Latist from the Froht. No fighting of consequence had taken place. ftaJTGen. Canby officially announces the recapture oi thirteen battle flags taken from Gen. Banks during his Red river campaign. A large rebel mail taken at the same time, shows the great despondency of the rebels of Western Mississippi. Capt. Klisce. We hear that this gallant and patriotic officer has been assigned to duly at Louisville), as Master of Transportation on the various railroads leading from that city. We know no man better qualified for the responsible daty. lie i a live man, and his heart is always in the right place. Guerrillas at Oweksboro. We are informed by a gentleman from Owensboro, that thertj wereSOgaerrillas in that towa yesterday morning, and that the country back of that place swarms with the scoundrels. Acousiderable force are reported to be at Yelvington, and another consider, able body was met near Calhoun going in that direction. Senatorial Contest. We learn, says the Terre Haute Dtmocrat, that the necessary papers have been filed in the Clerk's olice, notifying Bayless W. HanDa that his seat in the State Senate will be contested, on the ground that he is not a citizen of the Senatorial district It is notorious that he has bad no settled home or abiding place for a long timeoscillating between Crawfordsvil'e, EvansYille, Illinois, and elsewhere. Major Botiiisoa t the Wigwam Acother Large Meeting a Plain and PoTerfal Speecli. Sobs 2,000 people Assembled at the '.Vigwam oo Satardaj night, to htur Major Robinson. This is the Crst time the Major iiM appeared in public speech this season, and there was aa eager anxietj to hear him. Thsre was splendid music, as usual, bj the Crescerit City Silver Band, and Major Kobinsou's speech did not disappoint expectation.
The Major has a great prcner.si, to call things by their right names, and he beliefs that what is treason in Georgia nd Tennessee is treason in Iadiana, that men in Indiana who act and taif. ke men act aad talk in Georgia or South Carolina, as far as ther can without taking np arms against the Got erament are traitors; and he believes that a ticket nominated by traitors, and a platform derisedby traitors, is a traitor platform and a traitor ticket, and be so expressed it His speech was of each a character as ! cannot be controverted, for he spoke by the record, and spoke of that with which all are familiar. lie gave some excellent advice to Union men, which they should carefully consider and practice. We wish every man in the State could bear Maj. Robinson's plain, practicable, uncontrovertible truths, and his plain and forcible uanner of putting them. His speech was highly appreciated and loudly applauded. Col A. J. Fletcher, being called on, taade a speech in his usual forci ble and fearless style, which was well re ceived by the audience. Having seen traitors act and heard them talk in East Tennessee, be is well prepared to judge of and distingaish the same class in onr midst, differing only io their greater meanness in that tbey seek safety and protection under the old flag, only to abme, denounce and calumniate those who are laboring to maintain its honor and to extend its sway We were glad to see several present who feel that they nave been in lal company and have begun to feel a desire to leave a corrupt and demoralized party nd array themselves on the side of their country. GfTTiko Use ast. We notice some of the McClellaa papers are already mani festing a little shakioees at the fact of Harrison, Grand Secretary of the Sons of. Liberty, being put on the witness staad to testify against bis traitoroas as sociates. His testimony opens ap rich and it is said it will grow richer, even to oiliness before it closes. Wake np, Copperheads! Carrmgton and Hovey are after you. Movbmests of Gobrbillas. From gentlemen frem th Greea river country we learn that the guerrillas in consider able numbers have btvn crossing Green river, going West and South for several days. On Saturday morning about two bun dred crosaej tt Curdsvi'iln, but our in furmant did not learn who was in com maul. By passengers on theTarascon we learn tha! the gray-backs have disappeared from the line of the river above, and are supposed to have gone South. All through Kentucky they have stolen horses wherever they could find them of a suitable character. On Saturday a party of them were in Henderson, and the gunboat Moose coming up they left ia haste, their retreat being accelerated by a few shells from the guns of the Moose.' It is still unsettled what brought sc large a number into that country. Arraagements, we are happy -to learn, are now on foot to look after the thieving scoundrels, and we bops to hear soeo that they hare met with rough usage. The only avowed object of their coming Into Kentucky was to regulate the election, and to see that the McClellaa men had the privilege of voting. fT" We had the pleasure of meeting Capt Charley Churchill, late of the 3Sth Illinois, in the city. His time of service has expired, but Charley says he will have to return to the service and see the thing through. He thinks the Home Guard can take care of the enemy in the rear, since the late elections. t&m About ha.if a dozen guerrillas under a rascal named Stauifer, went to Covington last Thursday night to capture Gov. Chase, and remained there several hours. In all that time, there was not the slightest interference with them. Covington is a very ill-smelling abalition hole. Louisville Journal Half a dozen or even a less number of guerrillas go into Henderson almost daily, and there is aot the slightest interference with them. Ia Henderson "a very ill-smelling Abolition hole?" Badly Hirt. From the manner which the several editors, ostensible and svb rota, howl, it is evident that they feel very badly damaged by the plain home thrusts given them by Rev. Alex. Sterrett, on Thursday night last His limning of certain characters was so true to the life and displayed such artistic ability that we may expect a diatribe of invectives from the subjects of his pictures, until after the Presidential election at least, when its railing and its life will probably cease together. " For they shall gnaw a file and shall flee into the mountains of Hepsidam. where the iion roareth and the whaBgl doodle mourneth her Erst bora." tT We know of two brave soMier boys who voted on Tuesday last, one of them nine times, aud the other twentyone times. Both of them are since sorrv ibat they vote i for Morton, but they did it, and it is so recorded. State Sentinel Of course the above is an unmitigated lie, but it serves to illustrate the Demo" cratic love and respect entertained tor the soldiers by the McClellanitea. Soldiers will remember these base calumnies at the November election. .Governor Morton was announced to speak at the Cooper Institute oa Saturday night Th " ConiiMnlAl ' Rank " rill cot open nntil November 1st
