiment in that long benighted region. . NiuhoTauopa While earnest efforts are being made to fill up our quota with white men, we should not loose sight of the 'act that there are large numbers of colored men in the city and county who would make good soldiers, and who are liable to the draft. There is no good reason why these men should te left out, as they have as much interest in the success of the Government as white men. Many of these negroes, we are told, are anxious to enlist, but there seems to be no one authorized or willing to enlist them. Arrangements should be made at once, that these willing fellows should be mustered in, else some of tbe agents of other counties who are prowling around the city will gobble them np, and we will loose the credit of them. We call the attention of tbe Provost Marshal to this matter, and suggest that he appoint a recruiting officer to gather in the Ethiopians. IsSrTbe House Committee bave re ported sundry amendments to the Enrollment Act. These amendments make it the duty of every person to have him self enrolled, and of every boy arriving at the age of 20 to do the same. No one is to be -freed from enrollment on account of physical disability; his name must go on the rolls any way, and the question of disability is one that must afterwards he left to the surgeons. The other most important change made is to hold any drafted person who may put in a substitute responsible for the service of his substitute. If the substitute deserts, then the person originally drafted is called upon to furnish another substi tute, or to enter tha service iimself. Tha bill was sent to the printer. Tbu Louisville Journal of Tuesday gives the following graphic picture of some of the beauties of slavery. It appears that the boy was sent to jsil for no other crime than a desire fur liberty, and that in the refined city of Louisville: About 5 o'clock yesterday evening quite an excitement was occasioned by the conduct of a larjre, stont-bniit black boy, the property of Mr, Dent, He had made his escape some months ago, and since that time has been engaged on the steamer Pioneer. Mr. Dent, having heard of bis whereabouts, proceeded to lbe steamer to get his boy, but he refuxed lo come ashore. With the assistance of the Captain andtk Mateof the steamer, be was brought as far as the stage-plank, when he pulled away from the officers and jumped into tbe river. He tried to secrete himself under the guard of the steamer, but wag not permitted to remain long in that predicament. The crew of the steamer Rocket pulled hira on board. ; His tribulations were not yet over, for his owner again attempted to take him; but he clung to a cable with such tenacity that it required the utmost exertions of four men to compel him to release his hold. He was then brought back as far as the stage plank, when he repeated the dangerous alternative of jumping into the icy river rather than be a captive, aud he was again rescued from his perilous situation by the deck-hands of the steamer. By this time his clothes were nearly all torn from him, .nd it was necessary to procure a wagon to take him to jail, but not without considerable cries and entreaties. The next morning after the elec tion I went into the back bedroom at Dr. Hickson's, to clean the room, and i the corner of the room, under the car pet, I found a lot of Republican tickets, I pushed the door back, and it would not go entirely back, and in looking behind Vvj iua.ir... h am it tr-i SI OA h St TAraa eS thai matla found the tickets. The girl said to the Doctor's wife that she believed tbe Doctor placed the tieke's under the c irpet To which Mrs. Hickson replied that she believed so too, otherwise he (the Doctor) would pot have " colored up .0," when questioned in regard to them. Tbe idea of finding Republican tickets in the bed room of a Democrat, and under the carpet, when no person occupied said room but said Draocrat, and when the ballot-box was near by, and that on tie morning after tbe election, is rather a nove-1 one, and almost indoes us to believe in spiritualism. We do not ey that the Doctor placed them there, but we can't see how these abolition tickets got there without democratic assistance. Again, .there were four more names on the tail paper on the counting out than there were tickets in the box, thus showing that a bad job had been done in " mobbing " tbe id box. Agaio, the majority at the November election was thirty-eight less than at the October election, wbnn the tickets were found under the carpet. These circumstances are " wonderiullv suspicious," and the lw books are full of cases in which crtmnals have been hung on circumstantial evidence, not nearly eo conclusive as that which is adduced in this instance, showing frand in Kily Township. Daniel will have a hard time to show a fair vote in his favor, in tbe precmt bere referred to. A WoCLDBE MCRDERER BCTTHSRED BY a Wokab. The New Albany ledger learns from Mr. John S. Bezgs that a man named Hadlock met his fate in Hawesville, Ky , on Saturday night, under the following circumstances: There is a woman in town who keeps a grog shop, and who had been notified by Hadlock to " move ber shanty " by a certain time. On Saturday Hadlock made bis appearance at the window of her doaticil, which be smashed in, and notified her that if she did not leave by night he would return and murder her. At night he returned and discovered the woman and ber aoa stitting in the bouse. Ue broke the window and pushed his head in, when she struck him on the head with a mallet, and he fell heavily to the earth. She listened a few minutes and bearing him groan, went outside and found him lying in an almost dying condition. She called for ber son to bring her an ax. The son did so, and she took it from him, and deliberately chopped his body op into small pieces and left him for the hogs to devour. She went back into the house and went to bed. At last accounts she had not been arrested, nor was she likely to be, as the citizens justified the act. A Freae of Fobtcse asd a Fortunate Frrak. Mr. S. Drake, one of the stock company now performing at the Opera House in Cincinnati, was made heir by bis grandfather to an almost fabulous number of worthless Virginia acres, which have lain unattended ever since, rather an encumbrance than otherwise to what now proves to be their fortunate owner. Last Saturday he received a letter from a prospecting company who have found oil on kis premises, offering him the snug little sum of $270,000, cash, for his premises. iTGov.
