FBI I' A V ...MARCH 11 I y '.'--vK Vy?.'t;'''ii'T" ; TV". . . Cm M. TflAVER, K. SILVERTHORJi,.. Editor. ..Associate. What Copperheads are for. Judge Origen S. Seymour, in accepting; the nomination for Governor by the CopperLeads of Connecticut, announced his political creed in the following words: " I am for the restoration of the Union as it was, under the Constitution as it is; and I believe that such restoration is the earnest desire of the peace-loving and law-abiding citizens of the Republic. To the Union thus restored, allegiance iu line from all. and may be exacted of all Wa mav rightfully and by force of arms compel obedience to tne constitu y . " . . - . , ' r. tion as it is, but not to a reconstructed and altered Government, without violating the first principle of civil liberty, that 'Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.' " Tn other words, the Judse is for the war until Jeff. Davis, Toombs, Stephens .fe Co are restored to their seats in the United States Senate and the other positions of honor and profit under the Gov eminent which they held at the begin ning of the struggle. We cannot wage .t... m ...t,U nnn nlmn infontmn (t U'ithmil. vmlntiii the first urinciole of civil n liberty, that 'Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.' " . . Out upon the traitor! . Secretary Chase's Intentions. If any man in Washington has the opportunity of knowing Mr. Chase's views and intentions it is Mr. Reid, the "Agate "-of. the Cincinnati Gazette. In his dispatch to that paper on Tuesday evenhe says: It is entirely safe, I think, to assume that iu view of the recetit action of the Union members of the Ohio Legislature, Mr. Chase's friends will not make any diversions that will tend to nifir the harmony of the party in the approaching Presidential flection. Mr. Chase himself, will, it is believed, insist on ry-epptin the action of the Union members of the legislature an final in the ense. This i.s gratifying. With M. Lincoln as the candidate of the Union party i. nt in nomination without dissension and by will be, acclamation, ns we believe lie when the delegates to the mon Convention assemble in L'ahimore compare views he will sweep th,e States with yu enthusiasm unparn :ind i loyal le'led in e'eetions, and the hopes entertained by the rebels of a change of Administration and policy will be crushed to the ground. They will conclude that it will be useless to longer contend against fate and lay down their arms. JBaJ The bill enabling the soldiers of Pennsylvania, who may be in service next Fall, to vote where they are, passed the Legislature of Pennsylvania by .a vote of seventeen yeas to sixteen nays every Copperhead voting against it. In New Jersey, it will be recollected, the Legislature, which is largely and bitterly Copperhead, passed an act preventing soldiers from coming within a mile of any precinct at which an election is being held. A more infamous insult to brave men was never conceived. And yet, in the face of such facts, the snaky hypocrites in this part of the tate talk of being the soldiers' friends. They know they are lying when they say so. They would, if it were in their power, disfranchise every man who shoulders a musket to suppress rebellion and punish treason. Fac Simile of the Emancipation Proclamation.Mr. Lyons, the agent for the distribution of this document, "received his first installment yesterday and was engaged in their -distribution. He will receive another lot soon and will be able to supply all demands. We are assured that this fac simile of the most important document ever published is perfect and worthy of preservation. Mr. Lyon is a disabled soldier, and in.buying from him our citizens aid a meritorious soldier. jeST" A call, extensively signed, has been circulated in Missouri for a Union State Convention, for the purpose of nominating a Union electoral ticket and appointing delegates to the Union National Convention. The Convention is called to meet in St. Louis on the 27th day of April next Family Jars. They talk a good deal in England about "that unnatural strife" meaning the American war: but re lationship does not appear to breed kind- ' ness, even in luirope. The present wir in Denmark is a qurrel among blood relations, who ought to be ashamed of themselves for falling by the ears before the whole world. A London paper savs of recent occurrences in tlie Duchies : "Her Mnjesfy's brother-in-law and her daughter's father-in-law have occupied with their- forces two provinces claimed by the father-in-law of the Prince of Wales." That is really a horrid and unbearable state cf affairs an unnatural strife which England ought by all means to stop N. Y. Post. The Better Dat the Better Dtun. The rebel Congress has appointed the first of xVpril as the day on which onethird of the value of Mr. Memminger's currency will be "repudiated." The sufferers by that act of confiscation probably think this day to have been chosen iu compliment to themselves, the victims perhaps of the hup-est. practical joke ever played oft' on All Fool's Day JV. Y. Post. A Poetical Editor The editor of the Fall River JVejcs has taken to writing poetry, as the following will show. It contains as much truth as poetry: Breathes there a man with soul so dead who never to himself hath said I will my County paper take both for my own and family s sake? If such there be let him repent and have the paper to him sent and if be 'd pass a happy winter he, in advance will pay the printer.

