FEiGHTrrt, Eceawat. Yesterday,
while standing on the corner of Mam nd First streets, looking for an "item," we caw a span ol norses attacnea to a hack daeh aronnd the corner of Water street into Main, and the idea of a briliant runaway flashed into our mind. By the aide of Brown, Dunkerson & Co.' office on Main street stood a heaty wagon oaded with coal, with which the hack - - . t;i: 1 1 A came in eoniaci, nucumg wucca dragging the after part of the heavy wagon around some three feet, breaking th heavy wooden axle of the wagon and bending the iron axle of the back back to an angle of about thirty-five degrees, causing the wheel to slip over that of the wagon. The hcrses then took their way at a famous speed op Main street, which was full of wagons, drays and express wagons. Men ran forth to stop the frightened team aod succeeded in directing them fairly into the hinder part of another heavy wagoB, to which four mules were attached, and in which were two boysjof twelve and sixteen years. The concussion tumbled one of the boy a nearly out of the wagon aod prostrated the other, but fortunately tie mule team, which had started to run was stopped by citizens before they had fairly get under way. The horses at tached to the back thea turned their course toward the pavement, which was crowded with people, and for a mouien it seemed impossible that all should ta cape with life and sound limbs. Com ing in contact with a telegraph pole however, ttie speed ot tne wild team was checked, and a timely seizure of the reins brought them to a halt, and the driver arriving, the) were taken charge of and released from their taugied op condition. The back, with the exception of the kXl before alluded to, one wbi tile-tree, and a fev? other slight fractures, was aot much injured. , The team, as usual if) such cases, had been left standing untied and unattended " only for a luoment," and took ad vantage of the circumstances. It seems Imost miraculous that in such a crowd ed place so little iojury was done. We are informed that the same team, with the same hack, raa fei uigbts ago, ana tne nacK, wincu was then badly broken, bad tost been Mended. ' If we owned the horses, we wonld eel' them to the Government for cavalry, as they seem good on a charge. Kkiiel UrsBATiowa at Owsssboro. Mr. W. S. General aMTThe Toronto Glvbt had an able and lucid explanation of the principles of the right of asylum, and we think it pcaaaaa tKa true SttntirnentS Of the Canadian people. Its final paragraph is the key-note to the eutire article: We tell tbe apologists for the felonious doings of the Southern chivalry that they misunderstand the Canadian people. They are not the unprincipled, shortsighted fools they suppose tbem to be. Tliey cherish the light of asylum as they do their fealty to the Crown, but they know it to be inconsistent and subversive of that rigSt that this land shonld be made the rendezvous where banditti may congregate unmolested, confes-redly to perpetrate dreda which "shall make civilization shudder." They will nut permit it, though they take arms in their hands and exp-l the marauders from their soil. Confident that we apeak the sentiments of tpe people, certain that every true Canadian heart will respond to tbe sentimeuta we have uttered, we call upon the Government, aa they value the peace, prosperity, honor and hapniness of the land, that, at tb approach ing meeting ot tbe Legislature, they will bring forwkrd such measurea aa are necessary for tfie preservation of amity with our neighbora and the vindication of our truth before tbe world. A Bfi Little Fiuht. Oa Saturday, Dec. "t tb, the notorious guerrilla leader Capt Pratt, with six of his desperadoes. all armed to tbe teetb, surrounded the bouse of CaptlSaiu. labour, on the western edge ol Oardin county, Ky", and demanded his immediate surrender! Tabour and his nephew, a boy aboit fif teen years old, aod a son ot John Tabour, who was ia tbe house at the time, had belonged to a home-guard company, and they knew that in case of surrender they could expect no mercy from the bands of the outlawa. They refused to give themselves up, and a fight at once usued. Young Tabour fired the first shot, shooting one of the outlaws through the heart The Captain waa not long in following suit With bis unerring rifle he Laronght down another one of the scoundrels, when tbe remaining five guerrillas started to flee. Pratt turned to fire a parting shot, when the Captain rewarded him with a ball in the mouth, which settled, in short order, his temporal affairs. Pratt had scarcely fallen before Tabour took aim with a navy reJ volver, and brought the fourth scoundrel to the ground. The remaining three halted about two hundred yards from tbe house, and one of them was in the act of firing, when tbe boy took quick aim and shot the gun, a Spencerrifle, from the hands of the outlaw. This closed the fight Tbe guerillas did not care about continuing the struggle. They came to the conclusion that the place was extremely unhealthy, so they beat a hasty retreat. Captain Tabour arrivexl in Louisville en F'riday last, and, presenting himself before Colonel Fairleigh. made the following report: "Colonel, we tave some captured property to acconnt for. We have three dead men, and one wounded, a prisoner. We have three live horses and a dead one, three Enfield rifles, one carbine, and four saddles. What must we do with them?"
