Oar readers remember a precious piece of mortality that osfd to live here, and more recently at Terre Haute, Darned Bavless W Ilanna. He is a model professor of the new-fangled doctrine of peace a Copperhead of the true stripe ; and in his conduct political and moral illustrates the virtues of the per.ausion to perfection. He it wes, who introduced the celebrated Military Bill in the last Legislature, in which it was provided that all military power should be taken from the hands cf tbe Governor, where the Constitution re' poses it, and lodged in the hands oi the I Kecretarv. leaders, but his real object anybody can readily tiuajrine. riidnitbtedlr it is to act os an embassador between Yallaodig' ham, VoorheeJ, St Co., and Jeff. Davis. He is a sort of Minister Plenipotentiary to the Rebel court. Vallaodigham "watches and waits over the Border," and fit out piratical expeditions against the United Htates. Voorhees makes speeches in Congress j calculated to weaken the Government nd encourage the Kebellion, and puts In his odd moments in inciting resistance a in to the laws and the murder of Union soldiers. Itayteis Hanna the lackey of the two chiefs goes to the Southern Confederacy in order to keep up a close communion between the Hebels North and South. , We hope he may stay there, for be can do the country less harm there than in th North, whore his potition as a legislator gives him position and influence which he conlj not otherwise enjoy. ' Apologl-Infr for Forrest. An article in .Saturd.y'g Timet tinder the head of "Incidents of the Paducah Fight, " is a studied and not very covert attempt to caxt censuro npon CoL Hicks and to mitigate the brutal conduct of Forrest. "Col. Hicks," guys Jie Timet, " ordored all the houses to be burned within musket range of the fort, " because " excited apprehensions were entertained that the attack would be renewed. " The 2Viej should have stated that these "excited apprehensions " were founded upon a message from Forrest, that.tnorning sent in,)lhat he could and woutd storm tho fort and givo no quarter, anu that not a singla house was burned that did not cover sharpshooters or conceal tbe charging column the day before. But it suited tbe Timet to suppress these facts. But the Times snia, "time was not given (by CoL Hicks) to the owners and occupants to remove their furniture." Tbe Tim should have said tbat tbe '' owners and occupants " had been driven away the day previous by Forrest's assassins charging upon and taking possession of these houses for his sharp-ahooters and to conceal his charging column, and this too without auy notice the " owners and occupants " having to run the gauntlet between the combatants to get away, in which little babes and citizens were shot. The houses had been sacked by th rebels before being burned. It did not suit the Tima to erprtu these truths. This might reflect on Forrest. " Tbe people lost their reason, " ' a general rash of men, women and children to the wharf-boat and back of the river," "tbe mud was deep, "" hundreds of women and children were struggling through tha mud, " seven premature births took place on the cold groond and in the rain. " And why was all this? The Times says it was to escape from the " shot and shell "of the fort and gunboats, of coarse; and Cel. Hicks was to blame. Wh v not have said, Jfr. Timet i that these people were driven from their houses by the rebels charging on, and into their houses, without a moment's warning, and commencing fire upon the Kunboats and the fort Or would tins have disparaged Forrest? Why not tell your readers that Forrest studiously kept the women and children between his main column aud the gnnboats and kept his sharp-shooters mixed in with th? people? "Ten brick business houses, the Water Street block, were shelled and burned to the ground by the gunboats." a part of. one 0r the blocks, not exceeding ten rooms, was burned, and this not un. til the 'rebels lad opened a fatal fire from its windows upon the guuboat " 36. AX INFAMOUS SLANDER AN EDITOlTTn TROUBLE TUE FVSTKST TIMK OS RKCOKD. , AN KXTHAOKDINAKY LEAP. IS' o w at n cl rV li o 11 . A number of responsible gentlemen of this city waited upon us last night and related the following extraordinary story. The gentlemen who were the witnesses aver tbat the story is strictly true, and that a number of other gentlemen are ready to make affidavit to its accuracyThey say that, Mr. Sproule, ostensible editor of the Times, was in company with a fuw soldiers and others at Vabns.cdler'g saloon lust uibt, jut after dark, drinkCapt Miller proposed the toast, "Tbe Union," to which Sproule replied, "that's the vray I am," ?r words to that effect, Milh-r replied, "You would rather vote Wr Jeff. Davis than for Abe Lincoln." Sproule turned and started lor the door, and as he went out he said thut " every d d soldier was a (.J d d d Son-of-st-B-h." Miller at once started in pursuit, when Sproulo took his way into Schafer'a saloon, out at the back door, and over tha fence, iuto tho adley aud disappeared in the dark, having distanced the soldier. It st ill be remembered that a week or two ago this remarkable individual declared that he aud his party were par excellence the friends of the soldier, and groaned in spirit over tbe neglect manifested towards them bv the Abolitionista ! Tbat was befora the election, bat no sooner are the votes cast than be, in the midst of his cops, gives expression to his true sentiments in the chaste and classic language quoted above. Now the soldiers are justly indignant and would no doubt have bandlrd the gentleman (') roughly had they overtaken him last night But we hope they will now leave th matter to tbe goadings of a guilty cocscienee and the execrations of an outraged commnoity, aad prepare to steadily and always vote against the party of which he is the hired mouth-piece. The persons present who heard this infamous expression, were Capt. M. Miller, Sth led. Battery, James Higer, Co. R 2.1th. Ind; R. B. Kirkpatrick, a div charged soldkr; Philip Kurg; Jacob f Rieflen; John Moll, and others whosa j names were not taken down, j We received this information from a f number of respectable gentlemen, aa we j before stated, among whom were several who were present and heard the remark. ! Mkvhakic. The makes a great ' show of regard for mechanics. Now we would like to know what sympathy the j editorial corps of that delectable sheet j can have with mechanics.