K-rom Cincinnati. Cincinnati, March 10. Till Commerrial s Columbus dispatch says Secretary Chase has written a letter to lion. James C. Hall, State Senator, withdrawing his name from the Presidential canvass. The Gazettes Cairo dispatch says the passengers by the steamer Sultana re port that Sherman s expedition penetrated thirty-five miles beyond Meridian, lestrovinj all the railroad.- Sherman's ( los-i in killed, wounded and missing, is about 500. All quiet at Chattanooga and Kfiox--nlle. Western Items. St. Loos, March 1ft Waldron, 160 miles south, of Fort Smith, Ark, and recently our advance post, was burned by gerrillas a tew nignta ago. 1 wo steamers and a large supply train, from Little Rock, had arrived at fort Smith, ihe steamer Leon, laden with commissary, stores, sunk in the Arkansas River above Little Kock on the 6th inst. Gen. Price had returned from Mattamoris, Mexico, where his recent furlough' allowed him to go to visit his family, lie now commands the rebel's department of Arkansas. Deserters continue to arrive in considerable numbers. The report from Springfield, Illinois, yesterday, that the copperheads in Hardin and Calhoun counties, Illinois, had killed six soldiers, is untrue. The extent of the affair was that a drunken citizeD hurrahed for Jeff Davis, and was roundly thrashed by a furloughed veteran. Washington Gossip. , New York, March 10. A Washington correspondent says it is understood that Gen. Grant protests against further attempt? to penetrate the Confederacy until Richmond shall have been taken. He disagrees with Gen. Halleck, and places the highest value npon the rebel Capital,' declaring that Cincinra'i ns well as Washington are threatened by it. Another correspondent says of this new "on to Richmond" movement: I think it probable that Grant will command the main column,' with" 'Sherman, McPherson, Meade and Hooker as chief subordinates. Gen. William HmitU arrived here today, which gave rise to the report that he was to supercede Meade. It is plain that Grant urges his appointment. Special to the Tribim Washington-, Mhi-oIi 0. Gen. Grant 'had a conference to-day three hours long with the Secretary of War and Gen. Halleck, upon the military situation in all the lighting departments. In this important council a general campaign was agreed upon that is intended to lv; decisive. The particular point, is of maLiug a more enetgelic and decisive me of the army of the Potomac, than has heretofore been !;i;ulr, was fully recognized. If irt understood that this extends fo more ih'ui reorganizing and changing its commander, whiidi is thought, br-st. Grant will go !o the army of" the Po'oiuae tomorrow to see its condition and snuwhat it wants, lie long jouriiev work. Gen. ll illrt has hardly slept from hi i i..'i-i', an 1 vet is hard a t wiil 'perform lh fune1 turns ol chief of statf to the President, stated, on high authority, that It, is Grant will soon returi to the South to finish his hlg job. Minister Dayton's son is ssid to linve arrived here from Paris, to-day, with dispatches from his father expressing the opinion that, the accordance to the French Government of free egress to rebel cruisers, from ports in which they have been allowed to receive repairs, foreshadows the recognitor of the Confederacy. General Halleck stated to-day, to the President, that the reports of Gen. Sherman having met with rever.es, are wholly untrue. He had accomplished all he was sent to do. The Worlds special says a council was held to-day at which not only the President, Grant, Halleck and the whole Cabinet participated but all the military talent which the Administration has confidence in was present.- The basis of the case submitted for consideration was that the several February expeditions had totally miscarried and the country was becoming alarmed and dissatisfied. I have i( from a source considered reliable that after :he grounds had been gone over Grant was asked for his views, and he promptly replied in favor of the capture of Richmond as the first step in the campaign, and I feel quite sure that orders will instantly go forward to'bring the 11th and 12th corps from Chattanooga, and the 10th and 17th corps from the Mississippi River to Virginia. All the troops that can be spared from other points will, according to statements which reached me, be incorporated in. the Army of the Potomac, and Banks will be reinforce d by negro troops, but aierely this and nothing more. It is expected that with the aid of the fleet we will be able to take Mobile.- The bulk of white troops will be concentrated in Virginia. It is believed that 200,000 men can be brought against Richmond at pny day. The Richmond Enquirer of the 7;,h says General Bragg has determined to order 1,500 cavalry to be permanently stationed around Richmond. With such a force picketing the roads it will effectually protect the city from the insults of raids as well as the country from their injuries. The Richmond Examiner saya Col. Dahlgren was killed at Watchtown. There were two bullets through his head, one through his hand, and two iu the body. He was stripped naked, and his body left lying in the road. A number of our men were captured; and the Whig shy's they should not . be treated as prisoners of war, but that this day's sun should not go down before every scoundrel taken is blown from the cannon's mouth. , , . Prisoners Taken 1- the Keltela. AVashington, March 0. The Chronicle has received files of late Richmond papers, including dates to the 8th inst Lient. Pollard- bronght in ninety-five Yankee prisoners on Saturday night, captured in nn encounter in King William County., According to one account, these iiinkeatbree hundred and f four prisoners captured from the raid ers, besides the killed and also the wounded who: were not csptured. ; Pittjbukg, March 10. The feet bv pier mark and falling since S o'clock A. M. -, - iver mne Raining A French Opinion or Gen. Grant. j The Paris Pressej in an article upon the j American war, in-which it arrived at j the conclusion that the South is about I to abandon the struggle, thus speaks of i Gen. Grant: , j " Grant is the American Massena, the ', beloved child of Victory; who has never j met with a reverse, but who is as valiant 1 and indefatigable as if he had one to ! fear. Alone he is aUe to resist the ! three armies of the Confederacy." This compliment to ',the-lieutenant-General is well deserved.; Europe is generally coming round to a true appreciation of the situation in this country, and in a few years will do . us full and ample justice. Already some of their papers are pronouncing our army the best in the world, and this fact will soon be universally acknowledged.
