main army, although matters, perhaps,

have already culminated, either in a

general engagement or in the retreat of

Hood, which latter movement would prove as disastrous to him as a general engagement ' . A Word into the Eabs op oca Merchants. We have already mentioned the fact that parties ia Louisville have under consideration the enterprise of establishing a daily line of steamers between Louisville and Cairo, and we have published a communication on the subject over tbe signature of " Packetman," in which was very succinctly set forth

the interest which Kvanaville had in the enterprise. , j " Packetman " was correct in the statement tbat tba snecess 'of each an enterprise would be the ruin of the packet trade as well as or the business of this city, and Evansville would become b city of secondary importance. A line of packets running through from Louisville to Cairo and bank, and whose owners lived in Louisville, would,

ia the first place, be interested in build

ng tip the trade of their own city, and

consequently would carry to Louisville

11 the trade of Southwestern Kentucky nd Southern Illinois that they con Id in

fluence, which would soon result in de

etroyng tbe wholesale trade of Evans-

ills, which is bow larger than . that of

ny city in the State. In the second

place, such a line of boats loading with tobacco, cotton, or 'other products of points south of os, would prefer to carry such freight through to Louisville rather thao.ilelty. to. unload at this port, and we would thus lose the immense shipments through this , city, which now give emplpyment to so many of oar citi

ajid which forms the chief re

source of the Evansville and Crawfords-

ville Railroad.

In the third place, it will break up the

excellent line of packets which bow ply between this city and Cairo, aad which

is so deservedly the pride o dor city."

While we entertain tbe highest regard

for the enterprising gentlemen of Louis

ville who contemplate the establishment of the new line, and desire to them
