Union tick.t A more quiet, pleasant and good iiutttri'd man was cot to be (.mid in the county. He was one of tha oldest rcKidentH, loo, find we never heard ought against him in any particular. Hi murder was brutal. It was perpetrated, wo learn, by parties who have dotio their Lest to murder one or two other individual in thai township, who differed from them politically. These bullies will yet be made to pay the penalty of their infamous crimes. The Union men of Vanderburgh county do not intend that four or five lawless rutlias in any one towaship shall abuse, ninitrent and murder Union citisens with impunity. The parties whe made tbe assault on Mr. Clurk, we understand, are known, and every effort will be made to briug them to justice. Some of them are said lo be old offenders, and have for years systematically and persistently browbeaten, abused and punished men who diflV-red with them in politics. They have established akiudof Reign of Ter. ror in Gtrman Township for the pur pose of intimidating the quiet and weak. Wo think that game i about played out In the case of Mr. Clark, as it has been in thousands ol instances before, tha blood of the martyr will prove the seed of the church. Ue fell just as much a victim to this heliish rebellion as though be h.-id fallen in the front of battle. Tbe scoundrels who murdered him are infinitely meaner rebels than thousands who train under the battle-Hags of the Southern Confederacy.

Defeated. W regret to learn that Gen. Gillam has met with a mishap in EAt Tennessee. Hitherto he has been so eminently successful that we fear he was not as prudent as he should have been. lie allowed Breckinridge with a superior force to flank his position at Bull's Gap and then attack him while retreating. Taken at such a disadvaatuge, it is not surprising tbat he was defeated, with considerable loss of men and.munitions of war. What force is at Knoxvill we do not know, bat presume it is sufficiently large to check Gen. Breckinridge should he attempt any arN ranee up. mi that place or into Kentucky. At any rate, the number of men now going to the front will insure the safety of all vital points. ; P. S S.nce writing tha above, ' we learn by a telegram from Chattanooga that Gen. The villains took refutre in a log house occupied by the family of a Union man, anj kept the woman of the houie and cliil. drcn as hostages. The Union troops did not dare to fire into the hon.e fur fear of hariniu the woman and children. The bushwhackers were blowing their horns for reinforcements, and the Union troops had also sent to Col. aW A new and beautiful method of lighting gaa without tha osa a of match has been introduced in Philadelphia. It is a neat and elegant fixture, consisting of a brass cup, lioed with silk, a loosefitting India-rubber stopper, and an insulated copper wire coil, with a platinnm point directly over the burner. Within the stopper is placed a small piece of tin-foil, to hold or atora for use the electricity generated by the friction of the India-rubber stopper upon tbe silk lining of the cup. While the cup is closed there is a complete electic current maintained, bat when tbe gas is ta be lighted tie cap is lifted, the electricity current is broken and tie electricity passes down the coil of wire to the burner. At the same moment the gss is turned cn, and
instantly lighted. ' ' A Handsome Sen.