A-VD2EW ZCSII5E. The subject of this sketch was born in
Antrim, in the north of Ireland, Jan. 1739, and came to America in 1819. Having a pooi education, he engaged for sometime in tf aching, but finally set. tied cn a farm near Lrir.sville, and made it his home. Here he lived till he was the sole survivor of his family; till he saw the grave cicse over Lis wife, three sons and two daughters. Two of his sons came to viperous manhood, one fell ia youth, and tlie two daughters passed away in m'aney. ;iarring a second time, he leaves now a widow to moarn his sudden departure. A few weeks ago he went with 3Ir,s. Erskine to visit some friends in Illinois. On their return they came t Odio (the crossing of the Illinois Central A Ohio A Mississippi Railroads) to take the train on the O. & M. Railroad east to Vincennea. While waiting- at the depot for the cars, the gentleman with whom he was earnestly conversing, suddenly started np, saying, " Here is oar train.' They went oa beard hurriedly, and had gone severalaasiles before tbey discov ered that they were on the Illinois Cen tral Road, bound for Chicago. At the first station they 'stopped, to wait far the evening train returning. He was greatly troubled on aceeuat of the mistake he had made, and to Mrs Erskine be remarked, several times, "There is fatality in this." This was on Friday morning, October 7th. During the day be was more than usually re served and thoughtful, and spent a con siderable time in reading the New Testa ment Scriptures It was known to a ftw of his friends that for some time past he had derived great consolation from our holy religion, and that he had a fun 'rust ia the world's Redeemer. On the evening train thef returned and reached Odin at 9 p.m. Io going to a place of entertainment, where they would wait for the morning train to Yin cennes, tbey had to cross the track of the O. and M. Railroad A train (bound w est) standing on ice tracK at a snort distance, and having no locomotive head-tight, started suddenly in the dark ness and without a signal, and struek Mr. Erskine just as he was leaving the track. His left foot was crushed, he was thrown down, and received severe injuries ia bis side and bead. As be began to recover from the shock, and was being raised upon the platform, he saw Mrs. Erskine near, and remarked: " Did I not tell you there was some fatality in this?" .From the injuries thus received he suffered nntil Sunday, 3 o'clock a. us., when he calmly folded bis bands upon his breast and peacefully sank to rest, closing bis eyes in the long, last sleep. For several years Mr. Erskiue bad spent much time in traveling, especially tbroogh England and Ireland, croniog the ocean five times. He a bo visited many portions of our own couatry. Io some places be protracted his stay until it amounted iilmeil to a temporary resid"nca. This was tbe ce in London and on the Ie! of Jersey. In these travels lie uisue tbe acquaintance! of many eminent statesmen, with whom he kept up a correspondence to the time of his death. In early Iifo he was a communicant in tbe church, and though after coming to this country ha never attached himself to any branch of the church, yet he was a firm believer in the truths and principles of religiwn. In his dealings with men he was strictly upright and concieutions, and no one ever found occasion to call in (uestion bis integrity. In acts of benevolence he was known, bun not so well by thn world as by those who received his charities, aad many there are who have been blessed by his kiadnes aad liberality, who will now mourn the loss of a benefactor. Long will his memory be cherished by a large circle of friends, both at home and abroad. And he will be remember ed as the worthy citiien, the intelligent traveler, tbe high toned Christian gen tleman, the pure patriot, and the friend of the poor. PeT "Aleck is six feet high" neiiher mentally or physically, and if his uncalled-for allusions to gentlemen (?) last evening should result in his scuddiDtr down Main street io all tbe agoniee of inaeceni terror, be must console himself with the reflection that in his efforts to degrade the pulpir, he has succeeded only in degrading himself. r.wtes. Tbe furtive threat of violence contained in the above toward Rev. Mr. Sterrett, is rich in the extreme. This whole community would be glad to know the source whence that "scudding down Main street In all the agony of indecent terror" shall arise; whether the terror shall arise from the editor of tbe Timet, ostensible, or to the "gentlemen" to whom those "allusions" were made; aad moreover, when that "terror" is brought to bear cn "Aleck Sterrett," the people, generally, want to be there to see. We have heard cf a man senddiag through saloons in terror, but we are inclined to believe that Mr. Sterrett will neither terrify or scad very muchly. Terrible Accident. The Terre Haute Exprett of Friday says: " Yesterday evening, while Holmes's Battery were firing a satate in honor of Sheridan's last victory, tbe pan was prematurely discharged, and Joseph Rcner and Daly were seriously in jured, the former no doubt fatally. Tbey were engaged in ramming the cartridge down, when the man who had his thnmH on the touch-hole from some cause ! . go, and the gun was discharged. Joseph Renter had both arms torn off, one above the elbow and tbe other beiow. He was also severely bruised about the i breast and face. No hopes were entertained last evenin? of his recovers Daly had a portion oi one hand torn off. " Et-nner served a term of service' in the Z2i Indiana, and was a hard-working, iodnstrious mechanic." tSy " But, as is now freely confessed, Mr. Voorhees was much stronger than bad been anticipated. Terre Haute Journal Who confesses it? We have not heard any Union man make saeh a confession. Aad more, his majority was over twentyfour hundred two years ago, and is about six hundred now! Take oat the fraudulent votes cast for him and stc&d for him, and he is defeated by a handsome majority. "Anticipated," indeed! Terr II aut t Dem.
